Oh yeah.
Posing hot rod with ultra magnus may have been good for my shelf, but considering my mp-22 legs ratchet joint just broke. I don't think that will be happening.

Yes, Rodimus did. But Hot Rod didn't.

But wait, isnt rodimus ony rodimus when he weilds the matrix of leadership? Because in that episode (the clip is above), he removes the matric, hence becoming hot rod again and then recieves the matrix once again. Technically, whenever he opens his chest to insert the matrix, he is hot rod right up until the matrix fuses with him turning him into rodimus.

Yup, that's what I was going to say too. Later in the episode, Prime comes to his senses and places the Matrix within Hot Rod. When the chest opened there, he was definitely Hot Rod.

And then, of course, it opens from the other side later in the same episode (about 4:20):

Words cannot describe how much I loathed this episode as a kid when it originally aired (showing my age here). Not only did it solidify that some of my favorite characters were dead but also the fact that they were DEFINITELY not gonna come back. Then I had to watch Optimus die...TWICE in one year smh. Remember this was all before The Return of Optimus Prime was even a thought. ok end rant lol.

The point is that Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus were already Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus before they possessed the Matrix. They were already big and strong, so they didn't need an upgrade like Hot Rod.

Just throwing in some ideas pertaining to the mass shifting of Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime:

In TF:TM, when he gathers the matrix as it falls out of Optimus's hand, the matrix glows and kinda gives an effect of him looking bigger until he turns towards Ultra Magnus and we realize he's normal size as he's "giving" it to the "new leader". Later, when he pulls it from Galvatron (kinda the same glowy effect going on), he holds it above himself and "arises" as Rodimus Prime acknowledging his destiny. Galvatron shoots at him, he drops the matrix, yet he is still Rodimus Prime. Then he releases the power to destroy Unicron (but not enough that it has to be recharged and still staying as Rodimus).

Continuing!

As others have mentioned, he goes back to Hot Rod when the matrix is stolen by the Stunticons in The Burden Hardest to Bear (losing his physical connection to the matrix). He goes back to Rodimus when he regains it. Same thing in Dark Awakening, he turns it over to Optimus losing his connection and returning to Hot Rod. When Optimus returns it to him the process of acknowledgement begins and he's upgraded back to Rodimus.

Then Optimus comes back and takes it again (Return of Optimus Prime). Drains it to destroy the Hate Plague, but as he was "built" into Optimus Prime he stays normal whereas Rodimus goes back to Hot Rod.

....right?

Also, still buying this guy. I have to. I was checking out my TRU MP Rodimus last night and after realizing I can't transform him without instruction (so I didn't, I'll give it another try tonight) I inspected things and saw stress marks and I think even a broken piece!

Makes me want to figure out a way to get the full sized matrix in TRU MP Rodimus..somehow..

Ohhhh??? I've only seen clips from that episode as it is and was a bit confused by that. So you're saying we've seen an Early Optimus BEFORE he got the Matrix? I had thought that was part of the whole 'rebuilding' into the ultimate warrior thing.

Like I said, I only saw clips... but was there an explaination for the Aerialbots being there when 'Optimus' was introduced? Did they go back in time? I remember Optimus bring them to life in the Key to Vector Sigma episode...

As for Hot Rod's demotion. We've seen him shrink, did he ever use an altmode? I'm curious if they brought back the Hot Rod car.


As for the toy? Something about that Altmode just... really looks OFF. Something about the way the wheels are too small or hidden or something. Instead of looking like a sweet futurish tricked out earth-car.... it looks like a Cybertronian hover car/ship or something...

I remember the movie Hot Rod as being cooler then this... but can't find any good pictures :-/

I really like my Hot Rod from the Classics... that's a cool looking car, just wish he was bit bigger.

While we have had a whole bunch of coloured images we now have the box art revealed as well along with a breakdown of his promotional images (courtesy of fellow Seibertronian Autobot032). He is titled MP 28 Hot Rodimus, enjoy!
