They may be novices in online services but this quote from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is very promising:

It's an extreme example, but I think there are examples of games where you get that initial purchase — the very core part of the game — and everything else around it is all DLC. However, if you do that I believe customers will have no motivation to go out and buy the retail package to begin with.
Day 1 DLC with FOC was a joke. There is no reason that should have been held back for DLC. At least I got it free when I downloaded the PS3 version from the store. I also hate when companies rerelease a game with Game of the Year editions that come with all the DLC in one package.
