Haha, I’ve gotten way too used to the way he looks now, couldn’t do it without the chicken legs!

SwerveGears wrote:What about Voyager Prime? Especially the Robo-Vision version- it was the most accurate transformable version of Prime back in those days!

Robo-Vision’s a great figure, and the paint application is all-star, but ultimately the mold is inferior to HFTD Battle Blades Optimus Prime. In turn, the Voyager Prime molds are inferior to the Leader versions, IMO.

Megatron Wolf wrote:i dont understand why hasbro doesnt repaint that arcee instead of reusing the ROTF mold over & over again. Id also like to see final battle Jazz get repainted instead of the normal version of that mold. And why no love for realgear, those little guys kicked ass

RG are great office desk toys, but they’re just not my type.

thunderjacker wrote:definitely agree with this list, however, i believe the the 2007 wreckage mold was cheated out of it. sure, the paint scheme was weak but the mold is awesome, well articulated and well armed.

ShadowBlaze wrote:
Wreckage: This should have been Movie Megatron. The menacing head-sculpt strongly resembles G1 Megatron, and the level of articulation in this toy is top-notch. And it has relatively little kibble, so nothing is going to keep him from taking any number of threatening poses. The versatility of his dual swords and the multiple connection points also make his my favourite weapons of all the movie-style Deluxes. The ROTF Bludgeon repaint is equally impressive and works well as a hybridized Bayverse/G2 Megatron.

Autobot Genocide wrote:I also think that Wreckage should have been in there .

As much as I want to put Wreckage on the list… he looks bloodthirsty and all, but nothing stays place on the figure. His automorph does not lock, his limbs are flimsy, and his alternate mode is snooze worthy. Plus, the way his horn is being honked here, he’s far from obscure :P

monarch420 wrote:Big Daddy is the only one not on the list.

He’s a phenomenal figure, but he just doesn’t fit into the movie aesthetic. He’d be a great addition to a Classics collection, mostly because he’s a G1 homage, but also because his robot mode is chunky and just doesn’t fit in with the movie aesthetic, unlike some other Cybertron/Classics Movie-repaints, like Fracture.

Galvatron X wrote:Secondly, I loved that article because it showcased figures I've never been familiar with (I only started buying TFs again when ROTF came out). I'm now on the lookout for that EVAC, Cliffjumper, and that Salvage!

Thanks for reading. You’ve been Counterpunched Blurrz’d! :P

BATTOUSAI XD wrote:Nice list! I really wish I would have gotten leader brawl; I'm really regretting it now that it goes for about 80 dollars on eBay... I have to disagree about leader Megatron though, I thought he was about as close to the cgi as a figure that price could have gotten. Sure the first paint job sucked but I thought the premium one was great. I was so disappointed with rotf leader megs. Hopefully we'll get one for dotm; I know they could do a great job with that.

Then let us hope he gets a DOTM version. Looking back on what I said, I honestly can’t list any reasons why the ROTF Leader is better than the 2007 Leader…

sabrigami wrote:A very enjoyable read, gj Blurrz :APPLAUSE: . This is very interesting to me because I didn't start collecting until the tail end of RotF, so I didn't know what came out before then. After reading this I'm going to have to get my hands on that Arcee mold. That's one hot figure even in the G1 Arcee redeco.

There are a ton of great figures that you may have overlooked! There’s 25+ years of Transformers that deserve to be looked at. Arcee’s a fantastic mold and you won’t be disappointed. The Black/G1 versions are rather expensive though…

robofreak wrote:
Big Daddy used a Cybertron mold. This article focuses on the movie molds.

Not necessarily. I would’ve put some of the Cybertron/Classics molds into this editorial, but I just don’t think they fit. Plus Wal*Mart exclusives were horrid to find in 2007. I don’t even want to talk about it…

MINDVVIPE wrote:Oh, what could have been if they didn't have to stay constrained to the movie aesthetic. :-(

If that was what we got originally, that would have been so legit.

xyl360 wrote:I picked up Incinerator recently on ebay to repaint as my pre-Beast Wars Scorponok and he looks great. I pulled off the blades (he's posed in bot mode of course) and painted the nubs that the blades were connected to in a nice red so that they resemble his missiles that are concealed in his pincers from the show and I covered up all that teal/allspark blue with purple and gray where applicable to make it match the paint layout of his Beast Wars CGI counterpart.

