And Sly, you still haven't answered why you chose to ask for critiques in a TF forum, instead of an actual writer's forum where you can get proper professional feedback for your stories. Where's the best place I can get my book published? I talked to someone from one place, but they want me to pay $700 per story. Is that a typical rate, or is that too damn high?

I'm only familiar with full-sized novels, and the last places that still accept traditional unsolicited manuscript submissions are Tor and Baen. IIRC, they don't accept anthologies or short stories. But those aren't for self-publishing anyway; you'll have to go through an editor before being considered for publication.

If you're shooting for e-publishing, why not go for Amazon's direct Kindle publishing? I think Counterpunch did something similar. You should shoot him a private message and ask.

Or, you can give Bob's Lulu a try.

And this place you were talking about, what do the 700 dollars pay for?

I'm on writingforums.org. Give it a try. It's 100% (over)active. Not sure why that didn't show up on Google. What search term did you use?

Anyway, you can try Createspace, but depending on what services you need, it can go upwards of $2K. I went with them and used a Kickstarter to fund the story.

Ugh. By this, I hope you mean you posted a request asking for critiques and not the story itself. If you posted a good chunk of the story itself, that's considered first publication. Won't mean anything if you're self-publishing, but if you go through traditional publishing, you've just given up first publishing rights. And most publishers want first publication rights.

I've considered both LuLu and Amazon, but I'm leaning towards Amazon. The $700 is for advertising, I'm guessing. And that's the problem I'd have if I published it with either of those two; advertising.

Yeah, advertizing is your number one enemy when it comes to self-publishing. The more charismatic authors have little trouble selling their books, though. I guess if 700 dollars is what it takes to get your story some publicity, I say go for it. No idea if that's a reasonable price, though. Maybe you should google the company and see if these guys are legit, and if they're any good at what they do.

Have you considered expanding your story into a novel? That way, you can actually submit it to either an agent or a publishing house. Sure, you'll have to be REALLY good to catch the editor or agent's attention, but if you do, the publishing house takes care of almost everything else (though it still never hurts to self-advertise). Also, you stand to make more than you would with self-publishing.

I considered Lulu too, but when it came time to weighing pros and cons, Createspace came out on top of the ones I considered. They publish through Amazon (they're owned by them), but that's not to say publishing straight through Amazon isn't the way to go either. Let me know how it works out, wherever you go.

SlyTF1 wrote:The $700 is for advertising, I'm guessing. And that's the problem I'd have if I published it with either of those two; advertising.

Advertising is always the dilemma. The good thing about Kickstarter is it's its own advertising (you get the word out about the campaign and the product at the same time). But no matter what happens, advertising is necessary and a good way to spend money.

SlyTF1 wrote:The website said I get to keep every right. If not, they lied. And even if I go in and edit the story after posting it, would it still not be eligible?

You retain all publishing rights and ownership of the material (with exceptions like title, third-party properties you mention, etc.) when you post something on the Internet or when you sell publication rights (unless there's a stipulation in the contract).

Here's a quick-and-dirty rundown.

First publication rights is exactly what it sounds like: the right for someone to publish the material first. So first publication rights, in a sense, is a publishing house's right, not yours, since they'll be the ones offering you money for the chance to use that right. It's your choice to give that right to whatever publisher you want, but it's that publisher's right to be the first if you sign on the dotted line. When they pay you, they're buying first publication rights from you. So you haven't given up any right when you post something on the Internet, since you technically don't have first publication rights in the first place (unless you yourself are the publisher). You've just given up the chance to sell first publication rights to someone else.

So when you post a story or at least a good percentage of it, you give up the chance to sell first publication rights to a publisher, since by posting it on the Internet, you can't then go to a publisher and tell them, "Hey, you there, legitimate publishing house, I'm giving you the chance to publish this first. Pay me for that right," because you've given it to the Internet as a whole. It's out there already. If you post a chapter or an excerpt, you're okay. Just how much is considered okay? I guess that's up to the discretion of the parties involved. Some publishers might be okay with you posting 10 percent, some might not be.

So the site didn't lie: you've retained any right you already had. You still own the material. You just gave up first publication rights if you posted it. And a lot of publishers won't consider something unless they get first publication rights.

But, again, if you self-publish, that's not an issue. Just know that, if it gets out that you've given it away somewhere, you might lose sales. How does the saying go? Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.

Just a quick question, Me Grimlock. Do excerpts (as in the first 3-4 chapters of a novel) count as a first publication? It's not uncommon for authors to offer excerpts as a "free sample" to potential readers on their site or blog.

I have six short stories. I want to publish each one individually, then combine them into one collection. That'd be the "novel," so to speak.

If you know **** about English you must be aware that this isn't a complete sentence. However you respond to this will contradict something you've said before.

The clue is in Va'al's response when he said:

Because I'm not being offensive. If you're offended by what I say, then the problem lies with you.

Um, it's a sentence if I say it's a sentence.

I haven't yelled or cursed anyone out. How is this not civil? I've been civil from the start. I can do a whole lot worse if I wanted to. If I were truly being "offensive," you'd know.

No, it's an incomplete sentence. Just because you say otherwise doesn't change anything. You don't have command over the English language, and if you think you do, you're just proving you're as full of yourself as we're all claiming.

Civility is a matter of respecting the people you are talking to (or typing to), be it them, their opinions or their contributions.

You do not have to be swearing, insulting, or attacking to qualify as uncivil. Passive-aggressiveness is not civility. 'I can do a lot worse' is not civility. You are treating the people in this conversation with contempt, even when some of us are giving you help and tips on how to succeed in your project.

I simply can't understand why you all continue to engage with him. He's clearly a lonely neckbeard whose only joy in life is to maintain an Internet persona which is probably the direct opposite to what he is in real life. I seem to remember him saying that he works at a cinema? He'll probably reply to this post chewing on the popcorn he retrieves from his hair each night. Ignore the prat and he'll soon get bored.

Well, I've found the legitimate responses in this thread to be very informative. Writing a novel is one of the few childhood dreams I still cling too. The others I gave up on in favor of the practical reality life presented me with. It's really not bitter out, it's just what it is. Trust me, I have no delusions of grandeur about ever getting published. I want to write it just write it. Well, more like finish it. I've been working on it for many a year.

As for the attacks on sly, I agree with BC, why bother? He obviously doesn't care about your replies, so don't engage him in that manner. Everybody who has ignored his idiosyncrasies has gotten a fairly decent reply from him. ignore them if you must, but why clutter the thread with pointless replies that the intended recipient will never care about, and only encourage more of the same?

I've been respectful and grateful to the people who have actually helped me. Everyone else proceeds to try to judge me and tell me who and what I am. I'm not trying to buy into that. If I see it, I'm going to cut that **** to a halt. It's as simple as that.

I considered Lulu too, but when it came time to weighing pros and cons, Createspace came out on top of the ones I considered. They publish through Amazon (they're owned by them), but that's not to say publishing straight through Amazon isn't the way to go either. Let me know how it works out, wherever you go.

I just started looking at Createspace. Do they have anything for advertising, or is it just self publishing?
