X-Men '97 - Episode 1 & 2
Weirdly enough, no "previously on X-Men" series recap for episode one? Seems like a bit of a nostalgia oversight. Also tweaks to the theme song. I will add here something was odd with the sound mixing? It wasn't crisp or clear. Also they didn't use the original power sound effects!? Magneto and Cyclops powers had a very distinct sound and now just.. don't?
Every trailer you may have seen so far ( I didn't post the last three or four teasers here). Thankfully, 95% are bits from the first episode. Which is good. Keeps some surprises for episode two.
Voices, are a mixed bag. Cyclops (new voice in lieu of the deceased Norm Spencer) is good. Storm, Wolverine, Beast and Rogue all perfectly reprised roles, to my ear. Gambit and Morph are ..fine. Bishop and Jubilee are not. Also, while not the original voice for Jean. Jennifer Hale has been her in enough video games that I didn't find the change jarring. Speaking of jarring, the animation. It's really good in motion and at a distance. But there are several talking heads moments with up close faces and the thick black outlines look really odd. The faces similarly are weirdly rigid for these close ups too.
Story. One of the things I liked about TAS was that it wasn't beholden to any continuity but it's own. This continues here. We have a big portrait of the Original Five X-Men (which is still a weird continuity blip, ifkyk) and an emphasis on past relationships that are not elaborated on.
Episode 1 & 2 I'd give 7/10 each. The truncated storyline of episode 2 was a bit of a let down. But it's the two potential bits of source material that end episode two. That, I am intrigued to see what they do with it.