I also have Cliffjumper even though I have yet to own even a single movieverse Bumblebee. I always despised movie BB, but that car in those colors was just too good to pass up :).

Your article also made me want to buy an Arcee :P.

Incinerator as Scorponok is a pretty slick idea! Are you done repainting the figure? Show us if you are, or when you’re done!
I wish I just stopped at Cliffjumper in terms of the Camaros too man. And best of luck hunting Arcee!

ShadowBlaze wrote:Voyager Ironhide (Premium): The fragility of the windshield on his back irritates me, and his shoulders are tighter than the pegs that keep his torso together. And still, he's just a really solid, impressive toy, and I strongly prefer the more idealized, less film-accurate proportions of this figure over his later incarnations. He's highly articulated and surprisingly stable, so he can hold all the great battle stances befitting a born soldier. While the Premium version's paint job is also a little less true to the screen, it does a fantastic job of highlighting all the wonderful sculpted details of his 'bot mode which were lost in the wall of black on the original.

Voyager Ironhide was phenomenal, but at the same time, I just felt that it was over the top. Anyone from a winter city would know that snow does not build up on the top of windows, and the fact that there is snow on the windows of Ironhide is a bit absurd. Even if it isn’t meant to be snow… it looks like snow to me! I feel that the Leader version is a great representation of Ironhide, and even at the Voyager scale, it’s a mix and mash of a couple of Voyager figures that make an ideal Ironhide..

ShadowBlaze wrote:Protoform Optimus Prime: Sure, the alt-mode is little more than a Cybertronian rock with thrusters. But what's so impressive is how smooth and seamless that rock appears, given the angular aesthetics of the Bayverse 'bots. Even more curious is that OP's 'bot mode looks incredibly organic, like the next evolution of something from Beast Wars, rather than the blockiness of the classic TF style. Again, this is a toy with impressive articulation and relatively little obtrusive kibble. I'm actually rather sad that HasTak never re-used this sculpt as I think it could be perfect for creating an army of generic film-style soldiers.

Giant Purple Griffin wrote:I like the list, and like others, I agree that Protoform Prime should be in there. I got him from Amazon last summer for about 15 bucks since he had that form in the movie, but I didn't start collecting the toys until he was gone from the shelves in 2007. I love him! I pose him on the corner of a shelf in a Cybertronian "I'll take you all on" standoff with HftD Fallen, '07 Voy Megatron, DotM Shockwave, RotF Soundwave, and RotF Ravage

Protoforms were decent, but I dunno, they weren’t that great of a representation of Prime, and their alternate mode doesn’t give me the feel of a Transformer.

Image
Now if you want to talk about these Protoforms, then by all means, let’s talk about these Fusion Cluster Protoforms. =3. These exclusives are beauties, and if you like Protoforms so much, then these are something you might want to check out. These would’ve been on the list, but y’know, I don’t want to drive the prices up on exclusives that some might still have a problem finding. ^_^

Nekoman wrote:Personally, I feel that in retrospect the 2007 movie line has little worth going back to now. A few of those examples were pretty cool (Stockade FTW), but Arcee was a terrible figure in my opinion. Albeit she was better than her ROTF counterpart, a worse figure doesn't make a bad figure any better.

Plus a lot of the figures just didn't feel durable, like Longarm for example had parts that felt like they'd give too much, and if we venture onto figures that didn't make the list you have the original Bumblebee, deluxe Brawl, voyager Ironhide... Maybe I'm just too old fashioned.

On the bright side I felt they did real good on the redecos. The red Dropkick repaint was good, so was Cliffjumper and even Jungle Bonecrusher was an improvement, in some respects. Plus if you count the Walmart exclusive deluxes like Fracture, and Crankcase I'd almost say the line did have some of the best repaints ever made. Heck, Crankcase didn't even need a new head and he was still better than the Kup Funpub made.

Hope that doesn't make me sound like a downer though, it's cool to go back and think about these lines a few years later. Nice write up!

