Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

Seiberton Henshin! Tokusatsu Discussion Thread

Motto: "Rule #45 of the Madeus Handbook: Timey wimey is an adequate term for scienc-y stuff."
After discovering a decent number of Sentai and Rider fans on here, decided to fire up another thread devoted to superheroes that are disrespected by and large by the fan community (they are not called POWER RANGERS, they are called SUPER SENTAI!)

So, discuss away!

To spark of debates, Kamen Rider Drive, thoughts?

Drive looks ok to me. Haven't seen it since like episode 5 or so. It just doesn't hook me waiting on the next episode. Gaim on the other hand had me enthralled and waiting each week with baited breath.

I like the late 1990s Kamen Rider Black and it's sequel Rx. Also, the original Gatcha...oopsie, wrong series......"Star Rangers" vs the Black Cross Organization and Jak -Q.

I haven't seen Drive yet, though i have been downloading the episodes. I get fansubs from Tv-nihon and i'm waiting for them to finish Kuuga and Agito, and then i'm going to watch the entire Heisei run in line.
I'm actually more of a Sentai fan. I'm following Ninninger and last week i binge-watched Kakuranger. I tried to watch Battle fever, but the available subs left a lot of conversation untranslated so i stopped with the second episode.

Tokusatsu, huh? I've only watched Kamen Rider Ryuuki, and it was pretty good.

There was another show called Cyber Cop back in the day; I really liked it as a kid.

In my opinion, it does get better, Type Formula just debuted and Kamen Rider Chase is set to appear in an episode or two.

I just split off the Sentai talk out of that other thread. That way it's all in one place.

Well, now that we got our own Toku thread, I vote that we can be permitted to talk about non-Japanese Tokusatsu-esque shows in addition to the Japanese-authentic ones. This would include Western adaptations of Japanese Toku (Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, etc.), purely Western-original Toku-esque shows (Mystic Knights, TMNT: The Next Mutation, Galidor, Ace Lightning, Aaron Stone, etc.), Toku-esque shows from non-Japanese Asian countries (can't think of any names, but I know they exist), or other examples from other categories (The Guyver movies, Pacific Rim, etc.)

To start, I'll ask three questions.

1. How many Tokusatsu or Tokusatsu-esque shows/movies/etc., of any country of origin, have you seen?

2. Is anyone else here currently watching Power Rangers: Dino Charge and relieved that it's finally no longer too painful to sit through like the last four years of the Neo-Saban era have been?

3. Has anyone else here seen that atrocious gratuitously dark/violent/grim/gritty/NSFW "Power/Rangers" fanfilm starring James Van Der Beek and Katie Sackhoff?

Absolutely!

Sabrblade wrote:1. How many Tokusatsu or Tokusatsu-esque shows/movies/etc., of any country of origin, have you seen?

In their entirety and in order of being viewed:

Ultraman Tiga
Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive (Boukenger)
Ultraman
Power Rangers: Jungle Fury (Gekiranger)
Ultraman Nexus
Ultraman Max
Ultraman Mebius
Ultraseven
Kamen Rider Drive (pending end)

Sabrblade wrote:2. Is anyone else here currently watching Power Rangers: Dino Charge and relieved that it's finally no longer too painful to sit through like the last four years of the Neo-Saban era have been?

Haven caught any yet, admittedly I don't like the suits or mecha from Kyoryuger. The last set of suits and mecha I enjoyed were from Gekiranger (plus my favorite music).

Sabrblade wrote:3. Has anyone else here seen that atrocious gratuitously dark/violent/grim/gritty/NSFW "Power/Rangers" fanfilm starring James Van Der Beek and Katie Sackhoff?

Skimmed it, too much violence, dominated the film, the Megazord fight needed more coverage, would've preferred a realistic update.

1. I stick to mostly Sentai. Have watched about half of Goseiger, all of Gokaiger, Gobusters, Kyoryuger, Toqger and am currently caught up on Ninninger. I have the Zyuranger DVD's so I will get to them as time allows. Watched the first 5 episodes of Kamen Rider Wizard, Loved all of Kamen Rider Gaim, Seen about the first 5 episodes of Kamen Rider Drive.

Have watched most of the Power Rangers seasons. I also have a soft spot for Super Human Samurai Syber Squad.

2. I am loving Dino Charge and all the original elements they have put in it. I believe they put more effort into the 1st episode than the entirety of Mega Force and Super Mega Force.

3. I have seen that fan film and didn't like it at all. There was nothing Power Ranger about it other than the names.

To answer my own questions:

1. Well, on the Japanese-original side, I've seen all of Kamen Rider Ryuki, all of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, and the Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai special.

