The Congo – Fire Down Below

Earth is a beautiful planet, lush with life, overflowing with energy and ripe for the taking. The Decepticons want to conquer it and harness that energy for their own purposes. The Autobots want to keep it out of Decepticon hands. This forum contains their battles and struggles all across the planet.

"Hrmph.” Headstrong merely snorted at Tantrum’s finding himself in a ditch after collision with Motormaster and scolding by Razorclaw. Served the hothead right. It wasn’t like he had felt any need to defend their team’s honor given he knew that Razorclaw was going to call it off anyway. If a push came to a shove even Motormaster’s formidable strength wouldn’t save the Stunticons from the wrath of the Predacons. And knowing that was enough for Headstrong.

With Scrapper giving his report, Motormaster’s steely gaze began searching for a sign of Offroad but the off-road specialist was nowhere to be seen. Clever. He’d give some points to Offroad for that. But not clever enough. For the anger visible on Motormaster’s face was evident. Through his trickery, Offroad had earned some of the Stunticon demon’s wrath. For Motormaster had little tolerance for those slighting him. He’d get his eventually. But for now, they had work to do.

”Get working you slaggers!” Motormaster roared, giving a swift kick to Wildrider’s aft, sending him flying through the mine entrance. ”We have wasted enough time!”

What he and Grimlock had suspected was proving to be correct: tracking the strange residues was a little easier from the shuttle. The results weren't perfect, but anything was better than roaming mostly blind.

"I think....this way," Swoop said, angling the ship's flight controls to match the detection of the residue.

>>”Copy that, Scrapper. Good job.”<< Razorclaw commed back, happy to hear that the Constructicon Commander had everything under control. No cause for alarm.

With everyone else calming down and the infighting subsiding, Razorclaw wanted to get everything back on track so that they could extract the ore-13 and get back to the Thanatos within the next few cycles. Motormaster had the Stunticons handled. It was up to the lion-former to keep his own team in check so that things didn’t spire out of control again.

Predacons, continue your patrols,” Razorclaw barked his orders out loud as he approached his team. “I know it’s a boring assignment, but try to make the best of it and do not further antagonize the Stunticons or anyone else for that matter! We all have a job to do!” The Predacon Commander then looked skyward towards where his aerial subordinate was perched.

>>”Divebomb, continue keeping a look-out up there. Report anything strange immediately.”<<

With his orders reinforced, Razorclaw moved over by Motormaster. “Hopefully, we can now wrap this all up soon.”
_______________

Drag Strip let out a sigh of relief once Rampage and the other Predacons had heeded Razorclaw’s warning and backed down. At least now the Stunticons wouldn’t be torn apart by a bunch of mechanical animals. Of course, it didn’t take long for the Predacons to be replaced by an even greater threat.

Motormaster wrote:”Get working you slaggers! We have wasted enough time!”

Drag Strip flinched as he saw Motormaster kick Wildrider into the mine entrance. Not wanting to draw his commander’s wrath towards himself, the yellow racer hurried over to the hole in the ground and quickly entered into the mine.

“Come on, Breakdown, let’s get moving before we end up in a mangled heap like ol’ ‘Rider!”

Swoop wrote:"I think....this way.”

“Good, follow trail closely, Swoop,” Grimlock told the bombardier as he leaned forward in the command chair and watched the primary viewscreen intently. There had to be Decepticons at the end of this trail and thus a battle waiting for them to engage in. There just had to be.

As the shuttle descended through the clouds, the continent of Africa came into view. The rex-former tapped a few buttons on the control pad attached to his command chair. The image on the forward viewscreen then zoomed in on the general direction the residue trail was headed.

“We seem to be heading for center of continent,” Grimlock spoke. “Place called the Congo. Swoop, perform long-range scan of entire region. Look for Cybertronian signatures or anything unusual. Me want Decepticons found!"

Divebomb's initially sarcastic reply was thwarted by his better judgement. Razorclaw had enough to worry about for the time being. Besides, if this proved to be the energy cache they were all hoping for, the lack of excitement would be worth it.

