Dear ‘Bay & Company’,

I saw your Teaser Trailer recently (or I guess what is supposed to be the Announcement Trailer or something ) for Dark of the Moon and I have to say, it’s not quite what I was expecting. I have also spoken with other people (some not even true Transformers fans...meaning people that have just 'jumped on the bandwagon' because everyone else is excited) and they feel the same way…especially those individuals who were lucky enough to see you and your team filming on location in the cities around the country. Your trailer would have made PERFECT sense if it was the first trailer for the first movie – but we are going into the third and perhaps final movie…and all this trailer does is make NO sense!?! It just makes us ask more questions and say; “WTF”?

I still haven't lost my excitement though for the potential “AWESOMENESS” of this third movie, so I got rejuvenated and put together something for us (G1) fanboys, because for some reason, you’re not doing it for us (at the moment, anyway).

The video is most of my footage from your location shoot here in Chicago over the summer. And I did what I set out to do...see Optimus Prime in person and then some (check out the very end) and I thank you sssoooo much for that opportunity! The video is up on YouTube (the link is below) - hopefully it will go viral and it gets back to you (or someone on your team) that at least one true fan is still waiting for something more from you and your crew!!! Something more retro and something more to pay homage to the best toyline EVER from the '80's!!! (and quite possibly from any decade!)
All the talk and hype this last year of all the new Transformers, storyline and locations...and all we get for a teaser trailer (or announcement trailer or whatever) is some Transformer stuck on the moon back in '69? Why not play a Bryan Adams song while you’re at it guys? I thought you had REAL Transformers fans working for you Bay!?!

So, once again, you and your team went a different direction and failed to energize us fanboys with anything spectacular - so I'm stepping in until you can get it together to give us something REALLY cool to drool over and get excited about (which I hear might be tomorrow)! And for you writers…the storyline for these movies didn't have to be this complicated either!?! Here's what I mean:

The Transformers crash land on Earth, the Autobots then have to conceal themselves while they try and find the AllSpark (I just used that because they had already made it up) and a way back home, all while keeping the human race safe from the Decepticons - sound familiar? You could have gotten five or so movies just out of that alone...I mean, for crying out loud, look at what the Harry Potter franchise accomplished!
So now, come July...it better make since why there's a Transformer stuck up on the moon in some spaceship or whatever and why no one mentioned that in the last two films. With all of their superior technology, the Transformers knew about the AllSpark flying around in our galaxy for crying out loud…you would think they would have noticed one of their huge spaceships disappearing somewhere in the same region!?! Do I sound upset yet? : /

In the meantime, while you’re working on figuring that out, I put together this video with my dinky little laptop and footage I shot on my dinky little pocket camera from your AWESOME Chicago location shoot over the summer and I, for one, think it's so much better than what was thrown together for your trailer with all the fancy Hollywood tools you and your team have to work with.
But I guess that's because I'm a bonafide fan - I grew up in the best decade ever where we didn't need fancy or complicated stuff to make us happy. So I put in what you're missing - Transformers we actually know (and have come to love) with some '80's nostalgia...it's amazing what one song can do with a couple of sound bites!

‘Bay & Company’: If you don't pay homage to us 35+ year-olds who made Transformers what they are today...I mean, we luv ya for rebooting the series/toyline and all...just don't end it on a bad note for us...or we just might have to protest...even more. And I’m not talking about just a clip showing what a Transformer used to look like in the ‘80’s i.e. Bumblebee – or having Optimus saying one of his iconic lines - I’m talking about using a Stan Bush song somewhere, or giving us more Transformers we actually know and grew up with and quit making up new ones! You already have three new NASCARS so, hopefully you’re doing a revision of Menasor, the Ferrari better be Hot Rod and the Bentley better be Doublespy and please oh please do not do to Shockwave what you did to Soundwave and Jetfire – that was embarrassing. And you did not even come close to giving Devastator his just dues. Besides, we already have to put up with Skids and Mudflap! (I did read rumors though that they will not be in Dark of the Moon, but that will just raise another question – where did they go or what happened to them? So just don’t leave them out, show a clip of them being smashed up or something fun - I mean, for some reason, you killed off Jazz right away in a silly “squeaking” manner!?! Skids and Mudflap better go down in a trash compactor or something! ; )

Well, I really hope you take these thoughts/requests into consideration...or I guess...I'll just have to become a director myself then…and do another reboot...in the meantime, here is my Trailer:

The REAL teaser excited me.

I read the first two paragraphs and gave up. I'm sorry that the trailer didn't excite you. But Bay might be going with a slow build and the next actual teaser trailer might give us more information. Personally I thought it did good at giving us a starting block and it started a conversation between us fans. Which could be seen as a positive thing considering everyone is still wondering who the Transformer was at the end of the trailer. It's Alpha Trion suckers.