What makes Arcee terrible? Give me some reasons why, because all I see is a fantastic figure, with a great dimensions.

If you’re putting Longarm on the stake, then you might as well put the rest of the line on their too. Longarm is sturdy, sure the plastic isn’t “hard, durable, I can knock my younger cousin out with this” plastic, but it’s still plastic.

And you’re never a downer Nekoman, not everyone is a sugar coater like me =3.

EShadowP wrote:I have all of these toys and I agree with most of the article but:

Buy/Sell/Trade Forums are great, you just need to do research on who you’re buying from. And if the one here doesn’t float your boat, the B/S/T at TFW2005/Cybertron.ca might be to your liking.

GetRightRobot wrote:Nice work on the article Blurrz. I am right there with you, especially on the Arcee's. HOWEVER, I can't help feel like you missed the mark on the Hoist repaint. IMO, it serves as the ideal use. Even the head sculpt shares the 4 slats and has a surprisingly Non-movieverse styled head. This guy fits in perfectly between Classics and Movie.

Haha, perhaps I did undermine Hoist in my article, but man, he was awful to pick up. TRU thought i'd be cool to troll fans by spiking those prices up on their two-packs. Bludgeon/Whirl was monstrous expensive, and so was this one.

kirbenvost wrote:I also don't know why the Deluxe Brawl figure gets such a bad rap. It's one of my favorites. Maybe people just don't like how small he is.

Small figures are great. But my beef with Brawl was that arms problem that my figure had. And I’m not going out of my way to sculpt some plastic out, or pay $15 now to get the figure again. Leader had none of those problems, and everything wasn’t green on the Leader either..

BeastProwl wrote:Swindle?

Autobot-Hellstriker wrote:Although i'm not pleased with the fact that you didn't let any of the important characters onto the list and only went after very obscure characters.

Even if did put in, as you say, popular characters, It wouldn’t gel with me well. It would be like selling someone a used car when the newer, better version is only a few hundy more.

Barricade got a better figure in ROTF, both in Deluxe and Human Alliance. Ironhide as well, and Optimus Prime too. Bumblebee’s seen so many incarnations that I’d rather not count. Megatron’s ’07 figures might be the best figures that he’s gotten in the past 3 toy lines, but they’re still questionable. Leader Starscream is the way to go, and Ratchet’s much like Megatron. I did put Jazz and Brawl in this list, and Bonecrusher… everyone knows about Bonecrusher, and he hates that. But yeah, if one were to read through my entire editorial, one would know why some of these obscure characters made it into the list, rather than their predecessor paint scheme.

Hey thanks for responding. Again, the article was a nice read and good break from straight up current events. As for the TRU 2-packs, I didn't think the prices were bad. Voyager + Deluxe = $30. I can still get those 2 packs at my TRU now for $19.99, which is sad. The Wal-Mart exclusives ROCKED! The Getaway styled Cybertron HotShot is pure win. One of the best re-purposed figures I have!

Hahaha, no way? They're still at your TRU..... that's religiously crazy.

Our next treasures editorial looks to be either Alternators by Counterpunch or Armada cowritten by both of us. We'll see how it all pans out, but it'll probably be out in August. Things like these require alot of creative Energon. ;)

Hey Blurrz, are you going to do this for ROTF (and HFTD) also? I just thought that was overall a better line than the '07-'08 line and I'm curious to see what you'd list.
Please note: If you think I may be joking, I probably am.

Thinking about it, "terrible" might've been a wee bit harsh, but what can I say, I'm a harsh person. >:oP

I didn't like how her gun attached to her arms, plus she was real clunky around that area which made it hard for her to pose with it if I recall. Hasbro then ruined her face with the lightpipping in her mouth, it would have been fine if not for that, but the glowing mouth just was too much for me.

Likewise with Longarm, I felt he was a great figure, but transforming him made me nervous for his hood/feet and doors. Mine might've just been too tight, but those parts always felt so glassy to me, like they'd snap if you weren't careful. It was much worse on other figures, but it still bothered me about him.

I wanted to say that in the beginning, but I've seen it in the past. No one can recognize his brilliance. In my own personal Tans-verse, Swindle succeeded Megatrons leadership after Megatron was killed by the new Auto-bot leader, Skids.

