Im a bit rusty as i havnt drawn anything in a while thanks to mental health issues, so dont expect me to be able to churn these out daily when we get started.

Like i told sylus id be more suited to the larger projects, like cover art and large set piece images, that way i can take time on them and not ruin everyone elses drawing schedule.

I like the cover idea, I think that covers would suit your style perfectly :D

We'll probably have you do Covers, landscapes and backgrounds, that is if you're ok with it.

Covers are fine, not too fond of just doing backgrounds though, unless it contains some characters in the foreground.

While everone is discussing roles etc...i think i would be best suit for penciling, i shagging hate colour and i am fast....really really fast.So i could churn out an entire book in sketch form quicker than anything, then people who like taking their time and doing neater drawing/colouring could tidy up afterwards. Maybe?

I posted these else where but here they are again, i drew magatron during a lecture on feminism in Art and then gave it a lash with ink, all in all we are talking less than an hour for that pic,
clocker took between 2 and 10 mins-i wasnt counting, or rushing, i was just admiring the toy.

This is my first ever drawing of a transformer of any kind so please forgive any crude anatomical or proportional mistakes i have made.

hmmmmmmmmm...I think u would be best used as an inker-u gave it loads of attention to the little details, and u said u like working in bursts......so if someone else did a sketch, u could then clean it up, black line it,and fill in all those lovely mechanical details on any open areas.

With speed and quality like that you would be best suited to pencils.

But i think we should stop discussing roles so much and just focus on what we are best at.

Personally, and i know i havnt shown it here as i have nothing to show thanks to various re-installs of my operating system, but id be best suited to complicated pics that require lots of time and patience and detail. I cant churn out stuff in minutes and get good quality, but i can spend a few days on something and blow you away with the level of detail and action and movement i can put into a pic.

I dont wanan sound egotistical or anything, since in reality i have the lowest opinion of myself then anyone but im just pointing out what sort of work i am more suited, and more comfortable with.

Like, while everyone is spending time making two or three pages of story-driven comic art a day, i could be working on a centerpiece 2 page poster, or a cover, or a large set-piece action sequence that requires lots of detail and realism which does take time. We should all work on what we are best at, and what we are most comfortable with. This should afterall be about fun, it shouldnt feel like a job.

See what im saying?

Optimus Prime WIP

Postby Sonray » Sun May 13, 2007 6:04 pm

WIP stands for Work In Progress BTW, ive noticed someone didnt know what it ment so i thought id clear it up just in case. :P

Anyway heres a pic ive been working on for the past couple of hours just because im bored and i wanted to.

Its nowhere near complete yet, as i still have alot of detail to add to Prime as well as an explosive background but it is alot of fun to be drawing Prime finally so i think im gonna take my time with this one.

Hope you like this taster for now though. Lemme know what you think please?

gotta say i think it is very good, although i find it had to imagine working on a line drawing for hours!

I have made sculptures adn paintings which i have spent days even weeks on, but a line drawing? I personnal cant imagine it. What do u find takes the most time? Do u redo areas often, and do u draw out a "skeleton" of the drawing first and then draw over it?

p.s. where is primes arm pit!!! That is a great area for adding mehanical detail and i dont see any pipes or pistons! tut tut :P

I sometimes draw a skeleton for the mroe complex poses but usually i dont, liek this pic i didnt bother with one.

Erm, i guess im just slow really, i like to take my time since when i rush things they come out looking like crap IMO. Why waste and hour and come out with something looking lke crap when you can just spend another hour or so and get a much better result?

Just the way i do things i suppose, hence why i think larger scale projects like covers and centrepieces would be better for me.

I sometimes re-do areas but mainly because i keep adding detail to them, and perfecting their look making sure everything looks as perfect as i can get it. Im a bit anal when it comes to those things.

As for the armpit, that was funnily enough the next thing i was gonna work on anyway, but my hand started hurting so i decided to call it a night and thats where i left off. :P

Dont worry, his armpit will be full of mechanical goodies soon!

I ran out of bloody space on the page though so i cant get all of his Ion Blaster in there, since i need the room for the explosion and his trailer in the background, as well as maybe a few decepticons that he just ran over and are now flying through the air injured. I think you should be able to guess what scene i am trying to recreate by now? :P

Cut their hands off? Wow i wouldnt like to eb your student....sheesh. :P

I dunno..i just work better without guidelines most of the time. I sometimes do my best work when i make things up on the fly, i dont like being restricted by a guideline maybe?

Thanks for the compliment too btw

I have heard that reason before and after a couple of quick slaps my students have ll agreed that a guide line helps, in ur pick primes got a ghost finger-if u had drawn it out first that could have been avoided :P

ghost finger?

OOh that....thats just an eraser line. A guideline wouldnt have changed that since the end result is a correction of the "ghost" finger you mentioned.

Making mistakes and correcting them is how we learn afterall...at least in my eyes it is.

Again that just proves my point! If u draw a guide in pencil first, then u can knock out the second drawing in pen and ta-da no ilttle eraser lines, because u didnt have to erase!

A light pencil will rub out without leaving marks, or a nonphotographic blue or red will eliminate the need for rubbing out at all!

In the drawing hereu can see the guideline version and the finished pen drawing, although i havent rubbed out any pencil yet-that oughta give ya an idea of the use it can be-particuylarly in anything with spheres, checkout the knobs on his chest!
