I was hoping someone could help me shed some light on who Ultra Magnus is, by that I mean his persona. I just can't seem to get a grasp on his character. Even after reading his Spotlight, I'm still not sure what makes him tick and what his motives are.

Basically he is the anti-Starscream.
Ever happy to follow someone else's orders, and he will follow them to the letter.
Add that to the fact he is a super soldier, and you have one pretty impressive warrior.

Anyway, the OP never really specified WHICH Ultra Magnus so...
G1: Optimus Prime's "old friend", Ultra Magnus as far as I can tell SHOULD be more powerfull than Optimus because he has that cool battle armor.
Ultra Magnus WAS chosen by Optimus to lead the Autobots after his death but the Matrix ended up in the hands of Hot Rod insted. Still Ultra Magnus does not hold a grudge and rather than being all like "Give me that Matrix, Optimus gave it to me not you!" He trys to help Rodimus as sort of an advisor/second in command.
The Decepticons, especially Galvatron, still see Ultra Magnus as the leader or the bigger threat I guess. Even though they know Rodimus has the Matrix they allso know Magnus was the leader chosen by Optimus.
RID: This Ultra Magnus is like the complete polor oppisite of G1 Magnus. He's Optimus Prime's brother, he thinks he's the most powerfull and most qualified Autobot to be leader and hates Optimus. He came to Earth with the soul purpus of takeing the Matrix from Optimus Prime and takeing over as leader of the Autobots. Alpha Trion was mentioned as their father but he was never seen in the series.
Omega Prime is basically an accident. Neither Optimus or Magnus know exactly how Omega Prime was formed. Ultra Magnus thinks Optimus did it on purpus. Optimus thinks whatever Magnus did to try and drain the Matrix energy from him caused it.
The Matrix in RID, I guess I should have said this earlier, is not an object like in G1, the Unicron Trilligy, or the movie. The Matrix is just an energy that surgest through the body of the leader and can be drained or passed on by a hand shake apperently.
Anyway when Ultra Magnus tried to drain Optimus of the Matrix they ended up combineing to form Omega Prime. Omega Prime I belive had his own voice actor too. He didn't share a voice with either Optimus or Magnus and I really didn't like his voice. I'd actully prefer if Omega Prime had Optimus', Magnus', or both their voices.
Anyway, short version... G1: good guy, everyone loved, was loyal to his leader, and didn't hold a grudge. RID: bad guy*, everyone hated, who hated his leader, and could hold a grudge for a millenium.
*RID Ultra Magnus was not evil, he just didn't work well with others. Didn't want you to get the wrong idea by my "bad guy" comment

Think of him as a field commander. He has all the know-how, the skill, the firepower and the experience, but he does it without the metaphysical aura bestowed on Prime by the Matrix (that's either Rodimus OR Optimus). While the Prime leads with a speech as well as in a charge, Ultra Magnus leads shoulder-to-shoulder with his troops, thinks logically rather than sympathetically, and is more objective-based than consequence-based with regards to duty.

I could almost hear Victor Caroli's voice when I read that.

I think I have a better understanding of who he is. I guess I was always trying to compare him with Optimus. Both are leaders, but Optimus leads with flare (he has a sense of humor and he relates to the Autobots). But Magnus is somewhat distant and unattached but still a great warrior. Yes, no?

Well, he couldn't deal with things, and felt that opening a coffin would use up too much of the energy reserves.

That picture is of his toy and there's nothing removable in there nor does it claim that to be the Matrix in the instructions. Actully I have no idea why his Autobot symbol flips up like that.
I guess it's easy to assume that is the Matrix and I can understand why you'd think that (I thought so too when I got the toy without haveing actully seen the cartoon) but it's not.
His chest never opens in the cartoon. Not in super mode or any other mode. The Matrix is only refered to as an energy, not an object. Anything beyond that is just your own speculation/opinion.

I'm assuming nothing. And I have the whole serries on DVD's.You have missunderstood the episodes in question of RID.In the Japanese instructions for Super Fire Convoy the flip up is refered to as where the Matrix is housed. And in the Japanese bio's at Takara's home page on TF car robots it is also mention.Further more in the RID cartoon when Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime first combine into Omega Prime Ultra Magnus referres to the Matrix as an object two different times.........I'll quote his words.
First from the begeining of the episide:::::::::::
UM to OP: When the Autobots were sent to stop Megatron THE Matrix chose you as IT'S inheriter, chose your being to in-power with IT'S energy, you to command the Autobots.
Now a quote from just before they combines:::::::::::::
UM:Your just as gullible as you always were Prime, now that your defencess are minimal I'll absorbe all your energy.
OP: No.....Stop!
UM:And once this forced fusion between us is complete I will be invincble....After I drain your energy I'll take THE MATRIX and return home as the rightfull king of Cybertron.
As you can see Ultra Magnus referes to The Matrix as having an energy to give to Optimus Prime. And he also referes to taking Primes energy so that Prime would be weak enough to have the Matrix removed from him.
I guess it's easy to assume that the Matrix is an enegy sorce.....and I can understand why you'd think that,But you should pay more atention to the dialoge in the episodes.
P.S. It is pictured in the U.S. instrustions but theres no metion of what it is.

The zMatrix in RID is an object. It is housed behing Optimus Prime super mode's Autobot symble just like the one on Lio Convoy.Altho in story Magnus was trying to drain the Matrix's energy. If I'm right RID Prime was the first U.S. released Prime to ever come with a Matrix.
That picture is of his toy and there's nothing removable in there nor does it claim that to be the Matrix in the instructions. Actully I have no idea why his Autobot symbol flips up like that.
Oh and the Matrix in the Armada toy and Lio Convoy arent removable ether. And you claimed that the Matrix in Armada was an object.....so tell me what is your criteria for judgeing what is an object and what is not.

But the Armada cartoon actully does show Prime remove the thing from his chest and he calls it the Matrix. The thing in RID Prime's chest is not ever refered to as such.
Maybe the Car Robots version calls it the Matrix but Robots in Disguse does not.
And now I'm off to find the episodes in question that you quoted previously to check their accuracy. I found them on YouTube once hopefully they're still there.
