No, that's not true. Only if they "sailed" around in a ship, raiding and robbing other ships. Otherwise, they're no more pirates than any burglar or mugger. It's not the robbing that defines a pirate; it's the method and the lifestyle.

That's exactly what pirates did. They raided other ships for their resources. Contrary to popular movies, pirates weren't seeking fortune; they were mostly seeking food and resources.

If you want to get REALLY technical, historically most pirates weren't pirates at all, they were privateers.

And buccaneers were government employed pirates IIRC.

A Samurai, on the other hand, is a high-ranking military class that served nobility.

If Bludgeon was sailing around space in a ship raiding other ships for resources, he was acting like a pirate, not a samurai.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

I cannot concur. At that point in time, Bludgeon was commander of the Decepticon army (assuming the position after Unicron's defeat), and his actions were strategic in nature. At that rate, Bludgeon's status would preclude him from fitting the given, romantic definition of a samurai, since no one outranks him (perhaps Shogun would be more appropriate?)

Of course, while privateers sailed in service of a nation during war (note that the designation of privateer vs. pirate is somewhat fluid), some pirates became powerful enough to rival nations themselves.

To my mind, Bludgeon doesn't fit either of those archetypes, though. As I recall, the Autobots routed the Decepticon army and scattered it after Bludgeon broke their truce, but no other truce was made - the Decepticons, almost fully under Bludgeon's command, were still formally at war with the Autobots, and began attacking, pillaging, and terrorizing third parties as part of their ongoing war with the Autobots, and overall dedication to conquest (I don't recall Bludgeon getting through a single page without using some derivation of the word "conquer" at least twice). For what it matters, I don't recall him raiding for currency or necessities, I only remember him raiding ships and planets for technology, weapons, and sheer bloody-minded tyrannical sadism.

So, in my opinion, not samurai, not pirate.

But... given his adherence to a brutal warrior ethos, and leadership of a formally-recognized (but nomadic) large military force stealing military resources and terrorizing the locals, I see some parallels to the Mongols.

Side Note - Many have already been mentioned, but I've had some thoughts about molds that might be used for Botcon:
Armada Demolisher (Eye Patch)
Armada Sea Minicon Team (Boats)
Energon Sharkticon (Boat)
Energon Slugslinger (Eye Patch)
Energon Mirage/Dreadwing (Boat)
Cybertron Shortround (Boat)
Cybertron Thunderblast (Boat)
Cybertron Dirtboss (Eye Patch)

Animated/Movie Lockdown (Hook Hand)
Movie Terradive/Space Case (Tridents)

The suggestion that the pirates all need to be animals is interesting, and I'd like to see a mock up of ThunderclashThundertron in Cannonball's colors, though I wonder if this could end up being a case of pirate vs. pirate - Cannonball's crew vs. Thunderclash'sThundertron's crew - instead of our usual Autobot vs. Decepticon?

Unicron Trilogy molds are a no go. As of 2013, the Club isn't using them anymore.

These pirates will more than likely be the Maraudicons rather than the Star Seekers since this is the Wings Universe rather than the Aligned continuity, so no need for beast-based pirates.

Also, why Thunderclash? He's a truck. And an Autobot Elite Guardsman (former, and if he's still alive, that is).

Shucks. I was afraid that might be the case. It's unfortunate, because many of those molds are still good by current standards.

Sabrblade wrote:Also, why Thunderclash? He's a truck. And an Autobot Elite Guardsman (former, and if he's still alive, that is).

Thundertron, I meant Thundertron. #-o

"Thunderclash" is always what pops into my head when I think of the pirate captain because it comes with this mental image of a grand sword fight on the deck of a boarded ship in the midst of a fearsome squall.

Probably doesn't help that the actual name "Thundertron" sounds like the fanfic love child of Thundercracker and Megatron, and the actual character "Thunderclash" simply holds no significance in my mind.

Decides to revive this thread a bit given the revelation of the theme: Pirates vs. Knights!

And Cannonball will be the first reveal. This will be fun to guess, but I'm staying with either Prime Ratchet, Beast Hunters Ratchet or Arms Micron Breakdown (with the intended weapon). Given that Star Seekers have Beast Modes in-fiction, any Predacon or Beast Hunters mold is fair game for the Pirates, despite their recent use. Anyway, I'm calling either of these molds to be used:

- Sharkticon Megatron
- Beast Hunters Knock Out (aka Crock-Out)
- Beast Hunters Ratchet
- Arms Micron Breakdown (with Cylas head)

Let the guessing begin once more!

Hmm... How would Dai Atlas's color scheme look on Simplified-Voyager Prime Predaking?

Edit: Also, I'll guess FoC Grimlock will be one of the Knights, given his sword and shield.

Generations Thrilling 30 Springer = Knight of Cybertron Rodimus?

Curious... is there anything explicitly saying the exclusives can't include Constructbots?

They might be too new to use.

And I wouldn't imagine that they'd be that popular as full BotCon figures seeing how divisively received they currently are.

But he's a bat.

Hence "parrot" in parentheses. >:oP Then again, Gul or Baru would be better choices.

Or Thundertron's foot.

Motto: "The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance."
Another question: should we limit ourselves to Animated, Prime and Generations molds exclusively? Some Beast Wars molds can also be used, as Ultra Mammoth and Thrustinator have shown. If anything, Transmetals 1 and 2 would be perfect.
The resident Rewind... well, half of one