"Yeah....unless the Constructicons miscalculated. Then instead of a mangled heap we'll be a molten one," Breakdown said, following after Drag Strip.

"You're starting to see the world the way I do," Dead End added.

"That scares me more than you know."

”Agreed.” Motormaster replied to the wish voiced out by Razorclaw while staring daggers at the backs of his minions. ”This place is no place for a Cybertronian. Organic gunk everywhere. And the humidity. Of all damned places...”

Having said his piece, the large Stunticon shrugged his shoulders, ”Not that it matters. We need this ore and nothing save for a slaggin’ miracle is going to stop us retrieving it.”

Having said that, Motormaster began marching after his troops. ”And if I gotta get my actuators dirty so we get the slag away from here faster, so be it.”

”Oof.” Rampage figured he might as well get this over with. He went back around the treeline and decided to… ‘keep an eye out’. By keeping an optic out, he’d be patrolling the perimeter, staying alert for Autobots… ah, who was he kidding. He was just going to right back to his holovids. Not like the Autobots would ever bother showing up in some isolated part of the planet like this. He could stay off-task for a while and not have Razorclaw notice, he’d done it plenty of times.

And so he booted up his next saved holovid of what Earthlings called “sitcoms”.

Scrap, that may not have been a good idea, Tantrum thought as he rolled onto his stomach. He didn’t lose often, but when he did he was never sure what was worse: the physical damage or the suffering of his pride.

Razorclaw wrote:“I said ENOUGH, TANTRUM!!”

Being manhandled wasn’t something he was used to, and having Razorclaw pick up him by his horns added to his wounded pride, though it wasn’t as bad as having Motormaster best him. I’ll get that—

His thought trailed off as Razorclaw’s furious faceplate filled his optics.

Razorclaw wrote:“Stand down NOW or I’ll personally throw you into that volcano! We’re here to work not fight each other!”

Tantrum landed with a hard thud after Razorclaw tossed him, and he gave his leader a look promising retribution. The onlything that saved his leader at the moment was the fact they had others present. He fully understood the fact they were stronger together than separate, so his opportunity would have to wait. The Cybertronian that triggered his rage was another story. He didn’t have to look hard to find Rampage prancing and gloating over those Tantrum had nailed.

He’s getting was too much enjoyment out of his, he thought, his energon reheating at the understanding he’d been tricked. No one does this to me! He pawed the ground, ready to unleash his reborn fury when Razorclaw addressed Rampage.

His temper cooled at seeing his teammate dealt with, but a fie still burned within him, and he didn’t intend on this being the end of it.

Razorclaw wrote: “Predacons, continue your patrols. I know it’s a boring assignment, but try to make the best of it and do not further antagonize the Stunticons or anyone else for that matter! We all have a job to do!”

Right, a job to do. That was one way of putting it as Tantrum chose to follow Razorclaw’s orders. It was this planet’s fault as much as Rampage’s that he had been taken to task. If there were only some Autobots to crunch…

Trotting toward Rampage as they headed back to their assigned posts, he said, “I don’t appreciate being the butt of your jokes.” He snorted in Rampage’s direction, then steered away. If they were going to continue this foolishness they were embarked on, he may as well do it solo.

His mood improved greatly as the incident was further in the rearview of his processor. He’ll get thirsty at some point. And then we’ll see who’s laughing, he thought, chuckling as he swung his head to the side and broke a small tree in half with his horns.

Snarl was bored and anxious, a bad combination for any mech, but especially for a Dinobot. He continued to stroke and tap the buttons on his console. It wasn’t that he wanted or fight or wanted to relax. He was just stuck dealing with the heightened sense at being so close to a fight brought.

And now they hunted. Why couldn’t the Decepticons make it easy and just fight? Why did they have to be so much like the Autobots?