On the Western side I've seen all of Power Rangers (which I own seasons 1-17 of on DVD), all of Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, some of Galidor, some of Ace Lightning, all of Aaron Stone, and a little bit of Los Luchadores (lost interest in it while it was airing).

I've also seen the two U.S.-made Guyver movies. The first is dumb and the second is awesome. And there's the awesome that is Pacific Rim.

2. I kinda answered this in my question.

3. That thing is abominable and completely fails as a satirical work. Good Power Rangers satire would be something like College Humor's "Zordon is a Racist" sketch.

The upcoming MMPR reboot movie must be looked over carefully by its creators to avoid making it into something like this miserable dreck of a fanfilm.

1. Been watching Ultraman shows strating with the original one since I was 6, all the way until Ultraman Dyna. After that, I kind of lost interest. Watched some Kamen Rider shows off and on, but the only one I remember most was Ryuuki.

2. Was never a fan of of the Saban shows, especially the awful Masked Rider (the one with the skinny kid). I've heard good things about Dragon Rider and will stream it if and when I get the chance.

3. Saw it, didn't think much of it.

1: i've seen parts of power rangers, masked rider and beetleborgs when i was a kid
as for japanese stuff, i've seen kabuto, den-o, decade, W, OOO's, kakuranger, dairanger and any sentai from gaoranger onwards.

2: no, and not interested in power rangers anymore, i prefer sentai

3: i've seen the first few minutes, but i didn't care for it. it's not supposed to be nitty gritty like that, imho

US
Power Rangers (all the way up to Ninja Storm)
VR Troopers (both seasons)
Masked Rider (you may all hate me)
Big Bad Beetleborgs
Super Human Samurai Syber Squad (I found it quite enjoyable)
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog

I should mention we also got Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills... Didn't watch it though, for good reason.

Japan
Kamen Rider Kuuga
Kamen Rider Agito

Kamen Rider Ryuki is on hiatus for now, but currently planning on checking out the Metal Heroes series, starting with the Space Sheriff trilogy (Gavan, Sharivan and Shaider).

2. Is anyone else here currently watching Power Rangers: Dino Charge and relieved that it's finally no longer too painful to sit through like the last four years of the Neo-Saban era have been?

Nope, stopped watching adaptations period.

I also enjoyed masked rider at the time, not that I remember much from it. I also enjoyed mystic knights when I saw it. Though I miss superhuman samurai syber squad (and it's catchy theme). I have started to look into the Japanese originals but I have no idea where to get started

If it helps, here are the series the US Adaptations are based on:

VR Troopers: Jikuu Senshi Spielban, Choujinki Metalder, Uchuu Keiji Shaider
Masked Rider: Kamen Rider Black RX (with hints of Kamen Rider ZO and Kamen Rider J)
Big Bad Beetleborgs: Juukou B-Fighter, B-Fighter Kabuto
Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad: Denkou Choujin Gridman

(A much shorter list since I only recently became a big sentai fan)

Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (first 20 episodes, I think...)
Gosei Sentai Dairanger (My favourite Sentai series, so happy the Power Rangers Legacy collection is releasing high-end toys based on the stuff MMPR used from this series)
Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger 10 Years After
Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger + Movie, VS Abaranger movie
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger + Movie, Gavan VS Movie
Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger + Movie, VS Go-Busters movie, 100 Years After movie
Ressha Sentai ToQger + Movie
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger (first two, maybe three episodes... not super impressed so far)

(Official Parody Series)
Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger.

Other (Japan)
Space Sheriff Gavan The Movie (2012)
Spider-Man (1978)

From America...

Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers
Power Rangers Super Megaforce (first few episodes, became painful to watch, and my love of Gokaiger didn't make it more watchable)
Power Rangers Dino Charge (First few episodes, much better than SMF)

Other than that, as a kid I remember watching some VR Troopers, Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad (which reminds me, I should watch Gridman), Beetleborgs, Saban's Masked Rider (*shudders*)

Sabrblade wrote:2. Is anyone else here currently watching Power Rangers: Dino Charge and relieved that it's finally no longer too painful to sit through like the last four years of the Neo-Saban era have been?

Instantly noticeable by the first episode. I only saw some of Super Megaforce as far as more recent Ranger stuff is concerned, but Dino Charge is shaping up to be a much better adaptation, and I might wait until more episodes have aired, then binge watch them.

Sabrblade wrote:3. Has anyone else here seen that atrocious gratuitously dark/violent/grim/gritty/NSFW "Power/Rangers" fanfilm starring James Van Der Beek and Katie Sackhoff?

Saw it, wasn't for me. A lotta people out there really get off on this gritty reimaginings stuff, but there's catering to a more mature audience, then there's alienating the core demographic of the source material. Honestly, a change in character names, some story elements, and some costume designs, and that could have been the basis for an awesome new adult oriented sci-fi franchise.
