He-Man, She-Ra and The Masters of The Universe - TV Shows Thread

A while ago, in the MOTU Toy Thread, someone mentioned to me there was one for the shows (Being possibly the biggest/only NA fan on the Forum). I can't now remember who that was or when it was said (I spent the last hour trying to find it). But when I eventually searched the boards, I couldn't find anything beyond a Revelations thread that went way off-topic. From earlier in the year. So here we go:

Image

Sound off!

For my own history, New Adventures was "my" He-Man. I was a child of the 90's. One that loves both robots (obviously) and space faring narrative. In spite of having a few toys, my memory/exposure to the Filmation years was vague. About ten years ago, I did watch some of the boxset through with an Ex. To me, with no nostalgia goggles attached, it's largely unwatchable. Like the 60's Marvel cartoons. But some of them did have a certain charm to them. I imagine it didn't help that I watched and liked 200X beforehand. So I just saw Filmation as the inferior prototype to that. But New Adventures ticked more boxes for me than any other MOTU show to date. It makes me a considerable outlier to the fanbase, I'm sure. But I'm happy with that.

To date however, I haven't seen any show since 200X.

I saw maybe one or two of episodes of one of the older series as a kid when we would be staying at a hotel somewhere on vacation, but it never was broadcast where I lived until Cartoon Network aired the 2002 reboot. (Honestly, there's a lot of stuff that didn't come on where I lived with the cable package we got as a kid :-? ) Which I honesty really enjoyed. But it was the only entry in the franchise I watched with any regularity.

I was not yet 12 when the toys were released in 82 and I bought as many as I could. When the toon debuted in 83 I would record every day just in case I didn't get home from school in time to watch it. Most of my Christmas presents this year from my wife and daughters are Gi.Joe or MOTU related. I feel like a kid again..

MOTU, Gi Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, M.a.s.k all came on the UHF channels in my area for the afternoon cartoon TV block from 3-5pm.
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
No, I am not friendly online or in real life.
I look forward to attending a Botcon only to settle matters with idiots in person.

Leonardo Wields the Power of Grayskull in Scrapped TMNT/He-Man Crossover Art
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were on the verge of crossing over with the Masters of the Universe in 2020, and thanks to artist Freddie E. Williams II, behind-the-scenes design sketches for the project are viewable -- including one showing Leonardo swapping out his trademark katana for two Power Swords.

Image

Williams posted the pencil study on Twitter, linking it to a sketchbook currently for sale on his website dubbed He-Man/TMNT: The Crossover That Almost Was. The sketchbook contains Williams' designs that were largely done in 2019 while the book was still in the planning stages. Originally intended as a joint production between DC Comics and IDW Publishing, the crossover was delayed twice before it was finally cancelled.
Williams has shared other sketches from the ill-fated project on social media in the past, including images of the TMNT striking dynamic poses alongside He-Man, Shredder and Skeletor standing side by side, and Raphael riding Battle Cat. Williams' earliest posts date back to 2021, about a year after the project was canned.

"All those decisions were made above my pay grade," Williams wrote in a 2021 Facebook comment when asked why the crossover was shelved. "I’m sure someone somewhere had good reasons; I just don’t know those reasons. It’s a shame. "While the Turtles' adventures alongside He-Man never manifested, Williams has pencilled a wide variety of other crossovers for both the TMNT and the Masters of the Universe. Starting in 2015, Williams illustrated three Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and in 2016, he also lent his pencils to the He-Man/Thundercats crossover. In 2018, Williams mashed up He-Man and his comrades with DC's finest once again for the Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe crossover.

Aside from his work on popular '80s properties, Williams' most recent work is Godzilla vs. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The 2022 series continues his proud mashup tradition, this time with the world's most famous kaiju and arguably the biggest action show of the '90s.

The MOTU timeline?

I'm mostly basing this off bits I know from NA, 200X and a little Filmation. I'm trying to see the overall narrative of He-Man. Based on the "big bad" at the time. Given all the shows to date have been cancelled at various points, it's not all that easy to get a clear picture.

Skeletor>Hordak>King Hiss/Snakemen ------>Space Mutants?

I'm guessing Hordak and King Hiss were in interchangeable slots for Filmation. Due to the former chiefly being a She-Ra villain. But otherwise I think this timeline is correct???

Is anyone watching the CGI Netflix He-man?
I'm enjoying it it a lot. It does a good job making it's own story , while still respecting the idea of He-man.

Breaking away from the shows for a question!

Off the back of the clearly successful TMNT: Shredder's Revenge video game. This was announced. Personally: thrilled!

But, in the comments of one trailer post. Paraphrasing but, a somewhat disgruntled fan, posed the following question:
"Why does c :KREMZEEK: p like this get a game and MOTU doesn't?"

They brings up a good, albeit uninformed, point. Why are MOTU games so few and far between?? The last one was 11 years ago, according to google.

An interesting little bit of lore. I gotta admit, I prefer it to the Filmation series.

Keith David to Voice Hordak in Masters of the Universe: Revolution

Image

Deadline reports that at SDCC, Smith revealed during a panel that Keith David has been cast as the voice of Hordak in the animated Netflix series. In the previous season of the Masters of the Universe sequel series, dubbed Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Hordak was briefly shown, though the character's voice wasn't yet revealed. With his casting, David joins Meg Foster, who previously starred as Evil-Lyn in the live-action Masters of the Universe film in 1987; she voices Motherboard in the new series. Other confirmed voice cast members include Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Chris Wood as He-Man, Melissa Benoist as Teela, and William Shatner in a mystery role.

I grew up on old he-man in the 1980s, the toys, but tdidn'ty have many toys myself, barely any apart from my beloved Trapdoor. It was mostly heighbouring kids that were younger that had tonnes of figures.

Couldn't stand the 90's version, but haven't seen it since so not sure what I'd make of the "He-man in space" nowadays with a fresh set of eyes. Loved the 2XXX version that added all the lore in the show more that got axed after one series, am watching it again or am meaning to as it's on Amazon prime video

There was also this really weird sci-fi power-rangers esq version on Netflix I got into but only got as far as two seasons and forgot to continue watching it. (Nothing to do with Kevin Smith Also.) It was really different and kept to the idea but took it in a really different direction - and I was kind of down for it. Need to pick it back up though!

I must admit I still haven't seen a single episode of Revelations. As noted in the Earthspark thread, I begrudge having to get a streaming service for a single show. Things were so much easier to keep track of on a TV channel...

I've just watched the new revolutions series and while it takes a very different turn on the story, it respects a lot of the groundwork, throwing in some references to various toys. It is certainly an interesting watch, knowing all the characters and backstory feeling very much like this was intended to be the story the grown ups wanted without all the cheese in it.

Just a shame all the license rights are messed up in the same way Marvel is, so that She-Ra is difficult to be shoehorned in.