He let out a groan as the shuttle headed into the planet’s atmosphere. Out of all places he’d seen, this was a world where a Dinobot could thrive. If it weren’t for the humans inhabiting it, but he wasn’t about to voice that. Grimlock wouldn’t allow it, but more than that it was wrong. Snarl may want to fight, but he wanted to fight someone that was challenging.

Grimlock wrote: “We seem to be heading for center of continent,” Grimlock spoke. “Place called the Congo. Swoop, perform long-range scan of entire region. Look for Cybertronian signatures or anything unusual. Me want Decepticons found!"

“We all want Decepticons found, Leader Grimlock,” he muttered, unsure if it was low enough to avoid their leader’s audio receptors. Not that he cared, as he’d simply stated a fact. To save time, assuming Swoop found Decepticons, he checked their weapons, ensuring power was still being sent to the targeting and firing systems.

Autobots tricky. May have used something to keep us from fight, he thought.

"That insufferable brute certainly had his wires all riled up. But what can you expect from a bunch of thugs and hooligans heeding the call by an amateur who’s clearly spooking them just for cheap chuckles.”

We certainly had an interesting mix of mechs sent on this assignment," Scrapper said, agreeing with the core of Hook's sentiment. "But...as it was Megatron who did the sending, I have faith he had his reasons. Besides..."

>>Fire in the hole!<< Bonecrusher bellowed over the comms. Shortly thereafter, a series of controlled explosions began erupting.

>>"Heading in further. Scavvy, cover my six. Full scannies!"<< Mixmaster followed up.

Scrapper himself was not one to sit idly by while others on his team did the work. Transforming into his frontloader mode, he drove further into the cavernous depths of the volcanic mountain.

>>"Uhh, chief? Bossboss? I think we might have somethin',"<< Mixmaster popped back on the comms.

"Something? What 'something'?" Scrapper asked.

>>"Y'know. The ore. The good stuff. Scavenger's scanners picked it up."<<

"We're on our way."

As swift and surprising as the kick he’d received from Motormaster, a funny thought barged into Wildrider’s central processor—right before his harsh landing into the mine which, incidentally, became slightly less funny the instant his face-plate and the ground made their introductions.

“I am always living up to my name.” He rose slowly on shaking limbs, groaning. “Whether on the open road, the narrow streets of a city, or the entrance of a mine, I’m always riding wild.”

The Stunticon paused, pondering over what he’d just said to himself. Riding wild... Riding wild... There was some sense to that remark, wasn’t there? You only had to—

Frag it. Nobody else had heard it, so it was fine.

Wildrider rubbed his backside, half expecting to find Motormaster’s foot firmly jammed up there. It wasn’t, but it sure felt like it was. The boss had literally kicked his aft. In a way, it was hilarious.

He turned, grinning at Breakdown, Drag Strip, and Dead End. “Hey, shirkers! Work called, and it wants you to hurry up and get to it!”

”Interesting – that certainly isn’t the word I would have picked the describe these ruffians.” Hook scoffed as he followed Scrapper deeper into the mountain where their own resident ruffian Bonecrusher had began his demolitions.

While Hook was not going to give praise to his teammates any time soon, he had to admit they excelled with their roles in the Constructicons. Even a dim wit like Bonecrusher served his role surprisingly well with Scavenger guiding his destructive fury into right direction and with precision only Mixmaster’s material analysis could offer.

”This better be worth my time.”

The closer they got to the surface, even though it was still a long distance away, the more of this planet's natural beauty shone through for Swoop. He liked this land they were heading to. He felt like he could live here.

“We seem to be heading for center of continent. Place called the Congo. Swoop, perform long-range scan of entire region. Look for Cybertronian signatures or anything unusual. Me want Decepticons found!"

"Swoop scanning! Swoop scanning!" the aerial Dinobot said, trying to calm their commander's notorious impatience.

The scan seemed to go on forever. Every astrosecond felt like an orn.

