I used to want to become a teacher, until I spent time talking to friends who were teachers.

I am a teacher, well, that's what the papers say I am. But I had to decide wether I want to draw or teach and I'm in the luxury position that I could choose. So I choose drawing/designing.

Both teaching and drawing for a living are fun, but for teaching you need to be very level-headed from time to time. That can be challenging. For what I currently do, I don't even need to wear pants if I don't want to. Which is great.

I really do enjoy the teaching side, it's the admin stuff that takes me down at university.

I do think, however, that teaching after primary and secondary/high school is a whole other bucket of stuff. Not sure I'd venture back into secondary teaching again after working with uni students.

I like history, and I considered being a history teacher at one point. I even started my college courses for a degree in education, but never finished it. Not sure if teachers make more than Walmart employees. (Seriously.)

I've worked with people ranging in age from 4 to 27. The 16-27 group, escpecially when put together, are easy as pie. They want to learn.

Inner-city youth from 13-16 are both great and, as I've mentioned, horrid. They combine hormones and a lack of motivation into something that is very scary indeed. But they eventually get to you and you start liking them.

I teach science to 11 and 12 year olds at a public school. My job is great during the periods I am teaching the kids. As soon as other grown ups get involved it becomes miserable. There is always a lot of bureaucratic BS going on like new programs to implement, budget issues, parents that think they know everything, etc etc.

I used to be a graphic artist at a large format print shop. I mostly set up other people's work for screen printing, vinyl graphics, and banner printing, but every once in a while I was given the opportunity to design something myself. I can weed vinyl like a pro, and I actually was given the task once to put the vinyl decals on an entire squad of police cars. I did this for about 6 years until I quit my job and went back to school. Now I'm an ER nurse, but I still draw and manage to pick up a few freelance jobs on the side.

Ha, try a secondary school's teacher's admin. Between parent's evenings, data inputting, report writing, phone calls home, interventions when pupils are underachieving, pastoral and academic meetings with colleagues and training days/meetings, I'm surprised I have any time for all the marking, planning and actual teaching! My day starts at 8am when I get into school and I don't finish working usually until 11pm that night.

When I'm in the classroom with the kids, it's fantastic. I work in a very white working class area where most of the pupils have, unfortunately, low aspirations but the kids are, for the most part, willing to learn and I have such a laugh with them. There are days where I want to strangle them but it's all par for the course.

I also get to go on cool trips for free. Last year I took 60 pupils to the World War One cemeteries and battlefields in France and Belgium. This year I'm taking 40 pupils to visit Auschwitz in Krakow. You don't get to do that in most other jobs.

It's one of the hardest, most rewarding things you can do in life.

In the A&E, a lot of mean looking hard as nails gorilla looking criminals turn to mush in my presence

Just a sign of a hypodermic needle and they turn into mewling milksops! Kind of like some of our compatriots here in the boards who tend to overcompensate with a bravdo online persona, an avulsed wound here or a traumatic decapitation there and they either become religious and discover the Flying Spaghetti Monster or become toddlers again..........calling for their mommies

I'm not sure about hardened criminals, but for most people, having one's head removed from one's body usually leaves someone incapable of feeling any kind of trauma...because he'd be dead. :P

I've worked some form of retail since I was about sixteen.

I went from a small independent toys/games store, the type that sold MTG and Pokemon cards (it was owned by my mother, so it was really barely a job), to six years as a gas station attendant, working graveyard shifts for the bulk of it. Left there after I wondered why I was doing it in the first place, moved on to being a deli clerk at a grocery store. Finally I left my hometown, moved to a larger population center, and now I work in a seafood store. The kicker? I can't stand seafood. I'd love to get out of there and do something worthwhile, but never having finished high school tends to get in the way.

Highlander jokes would be more appropriate. I can almost see Fenrir standing on the hood of a car, pretending to have a quickening at the crime scene while an obliging friend shines a flashlight up at him from below.

1 case having an arrow head stuck on the occipital region
1 case a car key stuck on the forehead (no seat belts ...what a dumb@ss)
1 case during a typhoon, flying roof shrapnel lopped of a portion of the [L] occipital area
1 case head splattered after being thrown off thea motorcycle
1 internal pressure build up after falling 3 storeys high
1 looney patient escaped the Psych ward, jumped off the 7th floor (that we had to formally pronounce DOA with his brains and cerbral fluids driping from the nose and ears, not to mention his forehead was like jelly already.
2 drunks whose heads were barely attached to the head after getting close and personal with "Astrotrain"

So in average, loosing heads 1 per quarter of a year. Loosing limbs? Payday and or holidays when drinking is like an orgy.

When I'm in the A& E, I'm as serious and maintain rapport with my patients. Stoic poker face.....no jokes here RhA. Post duty or in between cases, I go to seibertron and the other dark corners of the net.

Transformers is my wet blankey  I'm gonna curl up in a corner now

I also forgot, an old granny whose family is involved in a family feud. Well the opposing side gave her a vist and struck her face with a big @ss cleaver. The cleaver got stuck right across her face. good thing the Trauma surgery guys saved her. In the A& E when she was wheeled in, well we just stabilized her and off to the OR she goes.

On quiter times, a victim of a gangland style hit (female) was burned to death and dumped in a secluded area of the metropolis. Some bystanders brought in her broiled body (never fails in the 10PM-6:30 AM shift when you get the basket cases). Formality aside, we just had to officially pronounce her death.

The human body btw, when newly burned, smells a bit like a wet broiled potato. You can actually taste it despite using an N-95 PPE. The smell sticks to your nose et al.

You kidding? No bills, no responsibility, mom and dad still paying for everything? High school, and all its bullshit kiddie drama is a slice of apple pie compared to real life.

But I'd only go back if I could take my wife and kids with me. ;)
