i haven't got him on hand currently, but my guess is it's a button cell either in his backpack or in the grey block that holds the matrix

the only transformers i have here is a box of BW toys including optimal optimus
on the rear part of his cannon assembly is a block with the word 'open' on it, right behind the hole where his head goes.
i think if you removed that small screw and slide the block rearwards, you'll find the batteries.
the block is attached to the upper cover plate on top of the rear cannon part.
judging by the size, it's 2 AAA's.
