Yes, the manga wasn't too kind to most of the villains. I think what Naoko was going for was a preferred development of the protagonists over the antagonists.

But you do gotta admit that the manga did have its shining moments and did dwell on some things that the anime pretty much skipped over. Regarding the villains again, in cases where the anime focused on some villains and not others, the manga did develop those villains that the anime somewhat ignored. In particular, Queen Metaria and Master Pharaoh 90. Both of which pretty much got shafted in the anime.

Metaria did little in the anime other than speak and be used as a power source for turning Mamoru evil. Master Pharaoh 90... was not a character. He was just a big, tenticular ball of blackness that was basically a living explosion and barely made any real appearance at all, being instantly killed shortly after his debut.

In the manga, both of these characters were protrayed as the true masterminds behind their respective villain groups. Both were sentient, frightening, and almost god-like in their protrayals. In all honesty, I was impressed by these two in how so much better they were than their anime counterparts.

RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:Mamoru? I liked him. Kinda take or leave, but he's a good guy. Got the almost obligatory tragic past going. ;)
Glad to here that you're okay with him. Lately, I've been coming across others who claim just the opposite. I've even encountered those who seriously hate him with a passion. And they also highly prefer Seiya or Prince Demand, or anyone, just as long as Mamoru is not with Usagi.

I, on the other hand, do like Mamoru (he's my favorite SM character, after all). I like all three verisons of him that I've seen (anime, manga, and PGSM) equally. Sure they each have flaws of their own, but in cases were one fails, a different one succeeds. And where that one fails, another succeeds too. And so on and so forth. He's not meant to be perfect. If he was, he'd be far more boring that his current self.

And, not only is he (or at least his manga version) based on Naoko's ideal man, but he's also her favorite character too. ;)

I actually preferred Pharaoh 90 being more mysterious and vague in the anime. ;) Made it seem more dangerous and 'eldrich abomination'. But yeah, Meteria got more in the manga, that's true.

Most of these people either find him "dreamy" or refer to how he was protrayed in the anime after he finally believed Sailor Moon when she convinced him that Wiseman was using and deceiving him, and how he tried to protect her from Wiseman during that moment. But for me, I don't care for him much. The only time I really liked the guy was when Saphir was accused of treachery he tried to here Saphir's side of the story... only for Wiseman to instantly kill Saphir and then Demand then cried out his brother's name and then carried away his body in his arms. But other than that, Prince Demand was just... decent.

1. Who here has read the manga? What is your opinion of it? How would you compare it to the anime, or even PGSM? If you haven't read it, would you like to?

2. What is your opinion on the character of Mamoru Chiba? Do you like him? Dislike him? Think he's okay? What do you think of him?

Been a while since I bothered to check this thread, glad to see it is doing so well.

1) I've read thru the main series, and Sailor V. The manga is decent for what it is. I enjoyed collecting the original releases, flipping between the books in hand and online translations. I was going to get the English releases, however by the time they started to come out, I was using that cash to buy other series.

Against the anime: Both had strengths and weaknesses. For the good, the manga covered a stronger narrative due to being more concise than the anime, while the anime was able to spend a bit more time to develop the characters. However on the other side The manga (IMO) felt crippled in the later volumes, almost as if while she knew where and how the show should end, she just wanted to move on. For the anime, some of the filler episodes were just crap.

Against PGSM: well... honestly... I can't compare them, the storyline and other elements are just too different. It's just like if a power ranger comic was started without the intention of making a live-action series thus works on stories and idea that wouldn't translate over, so when a series is made they need to make dramatic changes across the board. That said PGSM is a guilty pleasure, and if only the North American companies felt that it could be brought over with hacking the crap out of it (anyone seen the original Saban plan for a live-action PSSM, nasty stuff) it would be nice to see reach a larger viewer base.

2) Tuxedo Kamen Sama. I liked Mamo-chan, I just feel that by Supers, he was just treated like an extra, and I was really disappointed by his treatment in Stars. My favorite moment for him was when he showed up in the S movie pretending to be Santa before revealing himself.

in other news, here is Haruka with Megatron.

:BANG_HEAD: That. Was not. Saban. That was some other company called Toon Makers. That promo vid may be more widely known by the nickname "Saban Moon", but it's just not the right term becuase it's not the right company.

And yes, it looked... wrong on so many levels.

It makes the DiC dub look like an Adult Swim anime dub.

Almost 12 years on and still...... :BANG_HEAD:

True, it was not made by Saban, but lets go beyond the basic wikipedia entry, that glosses over the situation, to see why Saban is always burned by this.

It was produced by Toon Maker for the Renaissance-Atlantic bid for the rights from Toei. Renaissance-Atlantic however is a production company that only has one major show under it's belt. Power Rangers They worked on MMPR in conjugation with MMPR Productions for Saban, the company producing it.

It is simple enough to say "oh fans misunderstood" but the fact is Renaissance-Atlantic (yes toon maker made it, but it was at R-A discretion) would not be able to do it all themselves, hense why even thou they have been involved with power rangers from MMPR all the way to RPM, they aren't the company that people think of.

