Sunbow's Bio
In the wake of the 9/11 Attacks, the American president appealed to the Autobots for their support in holding the perpetrators accountable. Not anxious to interfere in human politics, Optimus Prime assured the American public that the Autobots would help in efforts to rebuild but remain aloof from any military ventures. Two Autobots, however, requested permission to join the American military in Afghanistan. When Optimus Prime refused, Sunbow defected from the Autobots and flew to the nearest US Army recruiting office. The Pentagon deferred accepting him until Optimus Prime reluctantly agreed--but with the condition that Sunbow serve only a three year enlistment contract. Finally, all parties agreed and Sunbow shipped out.
On the battlefield, Sunbow's courage and ability eventually earned him the Silver Star. Away from combat, Sunbow provided a significant boost to the morale of his human comrades both in the Afghanistan theater and elsewhere. After his tour ended, Sunbow declined reenlistment in preference to rejoining the Autobots. Sunbow explained that as a Cybertronian, his ultimate allegiance lay with Optimus Prime. He had never truly understood the value of duty and loyalty until serving with human soldiers. His decision was initially controversial among armed forces personnel. Nevertheless, as a sign of his continued concern for his former comrades, Sunbow exchanged his wartime camo paintjob for the bright yellow of the "Support Our Troops" ribbon.
Because of Sunbow's extensive experience in high-human-contact (HHC) situations, Jazz immediately selected Sunbow for the PrimeTime Project. In the show's first episode, the camera crews followed Sunbow as he traveled around the United States speaking at fundraisers for veterans' causes. Sunbow spoke candidly about his experiences of war and commented on his remorse over having to kill human beings in combat. Memorably, Sunbow commented that fighting Decepticons is far easier on the conscience. "Although the Cybertronian War goes back millions of years," the Autobot told PrimeTime's human producers, "your conflicts make it seem totally black and white." Sunbow's reflections proved to foreshadow the events of the next several episodes as he and the other PrimeTime stars were forced to repel several Decepticon attacks.
Many fans of PrimeTime have designated Sunbow as the de facto leader of the so-called "Celebots." His natural talent for unifying the diverse personalities of the PrimeTime Autobots in battle has surely not been lost on Optimus Prime, either, although Prime has not himself appeared on the show so far this season. Fans speculate, however, that Sunbow's exterior confidence and self-effacing manner mask deeper wounds from his experiences in Afghanistan. Surprisingly, Sunbow has developed a close friendship with his ultra-extroverted comrade Starstruck. A large portion of the fanbase has expressed hope that Sunbow will initiate a romantic relationship with her although a sizable contingent of fans are vocally opposed to the pairing.
