You think people are your friends.....................

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Postby 0ctane » Fri Mar 02, 2007 8:50 am

ok my friend's friend said to me, and i quote

you need another hobby mate maybe on the lines of burning all your toys to start off with

so i told him:

yeah but in a couple years time these will be worth more than PS3 on launch day. Its called investment dude (i know i know, i don't collect because of financial gain)

Ok a checklist of things i like that transformers delivers:

Giant robots/mechs: check
Cars/vehicles/architecture: check
Ninja ability to become something else: check
Broad range of characters and personalities: check
Happy childhood memories: check

I'd say that logically, i should like transformers

besides i'd much rather go around burning Xbox 360s (he likes Xbox 360)

unfortunately after that i got a message from my other mate telling me that he had fallen down some stairs at work and broken his ankle... divine retribution for being an ass? maybe.

No one has ever critisised my hobby before (possibly because i'm a 6 foot tall martial artist) but i understand why people get angry about it because they treat you like a child, like they are better than you. But i think its a psychological game where they are not happy with themselves so they need to find "faults" in others.

I'll just keep on doing what i like doing. :)

I am not sure why you would choose hair salon hair. Those places smell...I don't like how they smell. I'd recommend setting up a shop and offering hair brushing. I'd go. I love my hair getting brushed, but then again, it goes down to my waist.

I like having my hair brushed too.It goes just past my shoulders. This one girl at this hair place does it really well. And she's real cute too. And by the looks of things, not much older than me.

I don't go to hairdressers. they like to cut my hair short. Probably employed by folk like discharge. My braid is 21 inches long... I am proud of this... No one can tell me to cut it off and get mature, I'll grab them in my braid, wrap it around their necks and hang them by it. :P

No kidding eh. Your braid is made of awesome. I agree, there is NOTHING immature about it.

Back when I was a kid (TF came out when I was in Grade 6), I not only made the mistake of saying I like TFs, but that I like Starscream. One kid when I was in Grade 8 (a real aft-hole) once told me he saw Starscream b**f***ing Thundercracker, and the girls kept asking me "Why do you like Starscream?" So one time at a school dance they had the DJ play a song dedicated to me, "who likes Starscream, one of the Transformers!" (yes the DJ said that out loud  ). I don't remember what the song was, but all as I remember is it was garbage.

Over the years, I learned how to not care what other people thought, including my own family. My brothers would say to me "When you turn 30, are you still goona like Cartoons/Transformers/[insert toy name here]?" And I said YES. I WILL still like it. And you know, I still do. :P

My mom sometimes complains that I've got too many toys (but the TFs are far outnumbered by the fishies lol), but overall I get more grief from her about carrying around Koby Fish everywhere than I get about my TF collection.

People really need to realise that only a handful of TF's will ever appreciate in value.

Optimus Prime use to be one of them, but thanks to numerous reissues look how much he's worth.

Armada etc figures? Won't be worth much either. 10 years down the track very few BW figures have appreciated in value.

You may as well just enjoy them for the toys they are unless you're planning to buy up a bunch of MIB Fortress Maximuses, and even then I can't see him appreciating much in value these days considering his current value.

Yeah i know that but i said it to shut him up because there is some truth behind it like how armada/energon unicron became more expensive when primus was released. the originals always increase in value and thats not just transformers.

why do people keep transformers MISB? after all, the point of buying a TF is to transform it. if it stays in 1 form in a box it might as well be an action figure. why do people buy 2 or 3 of the same transformer? because they appreciate in value.

i collect because i like the concept of transformers and it incorporates everything i like. If they appreciate in value thats just an added bonus, hence why i wrote

I think he was just offering objective criticism to your statement. I wouldn't take it as a personal dig. Burn knows what he's talking about, so I would recommend taking it more as advice rather then slander.

Not to mention that considering i've worked for an accountant for 10 years, been a collector not just of TF's but antiques for even longer, I know all about things that appreciate and depreciate, and frankly, I don't see TF's being a line that will return much in the way of financial gain.

And if you don't do it, fine, but others do because they've seen the price of some G1 figures. That market is already beginning to go bust anyway so if people are in this for investment purposes, it's going to be their loss.

