The Original Movie: It's worth WHAT?

Postby Sherade » Wed Nov 28, 2007 4:09 pm

Alright, here's the spin.
So, a while back I snagged the original Transformers movie on the original release tape (where they cut out the "Oh ****" part) for a few bucks.
Recently, I looked at the new price guide, and it was listed as worth $80.00.
My question is, is this even remotely plausible, or do I just beleive too much of what I read?

Yer kidding, right? I picked up the VHS version of the movie about 12 yrs ago..the edited one...for like $5....and yer saying they're asking $80 for it now?? *falls outta chair!*

I need to verify!

Sadly, I didn't buy the book, but I'll look for some if you can't find it.
I need to verify!

Price Guides are useless.

They can say something is "worth" whatever they like - whether you'll find some one actually prepared to pay that is another matter.

Things are only worth what some one is willing to pay, and I can near guarantee no one will pay $80 for a poor quality VHS version of an edited movie that has since seen so many DVD releases (esp. here in the UK) of any possible version available.

So don't go planning how you'll spend your new $80 yet :P

I know how price guides work...my ex-husband and I used to sell sports collectibles, so nuff said there

As for the movie, I had no intentions of selling it! I still watch it from time to time! I still enjoy it! But the idea of it going from what I paid for it back in the day to what some collectors' price guide is saying it's worth is a staggering amount. Kinda makes me laugh to think about

I can only guess the quality of an original realease VHS tape by now. Definately not worth $80. I have a re-issue VHS I got in 1996 or so that is hardly even watchable now.

That's why I like DVD's. No Tracking to adjust.

Actually, wheteher or not you choose to beleive me, it is perfectly watchable, not so much as even static.
Only beef is that you have to rewind it all the time, which isn't anything new for tapes.

Actually, I found a flaw. In the part where Magnus is telling Blurr to alert the others, a static streak blinks for about 5 seconds.
But I don't think it's much. If I could transfer it to a DVd, i'd upload it and show you, but I don't have any means of such...

Still not bad considering it's age. My newer copy has many more flaws than that. Mind you it has been watched around 50-60 times.

I dunno how many mine got before I bought it, but I've only watched it twice, since I have the 20th Anniverary DVD.

Does it not run at all now? I heard on the radio that if you smear peanut butter on it and wipr it off with a soft cloth it can help restore CD's And DVD's. Probably want to use smooth PB. :P

That's a scary idea! I dunno about all that..I'd be afraid to smear that nasty stuff on MY DVDs and CDs! Peanut butter is hardly fit for consumption, let alone to get to honor to grace my precious shiny-discs-of-joy! ;)

It runs, but it has wonderful repeat and jump sections throughout, it's only Bionible though, so it isn't that bad.
And I duon't think I'll get any PB on it anytime soon.

I still have videos of G1 (with GI Joe) that my mom taped in the '80s. Quality is a bit poor since there are six hours per tape (unlike purchased tapes that are in slow, high-quality mode). Still, aside from a couple of bad movie tapes that snapped, I haven't had any VHS wear out (even after 20 years).
