Though it did look a bit gundam-esque. I think maybe the designs were chosen so they wouldn't remind you of anything you'd seen previous. That said, they were chosen so that future TF designs didn't have a resemblence (and so avoiding paying the studio)

and i was one of many against the new look of our most beloved robots. but i will admit the clips iv seen look great but they still took to much of what made this a possibilty out with out g1 this film would not exsist. bay could have at least took more care in there look..
i just hope films 2&3 robots improve in looks ie a little bit more g1ish and no more insect heads

that's pretty damn impressive! finally, i see what a live action tf should look like. it's kinda bittersweet seeing that since that's what should be in the movie instead of the retarded, bug faced, walking junk piles that we are getting.. typical how clueless hollywood is.

Oh yeah, the clips look amazing. It's just clear that for the the G1ers got shortchanged a bit.

"Yes its a Transformers film BUT we're changing it enough that you'll have to work hard to believe so ;D"

Bit bulky robots is a little too cartoony for me. Luckily I grew up with Beast Wars so organic looking robots (talking about the Transmetals) sort of fit quite well. This video shows us what could've been, and maybe I'm too used to the new movie guys to like is as much as I might've.

It's obviously Tracks, but the yellow screams Sunstreaker. Take off the wings and change the head; I could see the model as Sunstreaker. Maybe some of these people should team up to do a Transformers: Alternators movie. Come to think of it, that would be kind of cool to accompany the DVD release of the theatrical movie. It's not like the auto dealers who worked with Hasbro wouldn't want their cars advertised more. Probably not enough time for this movie; maybe they could work it by the DVD release of the second. Man, I love imagining lost opportunities and wasted potential.

i know im going to get it by saying this but who cares im saying it anyway this Michael Smith guy is good he should try out for the big companies like ilm for example.

and now for the trouble response yes i do like the orignal cartoon look of the transformers but im glad m bay made them look like the way do now some heads could use touch up here and there but i can live with that like it states this film is going to be new direction look for how the transformers look in the that was great clip that ive seen but im glad they dont look like that in the film its to cartoonish looking for me its like taking the first transformers movie and turning it into live action for me its boring looking im fan M. smith work but M bay transformewrs look desgins in the film i like alot more than what everyone else would have wanted for example this clip of that yellow car to blocky looking reminds me of what i would expect a live action transformers show to look like on saturday morining in live action format thats what this clip reminds me of anyway.

Okay, the problem with the original G1 designs was that they lacked realistic mass distribution, and the way the toys were designed, you couldn't fit real passengers inside. The Live Action Movie designs tried to address this issue by making all of the robot forms 30 feet tall... That seems to make the problem WORSE, doesn't it? I mean, has anyone here actually SEEN a Pontiac Solstice? DEFINITELY too small to translate into a 30-foot tall robot. I even think Bumblebee's too big; he's the smallest one! At most, the Camaro Bumblebee should look to be about 18-20 ft. I think they just wanted to play up the "Giant Robot" thing as much as they could. But come on; Jazz is a much smaller Car than Bumblebee. If he ends up as tall or taller in the Movie, we can throw the entirety of what these guys said about these designs shooting for "Realism" out the window.

End of Speech.

Lets try to get him to animate a movie with real voice cast anf cgi and stuff and it gets more hits then bay and bat cry.

well jazz IS smaller than bumblebee, i think he's even under 20 feet so that part's good..lol

and as for mr smith, while i dont think that stuff would work in a live action movie..it would look cool in an animated series...i mean the CGI in beast wars was good for its time...but the CGI/cell shaded look they use in these later series just looks terrible...but smith's style could work and be cool looking

does anyone know how much time passed between the volkswagon and the nissan? because this was my first time seeing both and there's a noticeable quality difference between the two so if its a short time, dude's a quick learner..go him

Eh, it was cool. Not really all that impressive though. The car looked fake as it was turning the corner, as it did turning into a robot. The movment in bot mode was cool, but, I dunno, didn't really look like it belonged there. Not saying this in defense of the movie design at all, mind you. I have a friend who does 3D animation/graphic design(he actually works for Midway games), and I've seen him do much better. Guess I'm spoiled.