And you're just lucky your friend doesn't realise that otherwise he would have blown your defense out of the water. :P

I disagree with your assessment completely, Transformers are an excellent investment for monetary gain. Ebay alone is proof of what people will pay for the stuff. There are many Transformers from BW and on that are worth a great deal of money. To simply say G1 toys are the only viable option for investment and even that market is going bust is totally incorrect.

Transformers are like many other collectables, as long as there is someone looking for what you have, you will have no problem selling it for a certain price. Especially if said toys are MISB.

As for the kid having problems at school, first, don't pay any attention to the retards of high school, most teenagers are morons to begin with, they are usually the ones who think it's cool to do drugs and drink underage. All just idiots.

Ignore them, enjoy your hobby and your toys and if they say anything, tell'em to go F*** Themselves.

I see where you're comming from, but I still agree with Burn. If you look in a price guide, most TFs aren't worth the **** your wearing( after me bashing TF shirts, I realized I put on my Autobot shirt today. Aren't I the hypocrite) The only way people make any decent money off of ebay is by pre-selling items or buy selling MIB to the occational hardcore collector. I have a lot of AFA graded G1 stuff (beleave me, it's not easy to do living in Canada) and it's worth a lot, but mostly to me. If you look on ebay you'll find lots of Lots that have been on there for ever because people maybe want one or two items in the Lot and don't want the other 50 figures because they either already have them or just don't like them.

But I do agree with you about people buying something that means something to them. For me it was finding Downshift on eBay for 5 bucks. Sure I paid another 5 for shipping but it wsa worth it to me because I love the figure. I was willing to pay $50 for it, but I was lucky enough to pay low. Six or seven years ago you could sell any Tranformer on eBay and make a good chunk of cash, but with all the Re-issues from both Takara and Hasbro that has thus dwindled.

I think it depends on what you have, I live in Canada too and a great deal of the Takara and US Transformers are very difficult to come by. I don't understand the AFA thing, it makes no sense, they take a TF worth about 50 bucks and inflate it to over 300 and that's all they are doing. I have tons of AFA grade stuff I'm sure, I just don't send it off to them to get it appraised at an inflated price.

Hell I can remember when RiD stuff was going for stupid prices on ebay. Thank god I have most of that series now. The problem is the last few I need MISB or MOSC are all really hard to find.

Where abouts in Canada do you live? What do you still need from RID? I know that Scourge and Team Bullet Train were bastards to get a hold of. I still think Rail Racer is the best combiner out there today.

Maritimes. Both Scourge and Rail Racer were not made available here at all. I have them both now.

I still need:

Air Attack Optimus Primal
Bruticus
Megabolt Megatron (Green on in Armada packaging)
Smokejumper that other jet
Ruination in Urban Camo colours
Yellow Build Team
Bludgeon
Dinobots that were in Armada style packaging, all of them.

I'm pretty close to having all of RiD, it's my goal to try and finish it.

I even have some of the harder to get stuff like Cryotek.

I remember seeing Cryotek on sale at Zellers for $5 because no one wanted it  Alot of the stuff you mentioned as never released in Canada. It has been a flaw up until Cybertron, where we've received everything. Runiation Camo, Yellow Build Team, Bludgeon, Other Scourge, All 5 Dinobots were all never released up north as far as I know. I've seen them at shows, but for rediculous prices. I didn't think that RID did the Smokejumper two pack, I thought it was cancled. As for Bruticus, I'm 100% sure there's still a few on a Zellers shelf somewhere near here. Megabolt was gone quick and Air Attack Op always had a damaged box around these parts so it ended up on clearence many times.

Those are all good examples of what to sell on eBay. Items that were hard to find elsewhere in the world. For Christmas my step mom bought me E-Beachcomber because I've been looking for it for about 3 years now. She ended up paying $80 US for it. Not worth that much in my eys, but I'm still thankful she picked it up for me.

Energon Beachcomber, I should have nabbed that the one time I saw it on the shelf at walmart. It goes for over 300 on ebay now.
