Zombie RPG

Postby GrimSqueaker » Wed Apr 25, 2007 6:28 pm

Is anyone here interested in starting a posts based zombie rog-i have just reread The Walking Dead and i am itching for some zombie action. It would only require a half dozen players (although more would naturally be welcome) as well as a games master to plan exciting stuff, operate zombies and npc's.

i wanna play, do you?

Just to be clear, we'd be fighting zombies right? Not roleplaying them? :-P

I'm totally into this. What are the details?

What does ROG stand for? I'm assuming it's something like role-playing online game, something like that.

here be answers!

-Yeah i have found several, but they are often way way to complicated, so i thought maybe we could set one up here.

-Yes of course we would be playing as survivors, not zombies, with the exception of the games master, who will be incharge of placing hazards (such as zombies) and of course controling NPCs(who may also be hazards!)

-ROG was a typo, i ment RPG, but i like the sound of ROG for this type of game so yeah, lets keep that term- It is now a Zombie ROG (Roleplay Online Game)

Can i assume that u 3 are interested? If we get maybe 2 or 3 more characters we can get started, other characters can join later as other survivor. There may even develop seperate camp sites, etc.

Firm details will follow later, but for now lets just say that i am following the continuality of The Walking Dead, so it will follow the development of the characters more than super monster zombie combat (although i aint oppossed to some Resident Evil style nastiness)

Zombies general characteristics are as follows, although it is not set in stone, and they might always surprise you!

The zombies that wander around and do not just remain in the same spot are often referred to as "roamers." The zombies that just remain in the same spot not doing much unless provoked are referred to as "lurkers." However, these are unoffical terms adopted some; other survivors use different terminology — iothers refer to all zombies as "biters," and some even comments that it's silly to differentiate between two kinds of ghouls.

Zombies cannot die conventionally. They can only be killed by destroying or removing the brain, even decapitation won't work. The zombie must suffer some form of brain trauma.
If the brain is intact, heads of decapitated people will reanimate, though the bodies will remain inert.

Any human who dies with their brain intact will become a zombie, even if they have not come into contact with other zombies.

Reanimation can occur anywhere from minutes to hours after death; people killed by zombie bites tend to reanimate more quickly.

Zombies will attack and try to feed on humans and other animals, such as horses. Animals do not appear to reanimate as zombies, judging by crows often depicted with the masses, that do not attack the living.

Zombies will not attack each other.

Zombies don't need their organs. They can survive severe damage and decomposition.

Zombies do not have flowing blood. All they need to survive is an intact brain.

Though zombies consume the flesh of their victims, they can function without eating for prolonged periods of time.

Zombies can survive being frozen solid.

Zombies are attracted by loud sounds, such as gunshots, but cannot differentiate between forms of noise, like human talking and zombie grunting.

Zombies differentiate between humans and themselves by smell. They can be fooled by rubbing zombie "filth" or innards over one's body.

Zombies will not attack humans if they have been fed to their content, but will revert back to their aggressiveness when they grow hungry again.

Zombies occasionally will venture to places familiar to them from there previous human form such as a mall or park

I'm interested.
Just wondering, are zombie's the only undead walking around? Or do the survivers also have to deal with stuff like ghouls or mad vampires etc. ?
I'm not familiare with the "walking dead" thing. Is there some short summary somewhere about it?

Not sure how this works. Is it an airborne virus? In that case, why isn't everyone dead? Otherwise, I don't see how someone who hasn't had any contact with zombies can turn into one.

Supernaturally reanimated zombies?

IIRC, in the NOTLD genera of zombie movies, every corpse fresh enough to have physical coherency was reanimated, including those who'd been dead and buried for a month or more already.

Necromancy and apocalyptic-like events were plots for the dead to reanimate long before the pathogen-zombie was ever imagined.

I have to confess not remembering a lot about NOTLD (I know, I know, *the* zombie movie). I haven't seen it in years. I remember that those bitten died and were reanimated, and those already dead were reanimated, but not those who died since the dead were reanimated. But my memory is mostly bad. Can anyone let me know if I'm wrong?

I believe, though, in DOTD, DOTD, and LOTD, only those that were bitten got to be zombies, not those who'd died otherwise. And if we're branching into non-Romero stuff, I'm positive that the DOTD remake, Resident Evil, and most of the ilk had it that way, too. I don't remember if Shaun of the Dead touched on it.

I'm not sure about The Walking Dead.