I have no clue that's just what I'm guessing.

Um...yeah, that's kind of the point. The trailer isn't supposed to answer anything, it's supposed to ask something, and you have to see the movie to get the answer. "Do you want to know what this thing is? This thing, right here? You do? Then go see the movie." Yeah, that's every movie trailer ever.

Yep, that's the whole movie. Just a Cybertronian ship crashed on the moon. Nothing else will happen in this movie.

Alternate theory: it's the teaser trailer, not the for-real trailer. That one comes later.

Er...yes and no. Sounds like G1 until you mention the AllSpark, and then it sounds like the movies...except they already HAVE a way home, it's just that "home" is a complete crap hole due to the war. So I'm thinking Animated? Though part way through Animated, just like every series, they eventually get the ability to go back to Cybertron any time they feel like it.

Problem: the Harry Potter movies are retelling the story from the books. The Transformers movies are telling an entirely new story. So far, though, each one is fairly standalone, so technically they COULD go for five movies.

No one bothered to look? Sector Seven kept the whole thing classified to the point where even Simmons couldn't get information on it? The ship proved more trouble than it was worth and they kept it in lock down?

That makes sense. There's nothing to prove they have Galaxy-wide sensor equipment, and notice only Megatron ever went for the AllSpark, he probably caught up only because he chased after it immediately after launch. There's also the question of when the ship launched and when it crashed.

I think they're paying homage to the audience who spent a few billion dollars on tickets. Not enough TF fans to make that kind of scratch.

Well, I don't know if I made it as far as Burn or not. But remember a "true fan" just loves Transformers, any incarnation they so please. They could love the movies and hate G1, or love Prime and think Beast Machines was okay. Doesn't matter as long as you enjoy robots into into cars and back to fight each other.

The true key is this: as much as a lot of folks don't want to realize, Mike makes movies. He doesn't necessarily make dreams. Money is what makes the world go round and round and round. No potential for money=no movie made. I suppose Mike could go into one of Paramount's numerous conference rooms and present a movie draft that encompasses everything that "real" TF fans want.....and then Paramount would toss it and go with some chick flick that they already know will make the profit margin they are after. Simple as that.

Shadowman said it right. The movies aren't made for the benefit of the existing TF fanbase. They are made to get millions of people into theatres by way of a ticket purchase. If the charts show that a lump of brownish-green, wet stool smeared all over an interior wall of a big building will entice enough people to pay money to get into said building, then the movie offered will be a real stinker.

Hahahaah, a letter to Bay. Are you serious??? Who do you think you are?
Obviously you're not familiar with anything regarding TF3. The filming has finished recently and they have just released this announcement piece just to put TF3 on the map. Just the people to know that another TF movie is coming. Not everybody knows it (the movies are not only for the fans). There is still a lot of work to be done with the movie before they can release a full trailer with finished special effects (they can't do that several weeks after the movie is wrapped). So relax and don't worry in 2 months you'll get the trailer that you want (Chicago sequences and more). For now this is only to tease us. And by the way although they didn't show much in the teaser it still was awesome. It put a very serious and nice mood to the movie and raised some interesting questions. One of the best teasers (not trailers).

True fan-ism aside, I got more excited by the third movie's trailer than the whole RotF movie.


And look, they paid attention! Your "trailer" isn't available from my country because it contains Sony material.

While i can appreciate your passion for the hobby, you went about it all wrong. First, as far as the trailer goes, it did just what it was supposed to do. Get people (and yes, even "true fans" (more on that later)) talking about the new movie. There are 2 threads, one over 20 pages long discussing the trailer and dissecting it piece by piece. So for you to say that it didn't have enough "awesomeness" is just your opinion and doesn't reflect "true fans" or fans in general.

Having said all that, i find your letter to Bay not only rude, but just down right insulting to the fan base in general. You, and you alone do not represent the fan base in any way, shape or form. Period! I'm half tempted to write bay a letter myself, apologizing for your insults, assuring him that you do not represent what the fan base expects,or wants in a movie.

Bottom line is this.. You want to voice your opinion then fine. But don't for one second, assume your opinion represents the fan base as a whole, or that you are any more a "true fan" than anyone else here. Cause your not. And that, is fact.

When I first read this, I was going to simply point out the problems with the connotation that "true fan" carries (basically, if you don't like what I like, you aren't really interested in this at all), but then I scrolled down and saw...Burn beat me to it.

So then I figured I could dissect the entire post, and point out things I thought were ludicrous assumptions or down right fallacies. But then I scrolled down even further and saw...Shadowman beat me to that as well.

