In Cloverfield, that's fine because the film isn't really about the monster. Now imagine that the film was a Godzilla movie. You'd be pretty hacked off to pay to see Godzilla, and instead see a load of people running around.

First-Aid wrote:Dude...

Get over it. Just because the movie wasn't what YOU wanted doesn't mean you have to inflict others with your opinion. Bay, Spielberg, and Dreamworks have 1.5 BILLION statements (dollars) that say the movie was entertaining.
Are you seriously saying that because a movie makes money it must be good? The two Matrix sequels beg to differ with you. And it's not just that the movie wasn't what HE wanted, it's that it wasn't what a lot of people wanted, ie: a film that was about the Transformers we grew up with.

You would think that here, 8 months later, people would have quit crying about the fact that a movie they didn't think should succeed was a total and utter success in so many different ways it's sad. It is NOT G1. Armada was not G1. Beast Wars was not G1. There will NEVER be G1 again...the Universe line is the perfect example of this. Now you're thinking, "what the heck?" G1 toys would not work today. Toys that sort of look like G1 toys DO work. It's a completely different animal today than 25 years ago. We look back at G1 as the greatest because it was a treasured part of our youth. but it is in the past and will never be again. We can hope, yes, but it's not gonna happen. Please just move on...

What? What do G1 toys have to do with this? I can't see what that has to do with the issue at hand: that the Bay film was crap, and that G1-style character models could easily have been used. Preferably along with better writers and director.

If you honestly think the Movie was good, then... I was going to say "good for you," but it's not. It speaks of such a lack of taste and discernment in film that you really shouldn't offer opinions on them.

Congratulations. You basically just called everyone who enjoyed the movie idiots. In a similar mode of communication to yours i convey a similar message, go bite yourself. You have no right to tell me that I was wrong about enjoying the movie, and criticize others who think that way as well....simply because it wasn't what you wanted. I'm in pediatric nursing and that attitude sounds a lot like the attitude of some of my younger patients...(ME ME ME ME ME! WHAAAAAAAAA!)

You really cannot with any relatively factual support that the movie wasn't what a lot of people wanted. What you COULD say, with confidence, is that the film was not what roughly 10-20,000 fanboys wanted. Most of the people didn't care about what the movie was about; they just wanted to be entertained and see giant f---ing robots. To them, it was a "cool" movie...it was enjoyable, funny in parts, corny in others, exciting to many; looking back at G1 cartoons that's exactly what they were too. If you want to argue, provide some support to your arguments. Otherwise your arguments don't hold a lot of water to most people.

Meh, the movie was pretty bad, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Like Batman Forever wasn't the perfect Batman, but I enjoyed it at the time, and eventually they started over again.

I did appreciate that the movie didn't have many of the weaknesses of other Michael Bay films. It seemed to have something of a Spielberg touch. I also appreciate that the film didn't make some of the many mistakes they could've made, and pulled off some elements better than expected.

But come on, it was pretty lame. Exactly how does looking at a frozen Megatron get the location of the allspark etched on a pair of glasses? How does that work? The movie glosses over so many things like that, that I don't see how any rational person person couldn't at least be aware that it was essentially a dumb movie. An enjoyable movie, yes, but clearly as dumb as they come.

My hope for the movie 'franchise', is that they get maybe a nice trilogy or so of films, with a nice round arc, building on what they did with the first, and going on to stuff like dinobots vs constructicons, and ultimately culminating with something even more epic involving Unicron and the death/rebirth of Optimus. And then the leave it at that. And then a few years later they hire Simon Furman and give us the G1 wet dream of a movie.

Eh, Batman Forever was bad, the only thing that is worth watching in Batman Forever is Jim Carrey as the Riddler. But Transformers I don't feel was lame at all, I thought the movie was actually pretty good, in the fact that it is the cornerstone for a new TF continuity, rather than just taking the old G1 continuity and transforming it <-(ah, pun) into a live action film. I just honestly don't think it would work. But the new movie was reinventing the frnachise for an entirely new fanbase, while the old fanbase could have something to connect to. Now, I'm not an original G1 Fan, I'm 22 so, that's a big clue that the series and the original toys were way before my time, but I did grow up during Generation 2 and Beast Wars, which I thought were excellent, but that's why I feel that I am a little more receptive to the movie than most others, not that I am saying everyone on this site is a G1 purist, I'm trying to say that G1 needs to be left in the 80's. And it breaks my hear to say this about the G1 cartoon, but, I'll be honest, that show has not aged well, I used to watch the reruns back in the 90's, and I thought it was the greatest cartoon ever, I never missed an episode. I watch the old episodes now on Youtube, and you realize just how hammy and cheesey the cartoon's story was. But hey, it was fun at the time, and the movie is fun now, I really hope I don't get crucified for this, but if that is what fate has in store for me, then so be it. Anyways, the CGI G1 Prime/Megs fight is a bad ass video IMHO. As for the story of The TF movie, Bay does want to make two more sequels for a nice, rounded arc, but I want Spielberg to step in and be more creatively involved, the 'bots and 'cons had a severe lack of character development.

P.S. To any hardcore G1 Fans, if I offended you with my opinion, I sincerely apologize, I was only trying to make a point.

P.P.S. I am also sorry if my opinion "ruined" your childhood.

That was cool, but I see it as further proof that the Movie bots fit CGI better than G1.

But that's my personal preference, to each their own.

You seriously don't think the movie was in the slightest bit lame? Bumblebee pisses on someone!! Remember all those stupid scenes with the 'hackers'?! How about that soldier guy and his brilliant plan about hiding the cube in the city? I don't deny that they got some things right, but it was clearly far from stellar. But my point is - so what? It doesn't have to be the be all and end all of Transformers.

When I say G1 movie, my meaning isn't going to be exactly the same as what the next G1 fan thinks. I don't think anyone would want something 100% faithful. But they could be respectful. They could keep the stuff that works.

I believe according to the novel, Megatron sensed Archibald Witwicky and burned the map on the classes and sent out a signal to the other Decepticons with the last bit of energy he could muster.

OK...I will counter with: a human's "mind" transferred into a robot body; an alien planet brought into Earth orbit without ripping BOTH planets; a human-made ninja robot; Constructicons being built on earth but existing on Cybertron. Looking back, G1 was kinda lame and cheesy too. Not that it isn't nostalgic fun...

Bumblethumper wrote:But my point is - so what? It doesn't have to be the be all and end all of Transformers.

Agreed...Transformers is an ongoing franchise- changing every few years to accomodate the tastes of the current target audience. The movie seems to have hit the target audience (ages 6-13) hard, fast, and continuously. I see a LOT more kids shopping the TF aisle now than I did before.

Bumblethumper wrote:When I say G1 movie, my meaning isn't going to be exactly the same as what the next G1 fan thinks. I don't think anyone would want something 100% faithful. But they could be respectful. They could keep the stuff that works.

The sales numbers for G1 in the US dropped almost 70% by the middle of the G1 line in 1987, leading to the eventual reinvention as G2...As much as we all (including myself...I have over 200 G1 toys still today) enjoyed G1, it was time to move on. Transformers evolved...some people don't like it, but we have no choice. The tastes of kids have changed over the years...the movie was a new imagining; TF:A is a new imagining. Time and tech changes all things. But the one thing to remember is that, by 1987, G1 didn't work for the majority anymore. however, they DID keep some stuff that works. Cybertron. Autobots vs. Decepticons. Megatron vs. Optimus Prime. Robots in Disguise. Giant F---ing robots.
