This is another one of those gimmicks that ruins figures. It's not something you expect in the Masterpiece line.

I would expect it from Optimus Prime and Optimus Prime alone. Also, it doesnt look good. Is that actually where he store his matrix. For some reason I only imaging Rodimus holding it in front of him and not opening his chest flap and depositing it at the botton.
You know, I was thinking Burn. My favourite MPs are Lambor and Wheeljack. You know what they have in common? No gimmicks.

I think the figure looks good, and I'm looking forward to getting him, but I have to agree with you guys here. What doesn't help, for gimmick's sake, he never actually put the Matrix in his chest as Hot Rod. Remember, he grew into Rodimus Prime while holding the Matrix open in front of him. So, in a way, it's inaccurate, or at least unnecessary, for him to hold it in his chest as Hot Rod.
Aside from that, the other little thing that nags me, design-wise, is how his hood/chest sticks out further than his collar. I was hoping it was just a slight mis-transformation on the prototype, but apparently it is that way. Just looks a bit off, to me at least.
On a positive note, I am glad we're getting a smaller normal sized Hot Rod.

We do have Rodimus opening his chest to access the Matrix (at 2:45):
The yellow flame swings open sideways in the episode Dark Awakenings, where Optimus comes back the first time. (Now I need to look at the MP again to see how the chest opens....)

I stand corrected! I forgot about after Prime came back. Thanks for reminding us about that. Actually, I feel a little better about it opening now.

Yeah ... while my initial reaction was disappointment that they're doing a character that has already been done (in a way), I've accepted that I'll now be able to pose both characters.
It's such a shame though HR is the way he is. So many flaws.

Oh, not a problem. I remembered Roddy opening his chest, but it took me a while to figure out where I saw it. Now, the MP opens on the wrong side, but....
[Edit] And then, of course, it opens from the other side later in the same episode (about 4:20):
There were never this sort of animation errors in the TF cartoons, were there? #ExtremeSarcasm
At least in this shot, we get a bit more detail inside Roddy's chest....

I don't think so. I think it is just the reality of the physics of space involved in the toy. I don't know how they would get it higher in the chest to make it look right. I guess I would have preferred leaving the gimmick out all together.
On the other hand, we can just not play with Roddy's chest like that...
(Would have been a better double entendre if it was Arcee we were talking about?)

Something doesn't seem right here, but I'm not sure that's it. The whole upper torso just seems wrong, almost like it's mistransformed. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but yeah, it seems off.

Rodimus Prime wrote:Yes, Rodimus did. But Hot Rod didn't.
But wait, isnt rodimus ony rodimus when he weilds the matrix of leadership? Because in that episode (the clip is above), he removes the matric, hence becoming hot rod again and then recieves the matrix once again. Technically, whenever he opens his chest to insert the matrix, he is hot rod right up until the matrix fuses with him turning him into rodimus.

Yup, that's what I was going to say too. Later in the episode, Prime comes to his senses and places the Matrix within Hot Rod. When the chest opened there, he was definitely Hot Rod.

No he wasn't. Not only did he not change in size, but Optimus even called him "Rodimus" before removing the Matrix from himself and putting it into Rodimus's chest. At about 2:40 in the clip below:
william-james88 wrote:How is he Rodimus without the Matrix? Wouldnt it just be Prime seeing hot rod as the trusted leader and thus calling him by his leader name?
Maybe. Regardless of the reason, he's not shorter and he is addressed as "Rodimus." When Optimus gives him the Matrix and he inserts it into his chest, nothing happens to him physically. He stays the same. Therefore, it's logical to conclude that based on physical appearance and Optimus's verbal confirmation, Rodimus was Rodimus before the Matrix was given back to him, which leads me to conclude that once the Matrix changed him, it was permanent, whether he was physically connected to it or not. This is Dark Awakening. In Burden Hardest to Bear, he does revert back to his old car mode once he gives up the Matrix, but I'm not sure if he's referred to as Hot Rod or Rodimus.

At the 3:00 mark of Agamemnon's video... he does visibily shrink on screen. As for the Rodimus name?? I have no idea. I can't look TOO closely at G1. After all, Optimus isn't Orion Pax without the Matrix, so there really is a lack of consistency for the rules.
Not to mention that Ultra Magnus never even GOT a new form... someone must have decided he was tall enough

The Matrix was never meant to be UMs. Listen to Flint Dille's commentary in the movie/dvd 1986 TFTM. What we thought was an animation error was supposed to be an ominous portent (i.e. the Matrix falling out and UM re-adjusting it again). Only the animation didn'trender it properly to show the message.

Upon further reflection, I really don't understand how Takara felt this was a good route to go on this figure. A shell former for masterpiece is completely ridiculous.

When Optimus puts the Matrix back into Hot Rod in that second clip from "Dark Awakening", nothing happens AT FIRST. But after Optimus walks off, Hot Rod begins struggling and groaning as his body undergoes its metamorphosis into Rodimus Prime once again. The animation is just not as clear on this since his face is still drawn as the wrinkle-free Hot Rod face during this scene. But really, AKOM was so notorious for its animation errors in that season that it really isn't a wonder that they flubbed up the animation of Hot Rod's return to his Rodimus form in that scene.

I respectfully disagree.
"he not change in size" animation error, earlier we see Hotrod in alt mode and hes as big as Ultra magnus "Optimus even called him "Rodimus"before removing the Matrix from himself and putting it into Rodimus's chest.
Blurr and Wheelie both called him Rodimus too....so call it force of habit
and as I pointed out above, earlir in the scene we see Hotrod in alt mode, he was a car not a funky camper........

and when Optimus gaqve him the matrix back some thing did happen, his body was shaking/shuttering,
and yes, in the Burden Hardest to Bear, he's referred to as Hot Rod after he looses the matrix, by Ultra magnus us.
so based on all that, its logical to assume his height was an animation error, bthe use of the name "Rodimus" was habit and that he is only a PRIME when he is physically connected to the matrix