I realize I'm trying to put logic to a scenario where zombies can exist. By no means am I saying let's have it my way. I just thought it made more sense this way, and gives the world a little more flexibility. (There's a certain suspense and fun about coming across a corpse and not knowing if it'll try and eat you or not.) I'm willing to play no matter the rules, though.

Zombie bites are toxic, a bite will kill and reanimate you much quicker.

It is unknow whether it is biochemical, Virial, or magical.

And there is unlikely to be vampires, though maybe some freakish lab experiments, cannibalistic humans, warlords and other dangerous phsychotic scum.

AS for a starting point, i was thinking of maybe dealing with a paitent zero situation. Where the players begin in a hospital at the time of the first outbreaks, then have to flee adn deal with the growing world of the dead outside. Any suggestions on that theme?

Yep, as i see it so far, i will serve as gamesmaster, and how ever many people will be starting the game at the flash point where the zombie outbreak begins (well close to the beginning anywho).

I will start the players off with a description of the area, npc's, zombies, etc. players can then do whatever they want via posts.

Additional player specific information will be sent as a pm from me to the relevant players eg;if someone reads something/see something/or deduces that only they will know the information will be pmed to them-what they do with it will be up to them-like wise if a player wishes to share this sort of information the can state it outloud, or whisper it to the other players by simply posting that they are whispering to another player, and then sending the information via pm.

I would idealy liek this game to centre around character development, suspense and a healthy does of good old fashioned horror-gore!

Any more questions, and could intrested peopel please pm me or post their interest here.

Thanks!

P.s. If u decide to play and then get bored or busy once the game has started-no worries, just let me know and ill see to it that ur character leaves the game seemlessly. The Zombies will apprehiate the snack!

That might be something for the future or a spinoff. I think, for the start, it's probably best to focus on the one monster.

Can we pick job professions, stats, backgrounds, etc.? Or will those be supplied? Or is this just a simple post-and-reply game rather than a full-on RPG?

Fair point, at least to begin with one problem at a time would be best.

I would really love for people to get as involved with their characters as possible-so it'd be pretty full on RPG although perhaps a little more user friendly then the hardcore ones. Id would also see figurative (numbers and tables) stats as being pretty moot, a simple indicator of your characters capablities should be included in the characters description-since there arent any superpowered characters it'll be pretty obvious that the bodybuilder will be stronger than the accountant-the teenager is more agile than the 87 year old, etc.

As for jobs, well some of them will be dependant on the starting possitions of the characters-but i am entirely opn to all susgestions.

I thought that perhaps the game will start in a hospital at the very beginning of the plauge, so most people would be members of staff at the hospital-this still leaves a lot of scope for characters professions aswell as their histories-its simply down to your imagination!

No fear of that there is loads of choice! You ever working in a hospital? There are tech staff, maintanance, accounts, securtity, "domestic" (that means cleaning puke and blood!), clerks, cheifs, legal, administration, drivers, mechanicics if there are enough ambulances (oh and it is a really big hospital so there should be loads of ambulances), cleaners-of course not everyone who is in a hospital is staff, there are visitors, and paitents, priests, and legal aid.

a pretty wide variety me thinks!

Oh and i just took a quick head count, not including myself there are at least 6 interested people-if ye all wanna start making up your characters then we can begin-anyone who isn't able to partake from the beginning can also join in at any stage-although it would probably be best to pm me first, to make the addition of new survivors more fluid. Sounds good. We should find a web space for this. Something we can use forums like this one so the storylines are organized. Why I say this is because a) it's nice to have a home of your own, and b) we don't want to overload Seibertron with zombie threads.

We can have different threads that allow access to only certain players (those whose characters are "there" for the events going on--like a truck thread, a schoolyard thread, an army base thread, etc.) unless we go by the honour system and say just don't read threads where you shouldn't know the information. And, if you stumble on something you shouldn't know... no big deal. It's a game.

Plus we can have a rules thread, a character info thread, a signup thread, etc.

Or am I thinking way too big?

I like the way you are thinking-but yeah, just a little too big, for now. Lets consider this the alpha version, once we get a couple of dozen players then we can unleash a whole world of undeath.

Which accually suits pretty well for me. As i am graduating in a couple of weeks and can accually devote time to stuff like this!

Sure. Just thinking future plans then. I know a place we can get hosting for $7.95 a month, for a year, or $5.95 a month for two, which includes forums exactly like this one. If we get, say, 12 interested players, we can divvy up costs and find ourselves a place. I can put together a small web site and away we go.

For now, we can go el cheapo and just get a free Yahoo mailing list.