While R-A was possibly large enough to handle the full production and producing of the show had Toei accepted their bid. Most likely it still would have required distribution channels and handling, which they did not have set up themselves as Saban was already handling that end of things with the power ranger franchise. Due to this, if the show had been made Saban's name would still have been on it.

That is the reason that it developed the "saban moon" name shortly after the video was shown at Anime Expo. Not because some people simply made a mistake and/or misunderstood, but because fans at the time were already aware that people were trying for the rights and knew of the business relationship between R-A and Saban from the very beginning. They were in the know and used that name because of the connection and the obvious saban/sailor wordswap.

Regardless it was horrible and I'm glad I had to miss AX98, or I might have been in that room, and poisoned myself against PSSM for the years that followed. But between attending the two following years and staffing AXNY it was still a topic then and it's amazing that this long after it still seems to be a point of debate, despite being discussed as much as it in in the years following it.

And this one just one of the many reasons why I prefer the Yume arc of the manga over the SuperS anime. While SuperS put most oft he spotlight on Chibiusa, the Yume arc centered around her, Usagi, and Mamoru. The Dead Moon Circus was treated as though they were his enemies of the past, threatening his former kingdom, as well as focusing more on his illness that wasseemingly glossed over in the anime, not appearing to happen until the end of the series. Not to mention the fact that the Golden Crystal, which became his crystalin the manga, did not follow the same suit in the anime and had Chibiusa be the one to use it.

As for what happened to him in Sailor Stars, his ambiguous death/lack of appearances did help convey the drama Usagi was going through with her being both separated from him and pursued by Seiya. But I still didn't like how he was just cast aside like that with the Starlights taking up a role similar to a cross between his role and the Outers' role in S.

I couldn't read the Mixx/Tokyopop manga because I couldn't bear reading the dub names or the countless mistakes they made with it. :BANG_HEAD: But I had other means of reading it and got through the whole thing with little difficulty.

The ten sidestories are
  • 4 of Chibiusa's Picture Diary
  • 3 Exam Battle Chapters
  • Lover of Princess Kaguya
  • Casablance Memory
  • Parallel Sailor Moon

Looks like Italy is getting a DS game to accompany their Sailor Moon revival.

Namco Bandai Games Europe 1/4/11 News

Basically says that the game is set to launch "next Spring" on the Italian market. Gameplay involves one battling monsters, solving puzzles, and customizing one's Sailor Senshi outfit.

Note that, because this is an Italian game, Kunzite is referred to by his Italian dub name.

Any chance of it staying in the original Japanese format (no flipping!) and using the original Japanese names instead of like "Serena", "Rini" or even "Bunny"?

Thinking about it more, since this is the first time Sailor V is being officially released in English and never had any dub counterpart, chances are that it's translation will be a faithful one and the same could be said for this new rerelease of the Sailor Moon manga.

And if the manga gets a faithful retranslation, then I'd say there's nothing to stop them from giving the anime the same treatment should it return here as well. ;)

Kodansha USA has announced their release of the 2003 reprint editions of the Sailor Moon manga! In addtion to this is the first-ever American release of the Codename: Sailor V manga! That's right! Sailor Moon is BACK in the U.S. (no word on the anime yet, though)!

I'll be tickled pink if they kept these:

- The original Japanese names
- Their original genders. Zoisite and Fish Eye were both actually effeminate males
- Transliterations that can result in puns. The Amazoness Quartet for instance: CereCere (Ceres), PallaPalla (Pallas), JunJun (Juno) and VesVes (Vesta)
- And for the anime: the original kind of relationships! Haruka and Michiru come to mind. :x
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Jelze Bunnycat =:3

Looking for:
- TR Furos (Hardhead's head) and Crashbash (lost him :()
- PotP Punch head
- TR Galvatron right arm (the gun one)
- CW Brake-Neck/UW Wildrider, CW Offroad
- TR Twinferno & Grotusque
- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

I'm just hoping for as few changes as possible. The old dubs by DiC and Cloverway were terrible.

FUNimation has been trying to get he rights to a redub for years. And now that so many other countries have been getting their share of this global revival, here's hoping for the U.S. to fully get in it just as well.

I just realised I'm discussing Sailor Moon, on a Transformers forum with a fellow fan. How weird is that?

What I think is the most faithful of dubs is the German one: only name changes (Usagi to "Bunny" and the atrocious Quartet names SeleSele, ParaPara, and BesuBesu) and attack names were called out by a generic word and "Flieg" (Fly) or "Flieg und Sieg" (Fly and Conquer) for finishers most of the time. The laziest has to be Dutch one, as it's based on the German one, down to the German original opening!

I think the one dub that was actually worse than the English dub was the Korean dub.

Thanks for the news Sabrblade. For the record, I'll be buying each one as it comes out. :D Ah, Sailor V at last!

And here's hoping the anime makes a triumphant return as well.
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

Well if this is a decent release and seeing it will be handled by Kodansha themselves it should be literal translations, then I can finally retire my original Japanese release set for these.

Until more details arise I'll be causally optimistic.

Once I ran an Anime festival with over 6,000 attendees. Now... not so much.