“Grimlock! Scanner beeping,” Sludge said. Swoop looked over at the beep and then brought up the alert screen. The Trion immediately linked with security files that red Alert had made available to all Autobots, particular energy signatures to be on the lookout for along with other security tips for maintaining Autobot integrity in the region. The signature that the Trion had picked up was not the residue of another ship, but instead one of these signatures from one of Red's "alerts".

"Scanner beeping because ship find something. It just flared moment ago," Swoop said, bringing up some additional screens. "Not from 'Con ship trail. From energon and ore. On planet."

“Hey, shirkers! Work called, and it wants you to hurry up and get to it!” Wilrider chided.

"Shirkers?! How dare he!" Breakdown harrumphed, still following the others deeper into the mountain.

He then noticed Scrapper and Hook heading deeper into the mountain with a quickness to their step.

"I think the greenies found something..."
___

”This better be worth my time,” Hook grumbled. Scrapper was more than used to his mutterings by now. When it came down to do the precision work the Constructicons were known for, few were better than the surgical engineer.

"Even if this is a false alarm, I think it will be," Scrapper said, his pace quickening. Scavenger came running up to them and then motioned for them to follow.

"Look! Look!" Scavenger said. "Bonecrusher blew it wide open!"

Scrapper's optics widened. Though they were heading deeper into the caves and had lost all of their external sources of illumination, Bonecrusher, Long Haul and Mixmaster had a slight purple glow to them as iridescent purple veins stretched along the wall and the surface.

"There's a magma flow several dozen meters below our current position and....this. This! Energon. Naturally occurring. And!"

Scavenger ripped a chunk of rock out of the wall.

"Lots of different composite minerals, a few of which I don't recognize but also....hehe....Ore-13!"

Scrapper took the chunk of rock that Scavenger gladly handed him and analyzed it more closely. He then opened a comm to Razorclaw and Motormaster.

Dead End ignored Wildrider. He almost told Breakdown to do the same (starving Wildrider of attention, while an unpredictable venture as it only succeeded fifty per cent of the time, was, very unfortunately, the most effective strategy to shutting down his ridiculous antics), but decided against it. Wasting words, he’d be doing, as he’d always done, advising his team-mates to stay silent and refuse to engage in the nonsense the terrorist perpetually threw in their facial-plates. It wasn’t worth the effort.

But when the scout remarked that the Constructicons might have discovered the reason for their being here in this filthy mine, Dead End was inclined to ask Breakdown a rhetorical question that brimmed with all the enthusiasm of—

Who even cared, anyway?

Motormaster wrote:"Agreed. This place is no place for a Cybertronian. Organic gunk everywhere. And the humidity. Of all damned places...Not that it matters. We need this ore and nothing save for a slaggin’ miracle is going to stop us retrieving it. And if I gotta get my actuators dirty so we get the slag away from here faster, so be it.”

Walking up alongside the Stunticon Commander, Razorclaw nodded. “This world is disgusting much like the organic coverings I’m wearing, but it is a necessary evil to achieve our goals. The ore is worth all this discomfort, my friend.”

Scrapper wrote:>>"Friends...we've hit paydirt.”<<

>>”Outstanding, Scrapper. We’re on our way.”<<

“Let’s go see the spoilers of our discomfort, shall we?” Razorclaw said to Motormaster as he transformed into his lion alt mode and made his way down into the lava tubes.

Underground Lava Tubes

Wildrider wrote:“Hey, shirkers! Work called, and it wants you to hurry up and get to it!”

Breakdown wrote:"Shirkers?! How dare he!”

“Just ignore him, Breakdown,” Drag Strip said as they headed deeper into the volcanic underground. “He’s just trying to get under your armor plates.”

Breakdown wrote:"I think the greenies found something…"

“Indeed,” the yellow racer replied. “Let’s follow before the boss decides to kick us, too.”

Drag Strip followed Scrapper and the others as their pace quickened. Soon, they met up with Scavenger who then took them to where Bonecrusher had found the ore. Natural light had all but disappeared this deep underground. Instead, a brilliant purple glow illuminated the tunnels as a multitude of veins of Ore-13 stretched out across the walls and ceiling around them.

