Back to your scheduled programming.

Sorry for the crazy absence. My birthday just passed, I'm still in the middle of University finals, and I thought I'd let Counterpunch have a go at it. I didn't expect the real Counterpunch to show up on the list, but hey, it's hard to know when he's real nearby..

All I gotta say is that I accept Counterpunch as #18 on the list. I made the promise in the original post that I'd get 25 done by Christmas and I'm still set on that. I'm not sure if we'll get back to the day-to-day schedule because Biology sucks. So... without further ado....

#17 - Beast Wars Optimal Optimus

It's Prime time baby. The first Prime to crack the Top 20 is of the Beast Wars variety - Optimal Optimus. This figure is the epitome of a BEAST. I'm saddened that I can't do this figure enough justice in this summary.

Image

Look at that alternate mode.... It doesn't even look like one! Optimal Optimus isn't really much of an item for Beast Wars Purists as it looks like Optimus took the "Trukk not Monkee" slogan too seriously and ate the truck. The colors are beautiful and you don't see clear missiles these days. And you gotta, gotta love the chrome.

Image

I don't remember the tank mode too well from the cartoon...

Image

..because the Jet mode was freaking badass! I think my favourite part of it all was that it played to the 'jet' theme and actually has a cockpit. Why there's one in pre-historic Earth is a bit odd, but heck, Beast Wars is a bit odd to begin with.

Image

The robot moe is iconic and just gorgeous. Optimal Optimus may not have set the bar for transformation, weaponry or paint jobs, but he's better than that - he's just plain fun.

Image

The one thing that I absolutely LOVE about Beast Wars Transmetals, is that for the limited number of chracter that were actually in the show, their toys were pretty faithful to the CGI... more so than any other series to this day.

Image

Now the highlight of the reviews tend to be the repaints.. but it's not really this time around. Primal Prime kinda sucks. Perhaps it's just the Beast Machines effect taking place but the colours are unbearable for me. The face looks awful with the paint scheme.. and Translucent plastic should only be translucent clear, not red. Look what a bad colour scheme can do such a wonderful figure.

And that leaves us with Entry #17... I will surely see you a lot sooner than last time.

Cheers,
~Blurrz

Optimal Optimus is easily one of my favorite figures and probably THE best Beast Wars figure made. I love the character and how the toy looks exactly like the CGI model.

I also agree that Primal Prime's color scheme just sucked. I can't understand why he goes for so much on Ebay whereas you can find a good Op Op for about 30 bucks if you're patient enough. I got an Optimal Optimus to replace my old one for 25 dollars w/ the box, yet I've seen people charge 200 dollars for crappy Primal Prime.

Optimal Optimus is a great choice. :)

I'd love to get one some day. I know a lot of people don't like the design of the Beast era but I found that Optimal Optimus was just such a big and over the top design, it pushed aside the flaws in my eyes.

Optimal Optimus was a figure I find myself lucky to have gotten. A friend of my brother, upon hearing I was collecting Transformers again, simply gave it to me as well as an incomplete Tigerhawk and a slightly damaged TM2 Dinobot. My BW Collection kinda grew around those figures with OpOp at the center.
Great choice! Looking forward to the next entry.

Alright, sorry for another skip of a day, but my finals are finally over! That means I'll be posting more entries per day than the Detroit Lions D lets in Touchdowns. Let's kick it...

#16 - Armada Jetfire

Okay, I promise you this is the last WTF entry you'll see on this list. This is totally bias to the core. I think Transformers Armada is the bestest toy line ever, and you're just going to have to live with it. :)

Image

Jetfire. It's a beauty. A spaceship beauty. I can't go on with saying that this is the only spaceship Transformer, but it's probably the best. The sounds on Armada Jetfire are classics. You get a 'pew-pew' when you click it forward, and a countdown when you click it backwards.

Image
Image

The storage thing is a bit odd. I didn't even realize it had one, but I'm guessing you can augment the arms to make it so. (And I've had the figure since it came out. I'm such a slow Blurrz) I really like the interaction between Comettor and Jetfire. Makes the mini-con actually belong to Jetfire, than just some random addition.

Image
Image

Robot mode is a piece of beauty. It's just a menacing Ultra class figure. And come on, how can you not love the BMFG... It's just so Big! The one thing that's not pictured is the fact that Jetfiree can hold the Star Saber and the Skyboom shield - something that most figures in this line fail to do. A lot of people say he doesn't have good articulation or possibility. It's hard for me to justify it with words, but it's just a fun figure and nostalgic for me to not care about that.

Image

Combined mode is a bit chunky for me. But that's Armada. And the combination with Optimus Prime and Armada is just menacing badass.

Image

Repaints. Powerlinx Jetfire didnt really do much for me, but Astrotrain is pure beauty and a must-have.

Image

So all in all..... No University has not fried my brain into ****, I think Armada Jetfire is one of the best figures out there. Shows that Ultra class figures don't always have to be the complete package to be good. The sense of a 'good' and 'bad' figure should never be designated just because the figure lacks 'decent' articulation. Transformers are meant to transform, not to compete with articulation of Gi Joe figures.

Image

What does Jetfire do for the Transformers fandom? Well he's chalked up as one of the fan favourites. His name has some pretty good longevity in Transformers toylines. A/E/C Jetfire has some pretty solid figures all around, but the reason Armada got in is totally because it's a spaceship... not because of the Armada bias....

And that's game. Don't worry... there's only one other Armada figure on this list. ;)

I do like Armada Jetfire, despite his stumpy-ass robot mode. I think it's the whole "Behold! My JetPants" thing he and Prime have going on.

I agree.

I tell you though, I found Armada Jetfire early when he came out.

I was broke, buying mostly ramen noodles for subsistance. I hid that Armada Jetfire in a local WalMart for the better part of a week until financial aid came in.

Also? spending $26 on a Transformer was ridiculous at that time! $26...unbelievable...

Jetfire was one of my very first Armada buys. And he is fantastic. I just love how he transforms, and how he looks in both modes. He's an awesome figure yes he is.

And the fact that he has a "holster" for his gun when he's combined with Prime is a great little feature.

Sadly my Comettor broke, so now Jetfire no longer has landing gear. Still he's a great figure.

I'm really liking this list. Lost of unconventional transformers. I had a feeling that it would end up being nothing but Gee Wun swooning, but the fact that you actually have Beast Wars AND Armada toys on this list makes me look forward to every entry every day. Keep up the good work and thanks for not letting this turn into a "ZOMG! G1 is teh roxx!!" festival.