Does anyone else think the animation looks like the Jazz eyecatch? where he transforms and shoots while spinning in a circle?

Not that that detracts from the coolness factor in the least. It's still a sweet video. (to me at least)

I agree with Wolfguard. This could probably be in a TV show, but films have higher standards. That clip was awesome, but the movie designs look more realistic.

In the movie Jazz is pretty small. Bumblebee is larger than him. Although I do agree that BB is way too tall.

Im a G1 er and im happy as hell that they didnt go with a G1 boxy look.. I got tired of seeing the same robot form over and over and over, repaint after repaint .. These 3D clips are cool but to make a movie using them would have been a flop in my eyes.. I like that this movie went to a whole new level and didnt go with the boring look of whats been thrown at us over the years. It's going to be a killer movie , i cant wait to see it ...

From my understanding, he and a friend did this back in 2004, but they never completely finished it and now he's decided to release it from his 'vault'. So that would be why it says 2004 yet has Vince DiCola's new TF tune in it.

I just wonder if he's got a few more in his vault he hasnt released yet. I also agree with some people, this would look good for like a direct-to-dvd version of Alternators.

That was cool, but I have to agree with the new movie designs looking more realistic. I support the designs because we needed a change from the norm, by the way Spiderman 3 was alright but I think transformers is going to be way better.

I'm sorry, I love that, must have been really hard work to look that great. And I still don't like "the new" look for Transformers in the movie, give me the "norm" and "the boxy" look anytime. I never thought roaches in disguised with metal as sexy, just me though. I don't really care for realistic look crap. That's just Bay's excuse to create living morphing ugly aliens for his robot movie. Gee, I guess I'm still bitter about that. I guess I'm saying ....

Good job on that effort for a realistic appoach of a Transformer, Mr. Michael Smith, sweet indeed. :)

I'm of the camp that believes my Transformers should look like walking bricks. Congrats to you Michael Smith, hope you release more. If this was constructed on a low budget, imagine what he may have produced with studio support. Ahh, the dreams and fantasies...
Re: New Michael Smith Transformers 3D model clip (131123)
Posted by Ultra Magnus on May 22nd, 2007 @ 9:49am EDT
"Walking Bricks"? Well, I don't necessarily agree with that. But the Classic look is in fact the "Look" of the Transformers. Now, as an artist of sorts, I definitely appreciate fresh perspectives on these characters, but there are certain design elements that simply should never be overlooked. These corporate entities just don't seem to fully understand that. One example of what I'm talking about is Bumblebee's horns. Another is Megatron's Fusion Cannon. Megatron should ALWAYS have a HUGE GUN on his arm. Switch it to the left if you want, but Megatron HAS to have the huge gun and the Bucket Head. This new megatron does have the Bucket Helmet, but they definitely could have done something in the way of giving him his obligatory Fusion Cannon. Optimus Prime should ALWAYS have the Face Shield. I also found hit customary "Red Shirt" and "Blue Pants" motif to be characteristic as well.

Now, I must give them their credit where it's due. Based on everything I've seen, these characters are, in fact, still true at the core. After goofing around with Ryan's Leader Class Optimus Prime figure, I must say that even with the Longnose cab and flames, you can still tell it's Optimus Prime. Same with Bumblebee. But, giving the characters mouths when they should have the muzzle, and giving muzzles to the characters that should have mouths just doesn't make ANY sense.

The "Blocky" designs are a part of what makes Transformers what they are. But, after seeing a series like Beast Wars, where a similar design aesthetic was employed, albeit on completely new characters and minus mechanical alt modes, I have faith in the characters that ILM and Dreamworks' staff have created.

