Mattel Creations - Jurassic World the Gates Crowdfund

Mattel Creations is doing a Jurassic Park Crowdfunder if any are interested. Unfortunately, it's not going so great (6 days left and only 28% funded), but I hope it can reach its full goal. Here's the link. I really want the Buck Rex, and if the goal doesn't get met entirely I hope they will do a separate release for it down the road.

Of course, I'm afraid that if any of the goals aren't met/it's not backed, it's going to make Mattel think twice about creating anything more for collectors in the future of Jurassic Toys. The gate's got a lot of effort put into it in terms of engineering that I like, three different sound light modes, motorized doors with an override for posing, plus the Explorer has rubber tires (we all know how rare that stuff is!) so it will be a shame not to get any of it. The crowdfunding for this has already missed the early funding goal (Paddock signs), but maybe if it gains enough steam Mattel will reconsider that. Mattel seems willing to work with the fandom and respond to requests about the set and the levels themselves.

If you know anyone that is a Jurassic fan, you are a Jurassic fan, anyone that cares about the series or collector minded, and/or is capable of funding this, please pass the link around and let people know about it. Thanks!

Yeesh....

I understand why no one care. It's just a freaking DOOR. A 500$US door. That's ridiculous. Even if you include all the unlockables from the get-go, I'm not sure it would do better.

This may be the dumbest crowdfunding project after the HASLAB Reva's Lightsaber.

Mattel really has a lot of trouble with their crowdfunds. Eternia had a little bit of a struggle but it did fairly well, but since then it's been pretty rough.

Eternia was a given for a crowdfunding project. But this? Mattel should do better research about what the public really want.

They probably went with the Gates primarily because of them being so iconic primarily. It may not have been the best choice as many have said. I personally disagree, I feel like the gates are massively cool and I feel like they're worth it because of the motor and engineering involved in it, the problem is I think they're too sophisticated. They should've gone with like a Visitor Center or "Command Compound" update from the Kenner line or even the trailers from The Lost World with characters like Eddie, Nick, and Kelly along with the Buck.

I do think they should've offered these in price-based tiers instead of backer-based tiers, with the top price tier offering everything - including the bonus they had. Outside of that, I do have concerns that the money people at Mattel will see this as evidence the brand is "unprofitable" and they force Mattel in cancelling the toy line or at least force the team working on it to start pairing down. From what it sounded like though from the Mattel panel at SDCC is that the design team is still going to go ahead and do more to either court or bring in more collectors for the series with additional offerings. Sort of a "If it's there, we're going to entice, if it isn't we're going to build it!" type of thought. So the future isn't as dark as I had thought, but it does become a bit harder. I do hope they offer the Hammond Collection Buck T-Rex outside of this set as an individual release in the future though. It'd probably not have the scars sculpted into it, but then it could still too. The Buck Rex from the 2nd film is my favorite dinosaur character of the series.

Oh, no doubt, but this is their third crowd fund, the one after Eternia was a light up WCW stage and some $20 figures for $400, it only got to 78% funded. I put it in the same category as the JP gate, it isn't a playset like Eternia, it's a backdrop and nothing else.

The reason they can't do tiers like that is MOQ, minimum order quantity. If they did it like you described then what happens if 5K people go for the lowest tier but only 100 go for the highest, they'd lose money producing tooling just for 100 people. Initial goals are always the minimum number needed to put everything into production, the stretch goals are spaced by what it would cost to add them to the production. For example Hasbro often goes with 10K to produce the initial piece and 3K for each additional figure rather than another 10K because the more they make of the initial item the less it costs them to make so it helps partially absorb the cost of the add on. For Mattel they still need that 5K regardless of what they include because those massive gates are the bulk of the cost, everything else is just added value. Personally, I think the gates are probably priced right for what they need to produce them, but that doesn't mean it has any real value to fans as something they'd want.

I wouldn't be too worried about Mattel looking at the campaign as a measure of the line's popularity, they have a whole franchise worth of data for that and they definitely understand that those gates would only be bought by adults when the majority of the toys are bought for kids.

The JP gates should be just a carboard construct included in the packaging of a JP toy line. Buy like 5 playsets then combine the extra cardboard included to make the gates. This would be inexpensive and give a chance to kids to have a nice BACKDROP for they JP play time.

Thanks for explaining that and laying it out for me. I definitely understand how manufacturing works a little better now than I did before. I've been looking at the engineering and features of the Gates being in-line with the asking price. It had motors in it and some premium styling, as well 4 different media modes, and could be plugged in. Pretty sophisticated for a toy or a collector piece at the very least. A scaled-down version might be better that is mostly hollow, and you could build - hopefully maybe down the line.

My concern is the franchise itself had a horrendous dead period between Jurassic Park ///'s theatrical release and Jurassic World's theatrical release. It was a period of bad comics, bad toys, and generally people saying it wasn't a money maker because they didn't put effort into anything regarding the brand. I don't want to see the Jurassic series in a state like that again, especially since Mattel has been producing high-quality stuff for the fandom since getting the license in 2016 after Hasbro screwed up with the 2015 movie's toy line of "cheap, dollar store level trash" as many put it. With the crowdfund failing though I have heard rumors from people in the know that the only reason the Male T-Rex from the second movie was included was because Mattel thought it wouldn't sell, which is a reminder of the past for me with people not wanting to try with this brand. So I have since created a petition to get that Hammond Collection Buck T-Rex produced as advertised either as a Mattel Creations exclusive (or some other retailer) and I am trying to show the animal (as a character) is exceedingly popular in the fandom (as it is.) Here's the link: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/rel ... -hc-figure

Already on the first day, it has 122 signatures as of this posting. It may not get the figure released, but I'm hoping with at least 5k signing it shows Mattel that the animal is more than viable and they were just aiming too high with the Gate for the first crowd funder or at least include a dinosaur in the base set to get more people to get in on it.