Dead End wrote:“I suppose this is the part where we, the shirkers, are to toil away now?”

“Yes, Dead End,” Drag Strip answered. “This is were the ‘fun’ begins.” The yellow racer then approached Scrapper. “Us Stunticons are here to help. Where do you want us to start?”

Dinobot Shuttle – Over Africa

Snarl wrote:“We all want Decepticons found, Leader Grimlock.”

Grimlock turned to look at the Desert Warrior. “Me never said otherwise, Snarl. But, me patience wearing thin.” The rex-former wanted to fight Decepticons. He wanted to show Autobot High Command how to take the fight to the enemy instead of just sitting around waiting for the Cons to make the first move. A more proactive stance was needed to win the war and Grimlock wanted to prove that he was right.

Sludge wrote:“Grimlock! Scanner beeping.”

The Dinobot Commander returned his attention to the main view screen as Swoop brought up the alert that was causing the beeping. “What is it, Swoop?”

Swoop wrote:Scanner beeping because ship find something. It just flared moment ago. Not from 'Con ship trail. From energon and ore. On planet."

“On planet?” Grimlock replied, rubbing his chin guard. “This no coincidence. Trail lead to same area where energon ore now detected? No coincidence! That where we find ‘Cons!” The Dinobot leader then stood from his command chair and pointed directly at the source on the view screen. “Set a course, Swoop! Take us there now!”

[Jungle near Mt Nyiragongo]

Rampage overheard something from the others about having found the thing they were looking for, but he was too busy watching his episode and supposedly attempting to patrol around the perimeter. His job was boring, and these holovids were the only thing that were really going to keep him awake for the next vorn or however long it took them to finish up here.

There was some annoying message from one of the Constructicons on his comm-link. He promptly ignored it. This holovid… ‘cartoon’ (at least that’s what Rampage understood of the fleshlings’ categorisation of it) was rather amusing. The cat kept chasing around the mouse over and over, and oh Primus the shenanigans! This was great. He could keep going through this one over and over. It never got old!

While the others were down in the mine, something loomed above…

[Dinobot Shuttle - Over Africa]

Sludge see Grimlock tell Swoop fly to signal. Sludge look at screen same way Slag and Snarl and Grimlock look at screen. Energon on planet. Inside jungle with big smokey mountain to side of jungle. Wonder what be?

”Lets. If they really found it, I want a sampler, hah.” Motormaster replied to Razorclaw as he entered the tunnels and headed directly towards the location marked by the Constructicons on their shared map projection.

It didn’t take them long to reach the area the Constructicons were scurrying in. ”So what the slag was all that noise about?” the Stunticon brute rumbled as he made his way towards Scrapper. ”Is it really Ore-13?”

“I suppose this is the part where we, the shirkers, are to toil away now?”

"You called it," Breakdown said with a smirk as he watched the gathering near the greenies steadily increase inside. All around them were glowing veins of energon that seemed to grow more intense the deeper down into Bonecrusher's demolished caved they went.

"I just hope they share."

“Just ignore him, Breakdown. He’s just trying to get under your armor plates,” Drag Strip added in an effort to calm Breakdown's constant nerves. He'd been doing a fair amount of that lately, likely to make up for his disastrous role as a concubine of the Fallen, willingly or no. Either way, Breakdown wasn't going to argue with the attitudinal shift.

As a group, they headed deeper and Drag Strip offered up their services, as if Motormaster wouldn't bellow something out in the next few astroseconds anyway.

Oh well, at least this mission would allow them to top off their tanks.

In short order, the Stunticons had arrived, offering their assistance. Scrapper acknowledged them with a nod, but held off on saying more. He knew that Motormaster tended to prefer dealing with his own subordinates and Scrapper had no preferences to the contrary. Given what they had discovered and hoped for, it wouldn't be long before-

”So what the slag was all that noise about? Is it really Ore-13?” Motormaster said, the tone in his voice indicating that if they had come down here for nothing, it wouldn't be pretty. Fortunately, Scrapper was not one to waste anyone's time, particularly his own.

