First of all, WELCOME!
There may be a reason why you sold all of your geewuns way back then. Don't buy back everything you sold. You will regret having sold your first collection ten times over because you will have to pay three to twenty times what you earned back then.
Beside, Transformers evolved a lot from G1 to today, mostly for the better.
If you are serious about getting back to Transformers, may I suggest that you just buy 3 Transformers from ALL the regular lines ever released? Yes, even movie toys. Meaning buy one small, one regular, and one big. That way, you'll have a pretty interesting collection and you'll have a very good idea how the toy line evolved.
Are you on a tight budget? Start of by collecting every single representations of your favorite two main characters that appeared in most of the lines for the same result. My TF collection started as a Optimus Prime collection. Then Starscream followed. Pretty soon after, I got a little from everything.
Do you "hate" a TF toy line? Like maybe Beast War or Movies? Get some toys anyway from them. You may just be pleasantly surprised.
Anyway, if you just want to collect the old G1-G2 generations, that's fine. However, you will spend a lot of money just to miss out on so much greatness.
Finally, you need room and shelves. Lots of them. I do hope you are not the kind of person to just leave everything sealed on cards or in boxes. The pure pleasure to open up a toy, applying stickers, transforming and posing... It all surpass in infinite ways just keeping everyting boxed. I have a few toys sealed myself. But 99% of them are doubles of what I already have and oppened. Yes, all my Masterpieces and other expensive TF are openned and played with. I will not have it any other way.
In conclusion, welcome back to Transformers. Your heart rejoice whilst your wallet weep.