I'll do ROTF+HFTD at once. It'll probably have some exclusives in it too, simply because Takara just lit it up with that line, while Hasbro failed in many parts. Heck, I'm tempted to do an anti-treasures portion too because there are some molds that I want to throw into my fireplace. Regardless, I'd rather put the spotlight on a handful of toylines that haven't seen much love on our front page. We've got a 10th Anniversary coming up for a line, among other things. Next up is Kiss Players!!!!!!!!!!! (not serious)

The apparent dislike of Swindle doesn't necessarily surprise me as he appears rather bland
Image
When you start to take a closer look he gets more interesting.
He features a spring loaded rocket booster in the back and his hood can be swiveled in car mode to give it a raised engine look due to his highly robotic looking head. These features exposed in car mode are almost a precursor to the Stealth mode used in the DOTM.
Not so much as weaponry, but a conveyance of speed. Something a scout would be able to utilize.

It's interesting that on one hand we are encouraged to accept change for some characters, but not for others, like Swindle, or his Autobot repaint Camshaft Image
If they had just painted all silver parts of Camshaft, like they did the doors, the toy would look stunning. I will admit the Burgundy could be a different color.
He also gives a pre- DOTM Jolt vibe to meImageImage

Swindle and Camshaft remind me of the 80's toyline Starriors. Which were weird looking robots with nonhuman looking faces and damaging weapons protruding from their chests.
(Only Starrior I have is the Snake base, missing everything.)

I might be the only one, but I don't hate the '07 movie Swindle\Camshaft toy.

Nicely done, good writing and love the choices you made here. I have most of these figures except for the Arcee repaints, the black Incinerator (I WANT that one!), and Cliffjumper. I STILL hope for a leader class (or even Supreme class) figure of Blackout. Hell, Bumblebee got a "Masterpeice" version, why not Blackout? Everyone wants it, everyone would pay for it out the nose. Then again, if they did a masterpeice version, they just might make him a repaint of the voyager mold. Bah.

Anyhow, great work.

I would love a Supreme class Blackout! Hasbro would definitely make money; they could even make it a store or online exclusive just make sure it wouldn't be overstocked anywhere.

nice list. not really a fan of the movie verse designs but there's a few in there that look pretty good.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

What was the deal with the allspark blue anyway? Surely no one thought that was a good design choice. Did they just have a surplus of the stuff they needed to get rid of or something?

Great article, I agree with most of your picks. The only one I feel was missing is Wreckage - a really great deluxe.

I think Evac and Long Arm make a great duo, they share a white/orange/grey/blue colour scheme and both have a rescue/repair vibe.

I think the original 'Concept Camaro' Bumblebee mould was the best, I've thought since the beginning that it was a great base to repaint/retool into other characters, I always thought it would look amazing done in white as Bug Bite.

Hasbro disagrees, hence the 35 yellow Bumblebee variants.

I'm a big fan of Dropkick, he's one of the very few movie deluxes I actually bought and he's great. I also regret not buying Longarm while he was on the shelves, I'd forgotten what a nice looking figure he is. But...no Wreckage? I always thought he was by far and away the best looking figure in that whole line - stocky, sturdy and badass in every way. Also was Landmine in the first movie line? I lose track, cos he was good too, although perhaps not a 'hidden treasure' since he was pretty popular. Actually that could probably go for Wreckage too now I think about it...Well I talked myself out of that one pretty well didn't I?

Awesome list, completely agree on Leader Brawl. Probably my favorite TF toy ever, also one of the few if not the only one I still own.

I was kinda expecting Wreckage too, what with the sleek RED BLADES OF DEATH thing he had. Plus the chest cannon was cool.

Honestly, I've wanted a Bigger Blackout since my younger brother first picked up the Voyager along with Deluxe Scorponok and immediately noticed something was wrong. Supreme would be cool, though I think they'd probably go with Leader if they made one at all.

After seeing the first wave or 2 of figures from the '07 movie line, I ignored the rest of the line as well as the ROTF line. It looks like I made a mistake - you pointed out some darn cool toys.

I guess I'll have to start paying attention to the DOTM line now.

