And we have a winner... sorta.
The Blaster mold, or to be precise the Microman Radi-Casse Robo mold on which he's based, has a compartment in the back that can hold a cassette. In reality, that spot is for the Radio component that's shaped like a mini-Cassette, hence the name Radi-Casse Robo. It's not a battery compartment: those are hidden in the legs.

When Hasbro took over they removed the drivers to make the robots feel more like they functioned on their own.
You can of course still see how they could fit in the figures as the toys weren't retooled to ditch that option.
