Actually no.

The Doctor could rarely perform pinpoint accurate landings in the old series, whereas in this series he's done it numerous times. AND, he actually ends up where he wants to go on a regular basis.

Maybe he got that problem fixed for the Time Wars out of necessity?

Great episode! I missed the Saxon reference as well. What was it? Next week should be interesting, with the Face of Boe.

Oh, I agree that it's in character for him to be mourning a lost loved one. It's just that I get enough of mopy poeple pining for their loved ones in real life and I could do with a break from it.

And at least I wasn't the only one to miss the Saxon reference. I rekon they are doing it differently this series. As we know Saxon is a person, not an institution or a phrase spread through time by a lonely TARDIS, I think Saxon references will only appear in episodes set in modern day or the future of Earth. And does any one else think they need to do more off world travelling as well?

Personally, I'm liking this new series, but whats niggling me is the fact that Russell T. might actually end up becoming the new JNT

Yes.

And compare this season to last season.

The first three eps of both seasons have seen stories set in ...

One building - school in School Reunion and a hospital in Smith and Jones
New New York
Old England

First sign of unoriginality?

That could be a bad thing. Anyone who wants to get rid of Tom Baker loses some brownie points with me. Even though Tom Baker got a great seven year run as the Doctor...

I third that. I'd like to see more adventures in an all-alien environment... no "future of Earth" stories, though they can be interesting too.

John Nathan Turner fired Tom Baker and basically did too much. He stayed too long as producer in the late 70s and well into McCoy's run

He basically over stayed his welcome

I was just thinking about this, and about this week's episode. There was even a similar dialogue exchange, when Martha started talking in an accent, and the Doctor was like, "no don't do that." Same thing happened with Rose last season in "Tooth & Claw." I mean it's funny, and it could be a running gag throughout the series... I just hope it's a while before we see it used again ;) On the other hand, perhaps that could be the humor... a companion trying too hard to fit in with time travelling and the Doctor winces in embarassment all the time. :???:

Well it's the same as him mouthing the "it's bigger on the inside than on the outside" line. That's been a running line throughout DW.

And when you're a thousand odd years old and had as many companions as the Doctor has had and travelled to all parts of the galaxy, he's bound to get similar reactions time and time again.

So maybe not a gag but a touch of realism?

Some bad news for the next ep.... possibly.

In it's infinite wisdom the BBC is showing the football right before Doctor Who on Saturday envening. It's a semi-final match or something between Manchestor Rovers and some other team. (I'm sure you can guess I don't really know football....)
Anyway the gyp is that if the football goes into extra time and/or penalties, then Doctor who will be postponed until the following week. Aparently this is becuase they can't delay the craptacular phone-vote talent show which goes out live following Doctor Who....

Fecking spiffing eh?

They used to do it all the tiome back in the day when BBC2 showed shows like Buffy or Trek every weekday night at 6pm....

Due to the exciting coverage of the final of the tennis/golf/darts/snooker/bowls running longer then expected tonights episode of Buffy the vampire slayer/star trek deep space nine/star trek voyager/star trek the next generation has been postponed and will now be shown in two weeks time....

Of course it was equaly likely that shows like that would be removed from the schedules completely for a number of weeks while the pointless sport of the season was put on the air instead.
Damn I hate sport.

Still it's always good to hear when the terrestrial channels have lost the rights to broadcast yet another sport to sky.
Heartwarming I'd say.

Fingers crossed it'll be the tennis next as their usual trick is to show 2 different games at the same time on BBC1 and BBC2...

To be fair, New New York is in a completely different galaxy, and is *not* our Earth.

Smith & Jones was set in one building on the freaking moon people. Hell, the Satan pit was set in one building, roughly.

Old England? The Hell? There's a pretty major difference between the 1600's hundreds and 1900's. It's in the past, yeah, but there's 300 years worth of difference there. The TARDIS is used for travelling backwards in time as well as forwards...

To be fair, however, I have been saying we need off-world stories for a short while. I'd be quite angry if it wasn't for the fact that we had the excellent Satan Pit two-parter.

And the TARDIS still doesn't always work. At least, during Eccleston's series it cocks-up once or twice.

Wow. Cranky much?

New New York may be on a planet in a different galaxy but it is essentially the future of Earth as that's where a lot of humanity ended up. (Or to put it another way, the future of human kind)

School Reunion was for the most part based in a school. They popped out to a diner briefly but the majority of the storyline was set in a school, like Smith and Jones was set in a hospital.

1600's, 1900's, 300 years of difference, in the end it still featured a Queen being pissed at The Doctor.

See what I mean now?

When they do off world plots, like the Satan Pit, they do them brilliantly. And at least they are going to different times in the past. In fact, I like those ones where they go into the past. And the future. It's just that this guy can go anywhere in the galaxy at any point in time. So why does he keep hanging around modern day Earth? I know he has a fondness for humans, and the set department probably doesn't have the money to make alien landscapes every week, but they should have some off world/alien plots. All I'm saying is leave the humans alone for a bit and show Martha some of the other wonders of the universe. Unless they were all destroyed in the Time War. That would actually explain alot. :-?

In "Tooth & Claw," the Doctor was trying to land in 1979 or so on Earth, but ended up in 1879 instead.

I liked the randomizer that the 4th Doctor used for a while. Even if it was just used to keep away from the Black Guardian for a while, maybe he (or should I say, the writers) could start using one again just for the hell of it.

Yeah, it worked so well. You know, for a "randomizer", it sure as hell wasn't "random" enough to take the Doctor and Romana to Skaro and Earth and wherever else it was they went during the seventeenth season. No wonder JNT's first moves was to chuck it.

It's our sad duty to report the death of one of Doctor Who's most prolific writers, Dave Martin. He was 72.

Working with long time writing partner Bob Baker, Dave wrote eight stories from the Classic Series, including The Claws of Axos and anniversary tale The Three Doctors.

Martin may, however, be best remembered as the co-creator of K9, the metal dog who proved such a hit last year when he returned in School Reunion. He's also due to star in his own animated series soon.

Before Doctor Who, Baker and Martin had previously worked together on several stage plays, before breaking into television with scripts for police drama Z Cars in the early 1960s.

According to reports, Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. He is survived by his wife and three children.