I think, in all honesty, that you're taking yourself and this whole trailer way to seriously, and instead of being level headed about it, you assume that what you want is indeed indicative of the entire community. It's not. Not in the slightest. And that's why fans of all TF series are true fans. They share one common thing: A love and appreciation for TFs. There's no "Check Here for True Fan" box when you become one. We are all fans because we all enjoy the idea behind Robots in Disguise. To use such an expression is not only insulting to those with dissenting views from the idea that G1 is the superior series, it is insulting to any and every fan of TFs, because it makes us look like nothing more than whiny, sniveling, pompous, self-entitled brats.

And unfortunately. Some of us really are.

Side Note: @Shadowman: You're comment on Beast Wars was the single greatest sentence with regards to the series I have ever read. Hyperbole aside, I always enjoy seeing BW given such high praise. It will always be my "G1". I just hope I don't become a "true fan" of Beast Wars...

At my age when it first aired, I enjoyed the humor. I was 7, so it's understandable. Overall though, and since I've watched the show almost 15 years later, I really do appreciate it's depth and writing level. Sure, there were episodes with less, well, intelligent plots, like "The Low Road", but they provided a nice change of pace. Any show that could make 7 year old me feel sad seeing Dinobot die and still make me feel the same seeing it now did everything right when it came to those characters.

Maybe I should have started it off with my forum quote that's from the other discussions in: The Ark in Transformers 3. That's how all of this came about anyway...debating on Spaceships, comets, the Ark, and even Omega Supreme.

Perhaps the next reboot will be about the The Maximals and Predacons! It's not because of Bay. And yes, Mike just makes movies to make money - I'm feaking 35 years old with my own business - it's all money, money, money!!! And that was my point (without saying it). I completely agree (Prime Riblet and Shawdowman) - Paramount is trying to appeal to everyone! I'm just saying, I hope they tie everything together with a coherent storyline, give us some of the best loved Transformers that are popular and well known (don't give us more Skids & Mudflap characters) and don't confuse the heck out of everyone for the final movie of this new reboot. And if my letter was intended to be really serious, I would have sent this letter directly to 'Bay & Company' and certainly wouldn't have posted it here - I just thought we would have some fun. Here's there thing you seem delusional about.

Not every "G1 lover" who was a "kid that grew up in the 80's" has the same opinion as you.

I was a kid who grew up in the 80's.

But as I said, I read a few bits of your original post and you referreced "true" and "real" fans to the point it was insulting.

There are NO "true" or "real" Transformer fans. There are just Transformer fans. Plain and simple. The fact that you feel the need to put yourself into a non-existant class is elitist, and insulting to the generations of kids that came after us and grew up on TF's in their own way.

After all, if you were a "real" Transformers fan, you'd embrace the entire franchise and not be stuck in the 80's.

Just don't forget to point out, that you need to write that you do not represent the fandom as a whole, too. Every opinion is representing parts of the fandom, none of them the whole.

If it weren't for reinventions of the brand, like Beast Wars, or the Unicron Trilogy, or the Live-Action Films, or Animated, there would be no Transformers now. It's the continued evolution of the brand that draws new fans in, and keeps TF alive. Yes, G1 came first and for many it is the definitive Transformers franchise. But Transformers isn't for just one group of fans, no matter what order they became introduced to TFs in. It's something for everyone to take what the like and leave the rest from, and to expect some level of specific catering because of the nostalgia you feel you're entitled to is delusional.

Even your "apology" was only half of what a sincere retraction would be. "for G1 fans only" implies that only G1 fans could get any true enjoyment out of the film, which, as the previous two have proven, is far from the truth. Maybe one day you will become a true fan. And by that I mean someone who has the capacity to detach themselves from their longings to relive their childhood 25 years later and instead appreciates the diversity and broad appeal the brand now has. An appeal it may not have had if it weren't for those franchises that owe their very existent to the almighty G1

Your just not getting it,

Its a teaser trailer. Teaser trailers don't answer any questions, they create them. Think about it... In the first trailer all we got for the first movie was a shadow of a bot tearing apart a mars rover. Remember all the questions people had? Is that an autobot or decepticon? Is there a base on mars etc? The forums were crawling with questions based off that trailer. Ya, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered, but all in due time.
Oh, and i just saw some of your trailer as well. Most of it just being the Autobots driving around. It sure didn't answer any questions as to why the base/ship on the moon hasn't been discused till now. So how is it better than bay's teaser? At least in his we saw something we hadn't seen before.

Your absolutely right. I don't. If it apeared that i did, i apoligize. I'm not really going to write Bay, just got a little heated when i read the OP "letter" to Bay & Co.

