Yes, they take a percentage of the money you earn from selling the kit.
Also, I'm going to say BS on him working on 3rd party stuff.
I can confirm what Swindle has said. Nick's someone I consider a good friend, and he is quite forefront in the 3rd party design business. Believe me when I say, a massive chunk of the 3rd party figures released by some companies are designed by him. He's a good man and a hard worker in the freelance designer field, and it's totally his perogative to withhold his work if he so chooses.
It's not like you couldn't learn how to use google sketchup and do it yourself using his sketchup pictures as reference. If you're really keen on that design then why not try getting in touch and talking to him about it?
Not to derail, but I feel this needed clearing up because he's a solid guy and has done a lot for all of us (even if most of you don't know it). Obviously can't say what pieces since it could well come back on him, and none of us want that.
I can already see you've been introduced to WSF. Don't be fooled by the low price, it really is only good for weapons and prototypes. If you plan on buying figures like the thugger twins or other figures/heads I recommend white detail or higher. You might get away with WSF polished for most things tbh, the finish is near factory quality. Never bother with the coloured plastics, you'll get far better results dyeing the parts when they get to you.
I read that you've found out how porous WSF is, this is part of the reason it's so strong. It's not a very pure plastic, absorbs a lot of paint and leaks it later. A rookie mistake is to paint it straight up; use a primer first to help prepare the surface, and remember to wash the parts thoroughly with soap and sand (if not polished WSF) before painting.
Shapeways is not something you should just jump into head first. Honestly, the best thing to do is sticky this thread and fill it with advice and links to shapeways stores, since there is quite a lot to learn about the different materials and preparation techniques that can really help you get the best out of your purchase.

Also, I am really interested in the Calloway Customs Punch/Counterpunch upgrade set. The hands have the thumbs down the middle so that they look good in both bot modes and the head is supposed to be much better.

Has anyone ordered this? I would love to see some examples of how it all looks assembled and painted.

I'm trying out the "polished" quality of material. I can let you know when I get them how they compare.

That's why I'm sticking with single-piece accessories such as weapons. I don't trust moving bits at all from shapeways.

Yes, I got two pairs of Leader class Optimus Hands,
and they are completely worthless in everyway, the wrist just flops, can't even hold it's own weight.
On the otherhand.. I also bought a pair of Leader Class Iron Hide hands, and they are superb, other then the finish. They can hold just about anything including strong magnets.
and they fit the figure really well, plus they still allow the FWI-2 Blades to be inserted into the palm extremely securely.
so all in All, I'm going to shy away from Shapeways, but I can highly suggest the Leader IH hands. While you have to cut his arms to fit them, they are fantastic, and a steal at the price.
for now, I'm gonna pre-order the UFO leader OP hands.
They look much more refined. Plus they have viedo of the hands holding the Jet wing guns.

Hey, I know this is late. Still, you're wrong to call BS. I wouldn't intentionally jerk you around. The guy is legit and has created designs that a lot of us probably own one or more of. Or will soon enough. He ultimately wants to work with Hasbro. That's why a lot of his work and credit is hush hush.

You want a Drift sword, get this - it's cheaper than most things on Shapeways, and it's a finished product. I have this myself and it's pretty dang cool.

But a question, I just got FE Starscream, and I love him to pieces.
Problem is, SOFT RUBBERS!
So, can anyone vouch for this upgrade kit? I only really need the head antenna and missiles, and maybe the blastor for shits and giggles. Its by Fakebuster, take a look: http://www.shapeways.com/model/461649/tfp-fe-deluxe-starscream-set.html
Has anyone bought this? And if yes, then how good is it?
I wont be replacing the knee spikes if I buy it. Ide have to remove, like, 3 pins and a screw. per leg. no thanks! But the other stuff looks good, and with the option of red as a printed color, how could it go wrong?

Spotted this tasty looking upgrade over on Shapeways this morning, not sure if its already been mentioned in this thread?
http://www.shapeways.com/model/676300/tempest-full-set-for-rid.html
Created by Shapeways member TecromDesigns, these are an upgrade for RiD Prime 'Arcee', giving her a new 'Tempest' head and a pair of blasters!
Very tasty she looks too!
