Like Britney Spears, I'm thinking of shaving my head. Any advice?

Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

Like Britney Spears, I'm thinking of shaving my head. Any advice?

Postby Baseball Tonight » Mon Mar 26, 2007 4:28 pm

But unlike Britney, this isn't shaving my head by choice. Other factors are influencing me, mostly the fact that I've reached an unfortunate situation where my hairs are falling out of my head faster than they are growing.

Yes, this sucks, but being pissed about it won't help at all.

Anyway, I just got so tired of stressing about my hair that I figure maybe I should just shave my head and I would feel better and not have to worry about my hair. Or maybe not.

I've never shaved my head before, or gotten a hair cut close to that (at least none that I can remember).

So if any of you have shaved your head before, or know anyone who has, do you have any advice? Anything I should know about?

I went from having a lot of hair..like long and thick as hell, and then i decided to mimic some of my metal heroes and got the "shaved under" hair style. In that you shave the sides and back of your head.

It was a shock the first time I walked outside.

My head nearly froze haha

Have some fun first. I've been trying to get my brother to get a permed mohawk mullet. He won't for some unknown reason. I say you do it and take some pics for us.
You could start a new trend.

Are you going for a swimmer shave or a shiny Kojack? The difference between them is whether or not you use a good quality razor after you buzz your hair down with a cutter.
Don't forget to put a strong sunscreen on your scalp before you go out. It's pale and vulnerable to the sun after being hidden under hair for so long. And you do NOT want to get a burn and start scalp peeling, as that's just nasty looking.

Do you want some slight fuzz or do you want to Bic the thing entirely?

There's plenty of good electrics for under $30 that come with all sorts of guards. I recommend keeping your razor highly oiled and clean, and using the shortest guard possible to get the peach fuzz thing going on. Just be sure to use a couple of mirrors to ensure that the cut is even, and it'll take you several tries until you're used to it.

Then coat your head in shaving cream and grab the Norelco, or, if you're bold, a plastic .97-cent Bic.

I'm now growing my hair back out. I got stopped on the street the other day, asked how long ago I had gotten out of high school, and if I had enlisted in the military. Short hair makes me look a lot younger than I really am.

i did mine about 6 months ago, it was really long and getting to be more hassle than it was worth. mostly did it on an urge, just trimmed my beard and decided it would be a good thing. scared the daylights out of my flatmate though, all i got out of him for 5 mins was various shocked expletives.

im growing it back abit now, nothing near what it was but enougth to do something with it and yes your head will be cold, very cold.

I've been bald before, and usually stick with the short haircuts. The best part for me is allowing my scalp to breathe. When I let it grow, it tends to itch a lot, so I stick with the short hair.

The only downside with shaving it all off is that it's too high maintenance for my taste. I'm lazy that way. Heck, I SHOULD shave my beard every other day, and I still let it grow for a week before I do anything about it.

A friend of mine in high school had really long hair that covered his face, one day he cut it and nobody recognised him at first.

One Halloween we all chipped in and paid a buddy of mine to do it. We took his word about certain areas, but he did all of it, that I know of.

He looked like a different person. It was uncanny. He got a new speaker system with the $100+ he made.

And be forwarned. Shaving something for the first time, is itchy as hell. I've never shaved my head, but I've shaved other places. We'll leave it at that. :-P The sheer amount of itching is horrible, so watch it.

I'll back that up...

On a side note, trimming down to a half inch instead actually works well if you just want the clean feeling. And so DR freaks out yet another thread into destruction...hehehe...

Well, what skin color are you and what shape is your head.

I've done the shaving of the head before, but I was able to pull it off cause, and this is quite true, most white guys have silly shaped heads, and most will look like a man from the distant future or one of those grey aliens, fortunately, I got a more Kurt Angle shaped head myself and it was fine.

Word of advice, after shaving the head brace yourself if you use aftershave, my heart literally stopped for 10 seconds after I applied aftershave.

And dude, if your hair is falling out, consider a hair transplant surgery, just becareful with the surgeon, since most of just schisters and buthers.

I've been shaving my head for years and it's not that difficult, just need a bit of confidence the first time.
Only thing I'd say is if yr going the whole hog and taking a bic orange to yr scalp then when you cut yrself it will bleed alot, scalps are a very vascular area. Also watch the spots around yr ears, easy to slice above yr ears and easy to miss shaving behind yr ears and towards yr neck altogether...
When yr done, don't use aftershave, slap some day cream or a mosturiser on there, will help stop yr bonce looking scaly

Cheers,
Doug

Back N da Day (BND) I used to have a Sk8r Cut. Shaved sides and back and would flip the longs bangs from side to side. But that was when I was in my teens and could pull that kind of crap off. Yeah, like everyone said, watch out for the areas behind your ears and on the back of your neck. Also, head wounds bleed profusely!

Currently, I have a FauxHawk. It's a Mohwak but with a little hair left on my cranium. The sides are down to a #2, the top is about two inches.

My wife calls me "The last of the Drewhicans".

I have a lumpy head, BND, I used to race BMX bikes, on the track you had to wear a helmet, but I was "Too Cool" to wear one during practice and I have quite a few scars. So I can't pull off shaving it to the skin.

Most importantly, know where your moles are. I really sux and friggin' hurts to cut into a mole!

Yeah, I've considered this and other options, did research, talked to my doctor, etc...

The downside to hair transplant surgery is that it can cost thousands and most will have to come in for 2 or more follow-up surgeries later on in life to keep up appearances.

Well, I myself would find it worth it, should my own hair start to fall out. I'd rather spend a few thousand bucks on something that can last forever and only do one or two more maintence trips, instead of spending on pills or wigs that would cost the same ( and have less results ) in the long run over the time of one's life.

Several of my friends have the same disappearing hair act going on so they just shave their heads. I think it's a pretty damn cool look personally. I've always said that if I started to bald, I would shave my head as well instead of looking like an old man. No one questions someone's age if their head is shaved bald.

The biggest trick I think would be to shave your head on a regular basis. I wonder if you could get it waxed instead of shaving. Of course, that seems like that'd hurt a lot as well.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks Ryan! I haven't decided exactly what to do yet, but if I do go the shaved head route, this thread has made me more comfortable with that idea.

Emperor Primacron the 1st, I'd strongly consider doing the hair transplant thing, if I had a couple of thousand bucks lying around. If you have a couple of grand burning a hole in your pocket, then hook a brother up!

Also, I heard you can get financial aid too, plus you can pay in installments. I saved some dough aside, just for an occasin. Also, they are planning on hair cloning, something akin to stem cells to grow more hair from you to have more donor hair, and it outta be out in a few years, so it might better than traditional transplantation.

And dude, listen to the radio show "The Bald Truth" the host is like the ralph nader of hair loss treatments. Plus I think you might save more hair with propecia. Cause I see people spend a fortune on smokes, booze and loose women.....spend the cash on something you can use.

I might shave my head for summer since the heat does havoc to my hair alot, BUT I might just leave a long, braided lock on the head, like the ancient chinese and eygptions did. What ya think of that style? :-?

Or dude, you could get a double mohawk like the late road warrior hawk

Well, I don't know how finacial aid you can get, but yeah, you can pay in installments, which sort of depends on your credit and employment level.

But if it truly comes down to hair transplant surgery then I'm sure I can come up with the payment, one way or another.

Yeah, propecia and rogaine are two options that I've thought about.

I don't spend money on booze or smokes (not a smoker and don't really drink alcohol that much), but I plead the fifth on loose women.
