Original vs. Platinum Edition Predaking

Postby euphoricallydead » Tue Oct 29, 2013 8:16 am

Would you rather have an Original Predaking or a Platinum Edition Predaking?

Do you think the Platinum Edition Predaking depreciate the value of the original?

Regards.

Does the Platinum Edition have die cast? I have the original with all die cast except Headstrong and Divebomb.

Headstrong actually works better in all plastic, because the metal back makes the robot mode tend to fall over :)

You don't own one right?

Anyway, to the OP, if financial value is the reason for collecting, I think you will be in for disappointment. It's the collecting that makes it fun.

I certainly agree fun is the reason to collect. I just enjoy official first releases more. I just thought maybe the release of Platinum Edition Predaking would drive the original's price of $800 down to something more reasonable. Collecting G1 is getting ridiculous. Even buying parts for some of my original Transformers is crazy.

Will give you some tips. The originals and re-issues (of Predaking) always go up. I really don't understand his "charisma". I own the original G1 metal part by Hasbro and almost sold him off too. Why? I thought back then he was ugly and I bought the complete team at a flea market for a steal. Though I kind of appreciated his presence these many years later (he was btw my first TF gestalt).

In going after G1, be discriminating as in watch out for KOs (KOs for that matter are a double edge sword, the high end Devastator lacks certain connecting parts on Longhaul) so be prepared if you go the KO route.. Sometimes loose out of box are also okay. Do you prefer bone white plastic or one with slight discoloration? Complete? It depends on what standards you put out. And also, G1 figs (the re-issues or vintage both) can be a pain that they tend to crumble due to age.

I was probably one of the fortunate (not fortunate to have acquired Deathsaurus/ Starsaber or Overlord though  ) to have started collecting 25 years ago so prepare for a long haul (pardon the pun)

There are rare instances I purchase KO's. Oversized: six builder, minis: devastator & bruticus, Specials: Tutti frutti Devastator. and steals: KO Defensor (w/ red HotShot for $5). They have their place but can never substitute and original.
Third Party products also have a place where Hasbro doesn't do something quite right or not at all. I have a few FansProject pieces, Impossible Toys TRNS-1.
Reissues like the ToysRUs haven't been bad but still are not the same originals.
G1's out of box are never mint but the Astrotrain I picked up for a fair price. I have had to repair several of my originals like Bruticus. It is tough even getting the correct mold revisions for some example Devastator.

Bruticus was my first combiner, Devastator was my second. I love combiners so my shelves are full of them. If I could find a reasonably prices complete diecast G1 Predaking in fair condition I would be amazed.

Looks like the reissue it is.

I own the 2010 Predaking. It looks similar to me...

The platinium one even has a "new" sword! For cheaper! :|

But, it looks great on display. I much prefer the new shinier colours than the original yellow.

The Diecast is kinda an issue. Either that or Razorclaw's legs are loose, Predaking bends forward a little. Not too noticeable, but it's there.

I'd rather have the original. I have the Platinum Edition and it's not the best quality.
As for the value, I'd say the market is dropping out on a lot of things. Lately, buying TFs second hand hasn't cost people nearly as much. Reissues certainly don't help, either. I'm glad for reissues, though. Makes it affordable for everyone.

The Platinum Edition is ridiculously heavy and off balance because of all the die-cast content.

The Platinum and the 2010 reissue are the same item. In fact, the sticker sheet has Japanese writing all over them. It's exactly the same, right down to the paint apps and stickers.

Razorclaw (and all of them, for that matter) are a mess.

Divebomb: Forearms separate, head wants to droop in beast mode, ratchets too tight.

Rampage: Front legs don't want the ratchets to go all the way, leaving it as though he's tip toeing. (Fortunately, robot mode is excellent.)

Tantrum: Too tall in combined mode, you end up having to mistransform it to make it work. Very heavy. Reports of the head breaking off. (I can see why.)

Headstrong: Without that little flip out piece in robot mode, he's too heavy to stand and will fall over every time. Too short, especially in combined mode. (I don't remember this being a problem of the original, but if it is, then we can scratch this off.)

Razorclaw: Beast mode head and mane tend to flop around, arms too tight, legs waaaay too loose (it's a load bearing piece and it doesn't feel like it can bear the weight.) Front legs very much like Rampage's. One ratchet click off.

Predaking: Tends to want to fall over backwards or forward (especially forward) due to too much die-cast metal, like I said before...the legs are uneven and loose, and Rampage and Divebomb do not want to stay connected to Razorclaw without mistransforming him.

It's meh.

I think the sword is different in this edition.

Does anyone have a side by side to determine why he is too tall?