This is ridiculous. I find this whole post amusing...because it makes little sense to me. I find this letter immature, and I'm surprised an adult wrote this. Hey, I'm not saying I haven't said immature things, but this thread takes the cake for me.
Here are my points to consider:
1. Look at Burn's posts and you'll get a pretty good reply to your letter.
2. IT'S A SLAGGING TEASER TRAILER. It's supposed to "tease" us. Most movie makers release these things before the main trailers are prepared. They're supposed to make us think and guess and make us want to see more, and that's why not much is shown in them. So you basically want them to just skip to the full-length trailer? Well, with a little thing I call patience, that will happen. This is not the only trailer we will see, and this teaser is not the whole movie.
3. A "true" fan? You say "true fan" a lot on this letter. What is a "true fan"? I believed there were just fans and non-fans; you either enjoy Transformers or you don't. I didn't know there were rankings. But from your context it seems you mean "true" fans are "80's kids" that grew up with G1 when it was current. Well, if this is true, then...I'm a fake fan? Slag my growing up as a 90's kid! Now I can't be a "true" fan, even though I love Transformers AND G1 VERY MUCH. I guess I should just leave and sulk with the other phonies. But in all seriousness, fans are fans. There are no true fans or fake fans. Anyone who comes to enjoy Transformers at any time is a true fan. That's all there is to it.
4. You talk about "G1 fanboys". You seem to speak for everyone who loves G1, stating that all of us G1 fans hate what Bay has done to our beloved friends. Because it's true that all of the "true fans" hate Michael Bay's Transformers movies, since it's a proven fact and all. I love G1 a lot, because it is the root of Transformers. But you know what? I love the movie universe just as much! I love all of Transformers. Oh wait, I forgot, I wasn't an "80's kid" so that means I'm not a real G1 fan because I was born just after G1 was phased out, which also makes me a fake Transformers fan too apparently. But back to you representing all of us as the "fanboys". You and you alone do not represent every single being on this earth that enjoys Transformers. YOU are not the entire fanbase. Not everyone has the exact same opinion as you. And that is why Bay won't submit to this. Because he has his own unique opinions, too. And that's why he does the movieverse a certain way. Which leads me to another point.
5. We don't need more G1. We get classics between every movie now, and I think the majority is content. We don't need retro. How do you build upon something by doing the same thing over again? Transformers does not thrive on taking a step back or planting itself in one place and saying "this is as far as we can go". Transformers thrives on innovation and evolution. You've got to keep it fresh, and that's why the movies attract so many new fans...er...fake fans. If we got the same G1 toys for twenty straight years, where would we be now? Yes, G1 rocks, and it deserves recognition for being the original, but it's not the only thing we can do. Not everything in Transformers has to be G1 all the time. Why can't originality prevail for once? That's what Michael Bay does best. He does the movies HIS WAY, not YOUR way. He envisioned a new world of Transformers, and he made it happen. And he does not care if you don't they don't look exactly like the 80's. Because this is 2010.
6. The 80's kids facilitated Transformers, but Hasbro and Takara and the writers made it the great empire it is today. And everyone who has purchased a Transformers product at any point in the series' history has facilitated it, not just the "superior and true fan" 80's kids. YOU shouldn't be paid homage to by putting G1 in there, either. Bay shouldn't have to pay homage to YOU, because you bought fifty toys or whatever. YOU are no better than anyone that was first introduced to Transformers at a later time. G1 homages shouldn't be homages to you, and not me since I was born after you. MICHAEL BAY OWES YOU OR ANYONE WHO AGREES THAT WE NEED RETRO RETRO RETRO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. He and his talented bunch have no obligation to satisfy your dislikes with their work. 5. Once you've done all the previous 4 tasks, you must burn a Revenge of the Fallen disc, and inhale the smoke of the remains, so you can cleanse the Transformers universe from something unholy.

Yeah, I'm sure Bay and the good folks at Paramount saw your letter and had a redefining moment on the series. Their scrapping a COMPLETE film as we speak and working on bringing your vision to a reality.

Don't speak for the community when the truth of the matter is that we don't even agree with each other as one voice on here or any other forum of discussion. Your rant annoyed me enough to come back from dead on here... I guess I should thank you for that much. But seriously, stop pushing your griefs and issues as our opinons as a whole.

Um, first one i've done, lots (true, most of them are legends class) but the rest, well...

Furmanism i'm still trying to understand.
I'm not religious (But if i'd had to choose, it'd be Primus)
I'm really not sure how can I learn those (I'm not exactly in Detroit and haven't met Prowl yet) pplus, the last one I haven't even heard yet
I can't burn my ROTF DVD; it cost me alot and it's in my Fav. movie list

Wtf seriously? I don't understand why this movie is such an abonination. Every time I watch it I thoroughly enjoy it. Uh oh...does that mean I am an evil fan for enjoying something "unholy"? OH NO!
So basically, enjoying a certain aspect of Transformers is enjoying something evil to Transformers? Crazy.
I shall now go melt down one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite Transformers stories along with the myriad of impure, unholy, and evil toys and the video game that go with it.