Michael Smith would probably last about 10-11 rounds against Michael Bay. But Bay's got more hired muscle.

jiggsaw-formers should be the official name for the Movie bots. I just like how in the movie the bits are all complex but the toys are just standard TF figures with blockyness. Like ive been saying the toys are going to be better than the movie. But to get back on topic, If some guy could make a cool clip like this then ILM will be able to make it 200 time better. I think ILM should make a G1 style Webisode just to see how the G1 bots would look in the new movie. That way we all will now if the old bots would've worked in the movie or not.

you want G1 movies watch robot chicken lol .The toys are cool but the movie bots are a million times better. There is no way to make a toy as complex as the movie robots lol , if they did its would probably cost like 2 grand lol, and i myself would not want to try and transform it lol.. None of these toys are geared towards collectors this is why you wont see complex toys, they're made for kids. The're are more kids out there then collectors and hasbro is going to target them before a collector lol. Collectors get the masterpiece series , thats about it ...
If they made a movie using the style this guy used in this home made thing, i honestly would not go see the movie because it would be like every other clone of G1 that hs been released as cartoons.. I cant believe people are not sick of seeing the same junk over and over.. G1 was great yeah but that was the 80's man, got to wake up its 2007.. G1 is history let grandpa retire in peace and let the new come in and take over.. Im a G1-er from the beginning and im glad they did what they did to all the robots in the movie.

I guess their marketing worked. Michael Bay won. A G1er now thinks the jiggsaw-formers are superior to the originals. I will now go eat my hat. Sad face 1,000,000 :(

Their marketing worked? Not on me, I'm not buying any of those movie toys, they suck harder than Wheelie's rhymes. Giving in to the whole brainwashing -"boxy" bad, "roaches" are in!.., now that's just silly. :P

Nah, seriously, I love my G1 designs, and BW designs, etc, but I'm just not feeling it with the movie. I'm sure they must be better looking on the big screen, but that's it, I don't want the ugly movie toys, but that's another topic.

I think all in all, Smith did a really nice job, really amazing job!

Yeah, I just don't get the whole "We have to make them look real and believable!" arguement they spin to us and then look at their designs and they all look like giant monster insects. Heck, they don't even look like robots! Let Alone Transformers, they don't even look like machines in robot mode!

And does anyone remember that CGI Test that looked like Sideswipe that everyone thought was for the new movie way back a year or 2 ago? That there showed it could have worked if given a bit more time and effort into it.

I just don't know what I'm going to do after this movie comes out. I get a sense that there really will be nothing for me to enjoy afterward and thus I'll be losing interest in Transformers... since transformers as I enjoyed it might cease to exist. I don't know if there will be anything within the property for me ouside the comics. As long as Titaniums are going there is that, but that isn't supposed to last much longer is it?

:(

That would actually make an awesome new Autobot character! I love the transformation and the look in robot mode! The wings with the doors is pretty new (never seen that blades pointing down that look like feathers kind of thing) but still stays true to the Transformers traditional look. I love it!

I really like this footage. If a fan can do that, I could only imagine what a real Pro studio could do with a design like that!

They would have to modify the material in the face a bit though. That is the only thing really holding it back from total 3D 'in our world' kind of appearence.

But still, this is a great start to show what could have been done and then developed for the movie.

Hollywood does NOT know best! If they did, they never would have tried to give Superman a Black leather suite and have him live in outer space using his belt as a sword weapon! :puke Glad that movie never got made!

what would be cool is if mr.smith made his versions of, lets say, prime, screamer, jazz, and bumblebee and then compare them to their fugly movie counterparts. then we'll truly see how retarded and clueless bay and his team was and is. the bottomline is that michael smith is a tf fan and bay and everyone else involved never were no matter what they claim. if we got a director who actually was a fan and knew the history and actually respected our opinions it would have been a whole different ballgame but instead we have the biggest debacle ever. hey michael, i hope you keep making these great vids so i can have some hope for a future live action movie.