I heard people are missing sticker sheets and accessories. I already expected to realign stickers. Are the paint apps that bad? Pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks for all of the in details. I genuinely appreciate it.

So they added new die-cast parts that weren't on the original G1 version? That's weird.

G1 Predaking was released during the "material transition phase": early releases had die cast, while later more common releases (including the Japanese version) were all plastic.

The plastic version wasn't. I can't speak for the die-cast version as I never had it prior to this.

If you already have the 2010 version, you don't need this set, like at all. In fact, the 2010 set came with stickers to make their eyes red. This set does not. And yes, it includes the Primeverse Star Saber as a weapon for Predaking. It looks good with my Prime Optimus.

I did that with Razorclaw. No amount of tinkering helped me. If someone does have a fix, please let me know.

It's true. Some of the returns to Amazon and BBTS were due to missing sticker sheets and the accessory bag. I was fortunate, especially since I bought it from their Warehouse Deals over at Amazon. Everything was there. Paint apps aren't bad, actually. At least not on mine. Though, some people did have paint chipping off of the die-cast right out of the box. =\

No problem, glad to help! :)

GuyIncognito wrote:So they added new die-cast parts that weren't on the original G1 version? That's weird.

Even weirder... This is clearly the 2010 set repackaged, but the figures have a 2013 Hasbro stamp on them. (I don't know what they could've added or removed, but they're all stamped with it.)

I think he meant the reissue has more die-cast than the originals did. It might. I don't know since I don't own an original, but I do know it's friggin' heavy.

My original 1986 metal version tended to stoop a bit but all of them never had issues maintaining the Predaking form. As for the quality, I can't confirm if the plastics are not as good as the original. But given my experiences with some of the Encore (this is Encore I'm talking about) some degradation in quality is noticeable with examples like Bruticus, Ratchet and Meister's flame thrower attachment.

1.) My Razorclaw has plastic hips and legs. (the rod running through the torso to connect them to the body is metal.)

2.) Indeed.

3.) Indeed.

4.) His entire back. Good heavens, if you chucked him at someone you might actually maim them. lol

5.) Indeed.

Don't see it as a negative.

Here are the plusses:

1.) You've had it for 3, almost 4 years now.
2.) You received all the stickers, including the eyes. (I'd have wanted those. Badly.)
3.) You received the correct instructions. (The US version, both transformation and sticker placement are terrible.)
4.) The Star Saber he comes with ain't worth it.

Well I'm glad I read this because I've had my eye on Platinum Predaking for a while, I've just been waiting for the price to come down. After reading all this, the only way I'll buy it is if it comes down to like $50-$60 on clearance at some point.

I'll let you know what is metal on mine. If there are variants it will add a whole nother level of confusion.

The red eye stickers are for the "Decepticons have red eyes rule"? I don't remember the eyes being red in the cartoon. From the pictures I've seen the eye stickers are plain red. Anyone else have the red eye stickers to show?

Honestly, it's not worth the full asking price. It just isn't.

I'll let you know what is metal on mine. If there are variants it will add a whole nother level of confusion.

Please do.

The red eye stickers are for the "Decepticons have red eyes rule"? I don't remember the eyes being red in the cartoon. From the pictures I've seen the eye stickers are plain red. Anyone else have the red eye stickers to show?

I saw them once in a Google Image search. I'd still like to have them as it would give me a sense of completeness.

Is this an extra sword or does it replace one of the originals?

Who wants to put these guys on a scale and see what they weight in at? Would a food scale work or are we going to need a bathroom scale?

The Star Saber is an extra sword. All 5 original swords are included. A food scale would work best. All the bathroom scales I've ever used require quite a bit of pressure to make a viable weight read. Kitchen scales seem to work very well. A postal scale, if in the home, would be the best option. Too bad they're so expensive. >=|

Do you think the Platinum Edition Predaking depreciate the value of the original?

Regards.

If you only had choose one, choose the original. Nothing beats the original and the original does not depreciate either. The original is still priced higher brand new.

Box arrived in another cardboard box. No other packing material. This was from Amazon and not their warehouse. No damage to actual product box.

I have only gotten into the figure a little bit. The sticker sheet/instructions were behind the inner cardboard instead of in with Predaking. The left arm on mine didn't rotate at all. I opened it up and rotated it one click and it now has some motion. I can bring it up to a 90 degree and back to the one click position. This makes me think it's not a problem with the peg but the cuff. The cuff's teeth don't go all the way around. Certainly fixable with some filing. Left and right leg seem even.

That article is a glorified advertisement. Never mentioned anything about the original Hasbro and Takara version. This thread actually contains more details. ;)