"See, see, see!" Mixmaster interjected, holding up the raw ore to the approaching team commanders.

"Easy Mixmaster," Scrapper said, waving off the chemical engineer. "See for yourself, my friends. Not simply ore. Ore and raw energon. Bonecrusher is readying another blast that will open up even more of the vein. This is no longer an exploratory site. We'll need to inform high command and begin the process of converting it into a fully-functioning mine."

“On planet? This no coincidence. Trail lead to same area where energon ore now detected? No coincidence! That where we find ‘Cons!”

Swoop nodded. Definitely not coincidence.

“Set a course, Swoop! Take us there now!”

"Aye," Swoop said, bringing up the location where their ship had detected the strange reading and zeroing in on it.

"Setting course," the Aerial Assault Specialist said. "And off we go."

Razorclaw arrived at the Constructicons’ location deep underground and swiftly transformed back into his robot mode. The familiar glowing veins of purple stretched out along the walls and ceiling of the lava tube they were in. The Predacon Commander quickly found Scrapper and the others. Motormaster was right beside him.

”Is it really Ore-13?” The Stunticon leader bellowed in his usual deep, gruff voice.

Wasting no time, Mixmaster was quick to show them to raw ore, itself. ”See, see see!”

“Easy Mixmaster. See for yourself, my friends. Not simply ore. Ore and raw energon. Bonecrusher is readying another blast that will open up even more of the vein. This is no longer an exploratory site. We'll need to inform high command and begin the process of converting it into a fully-functioning mine,” Scrapper explained.

Razorclaw took a sample of the raw mineral and examined it closely. “Excellent, Scrapper. You and your team have done very well, as usual, my friend. Commence with further blasting while I inform high command of our success. Begin preparations for conversion of this site into a fully functioning mine. Lord Megatron will be most pleased.”

The Predacon Commander then handed the raw ore over to Motormaster before opening up a direct, highly encrypted comm line to the slagmaker, himself:

>>”Lord Megatron, this is Razorclaw. The Constructicons have successfully uncovered a substantial deposit of Ore-13 here in the Congo. With your approval we will begin to expand our operation into a fully functional mine. Further extraction of the ore will commence shortly. I will keep you appraised of our progress, my lord.”<<
_______________

Drag Strip stood nearby and awaited further instructions. With all of the commotion over the uncovered Ore-13, Scrapper had not yet told him or the other Stunticons what to do next. Unfortunately for them, ol’ Motorhead had already arrived to see the spoils of the Constructicons’ work. It was only a matter of time before the Stunticon brute bellowed out his own orders with some physical abuse to go along with them.

Dinobot Shuttle – Over Mt. Nyiragongo

“Aye. Setting course. And off we go,” Swoop said, guiding the shuttle high over the Congo and towards the large volcano that could be seen in the distance on the primary viewscreen.

“Activate stealth mode, Swoop, and approach with caution. Me don’t want to alert ‘Cons of our presence just yet,” Grimlock said as he remained standing behind the bombardier. The anticipation within his circuits increased with every passing astrosecond as the image of the volcano grew bigger and bigger. The shuttle’s scanners then finally detected the source of the trail they had been following all this time.

“There!” The Dinobot Commander shouted, pointing once again to the viewscreen as an image of something metallic could be seen down below through the trees. Upon closer inspection, it was quickly confirmed to be another shuttle craft. Grimlock swiftly approached the console next to Swoop and punched in a few commands. The image on screen zoomed in on the very familiar purple insignia on top of the craft. “Decepticons! Finally! Swoop, land nearby immediately. Dinobots….”

Grimlock turned to face the others. “Prepare for all out assault!”

"A team effort to be sure. It makes it significantly easier to do our work when we know we have teams such as yourselves backing us up and securing the area."

He then turned to Hook.

"Now to begin requisitioning the prefabricated structures that we can incorporate into this unstable terrain."