Except Blackout is not a fan favourite, nor a vital character. Bumblebee on the other hand... And FYI, Brawl just got lucky.

Nice list, keep up the good work.

Blackout is my favourite character (I use that term loosely) from the movies. The best looking and most badass in every scene... but of course, somehow Decepticons always have to lose in the movies... to humans...
Even with a somewhat sub-par figure, I cannot have a TF collection without him in it :CON:

HI, what I have found interesting is that the toys that are lost gems in each movie line are always the guys not featured in the film. 2007 movie figures arcee, longarm, and, evac are not in the film. ROTF movie figures thurst, dirge, and mindwipe are not seen on screen. And now DOTM movie figures skyhammer and my new favorite commander class blackout who are not in the movie.

I'm surprised not to see Landmine not on the list, I created this little story that him and Longarm were brothers and came to Earth after hearing Optimus' message, sort'a like a better imagined Skids and Mudflap

Very true. I believe that's in part to their robot modes not being bogged down by movie-CGI.

Welcome to Seibertron.com!

I did have an explanation of why I didn't put Landmine in the list, under Stockade's explanation. And that's pretty much because Landmine just has way, way, way too much Allspark Teal, and his repaint, Armorhide, and even the one packed with Starlight Prime, Comettor, feel better. To each their own, I suppose.

And I would have loved Longarm + Landmine instead of Skids + Mudflap.

Great article and great list. I agree with most of these entries, but I also have my own picks.

Arcee is a great design, and it rather bugged me that they dumped this look entirely and gave us the unicycle eyesore in ROTF.

Dropkick is probably my favorite 2007 mold. He's unique, well done, and has an alt mode we hardly ever see. The Salvage repaint fails IMO though, because this is a slammed street custom pickup, not a junkyard wrecker.

I passed on Cliffjumper because I have a strict no movie repaint rule.

Longarm is a fantastic mold. I sold mine when I got the Hoist repaint though. Again, no movie repaints.

I disgree with Evac's inclusion here. The remolding was clever and worked well, however the base Blackout mold was terrible IMO (I sold mine) and this hulking, monstrous design is much more suited to a Con than a brightly colored friendly neighborhood rescue bot.

Stockade is fantastic. I love his headsculpt, the Allspark blue works on him, and he looks powerful. Win all around.

I passed on Final Battle Jazz, I stuck with the Premium version. Either way its not a good mold and they really need to redo him in deluxe scale, death of the character notwithstanding.

I passed on Leader Brawl because I don't buy Leader figures.

I do like Incinerator, but his G2-like colors are a little loud, and the lack of hands is slightly annoying.

Landmine and Wreckage are two fantastic molds, both of which received far superior repaints in the ROTF line, so I can see why they were left off this particular list. Im still trying to track down a loose green Wreckage repaint so I can sell the white one.

I had Swindle, hated it, sold it within a week. Thankfully it was still before the movie came out, so I didnt sell at too much of a loss.

I do have one more addition to this list that no one else seems to like: Payload, the Decepticon armored truck. Sure he's small and has a lensface, and that claw gimmick. But is robot mode is insanely detailed, and I love his colors and not often seen alt mode. I thought about removing the claw but it reminds me of Barricade's grabby headlights in the movie. I can see why others dislike this mold, but he is one of my favorites. I tend to root for the underdog.

Bonecrusher is not obscure, but he is one of my favorites despite his small size. Still waiting on Hasbro to give us a Voyager Bonecrusher, Voyager Brawl, and Leader Blackout, or at least a new Voyager Blackout.

I really wonder why we haven't seen more cliffjumpers in the movie line. I mean, we have some 70 variations of bumblebee. Not sure how many actual unique molds to work with, but I think they could make another cliffjumper.

IDEA
Since Battle Blades Bumblebee is now to big in comparison to the other autobots,(I bought DOTM BB for scale reasons, plus the updated chest) But would it be such a bad thing to re-paint it into cliffjumper, give him a new head, and like, IDK, A Mechtech hammer? He's a warrior and we've yet to see a hammer to my knowledge.
that, or re-paint 70's cammaro bb.
you know what? They should re-make the old cammaro bumblebee, and make him more screen accurate. that's just my opinion.
