It's official, after nearly two decades, Disney is taking their toy license from Mattel and heading to their biggest rival, Hasbro. This is big news because it's the end of a rather lucrative partnership between arguably the largest multimedia juggernaut, and one of the biggest and longest running toy manufacturers in history. This will be a big win for Hasbro, however, because now Hasbro will produce toys for all of Disney's properties and acquired entities, including Marvel and Star Wars and now Frozen!

Hopefully this will lead to more collectibles such as Takara's Disney Label, where you get a bit of both worlds, all in a rather neat package. With this new partnership, it would be fair to assume that this will be just as lucrative for Hasbro, which in turn works for us, because the better Hasbro does, the better Transformers will do, the happier we'll be.

Dude, this is REALLY good news! Like I said in the article, Hasbro already produces toys for Disney in the Marvel and Star Wars lines. This will help net them Cars (which is HUGE), Disney Princesses (which is insanely huge) and keeps all of the business between the two of them. Hasbro and Disney in a straight up partnership, no one else, and all of that Disney funding being funneled into Hasbro? That's good news for Hasbro, which is good news for us.

Granted, we'll probably see more Tranformers/Disney crossovers, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Not even.

So, thinking aloud: anyone wondering if a more solidified partnership like this could be the twisting of the thumbscrews needed to surface some old MARVEL TF stuff?

damn that sucks, was hoping disney would cut ties with hasbro & take star wars & marvel elsewhere. But i feel bad for the disney collectors out there, now their stuff is going to be cheaply made & overpriced just like ours. Only way id ever be happy about this is if this partnership would produce a gargoyles/transformers crossover, will never happen cause disney doesnt care about gargoyles but still would be cool.

If Disney buys Hasbro, I'm going to be seriously pissed. I have this foreboding sensation like this is Disney's first step in acquiring the rights to Hasbro. I don't like it.

It feels like you're attributing industry-wide measures of cost cutting and quality lapses to Hasbro alone. Hasbro is doing a great job with Marvel & Star Wars right now, IMHO - bringing back Legends? Starting a 6" Star Wars line? You kidding?

Remember those rumors about Disney possibly buying Hasbro that popped up a couple of years ago? I was pissed back then when I heard it. However, after having seen that Disney only did good things for Marvel since acquiring it, I feel a lot more at ease with the idea. It may happen, it may not happen. If it does happen then that means a huge influx of funds towards Transformers, which could result in better quality figures. If it doesn't happen, then that's still fine by me because then I won't have to liken buying an Arcee figure to buying a Disney Princess figure. XD Seriously though, it wouldn't make too much of a difference one way or the other, for me anyway.

In the end it's all about money, these 2 business giants will do whatever they want, regardless of what consumers think. I've given up on collecting new figures that are released mainstream, but I do hope this means their quality gets better. The only thing I am actually looking for now is that since Disney owns Robots in Disguise, maybe this partnership will pave the way for them to release it on DVD or even Blu Ray sooner or later.

Like a lot of people i'm not sure how i feel about this. As a child, i hated anything Disney as the bland, insipid crap it was. In recent years i've come around somewhat when i see that they do seem to care about their intellectual property and have high quality standards. I will always think mickey mouse is creepy though.

This is EXACTLY the kind of reaction everyone had when Disney bought Marvel, and look how that turned out. All this means is that Disney merchandise will be produced by Hasbro. They're not being bought, nor are they merging. That would be SLAGGIN' AMAZING, though! Imagine it: Hasbro, now able to utilize Disney's massive funds, united under one brand with Marvel and Lucasfilm! And just think of the crossovers! Dear God, the crossovers! =P~

I've heard of this news before. It would be fun to see Disney doing exclusive toys at both DisneyLand and DisneyWorld like do repaints of TF fgiures with Disney elements or do packs with certain TF characters with Disney characters like Optimus paired with Mickey and Megatron with Pete. lol

Safe to assume that now would be a good time to buy a bunch of Hasbro stock. If they're able to produce all the toys for Disney, they will have a secure future.

This is big, I don't think anyone can realize just how big at this time. I honestly thought when the license ran out Disney was going to pull SW and Marvel and bring them to Mattel. Two concerns I have is that Hasbro doesn't make diecast cars like Mattel through Matchbox so I'm curious how cars will work and as my sister pointed out Mattel is known for making fantastic dolls so I'm curious how Hasbro will make the Princes'. Perhaps they'll license the license to Integrity Toys who make the Jem dolls.

On the surface this doesn't look bad. It's a win for hasbro. My problem is Disney. They are probably the most insidious company out there. Eventually I bet they will try to acquire the rights to Hasbro's properties through some kind of partnership.

Is this bad? Depends.

the people at Marvel apparently have a little autonomy. Look at Marvel branded items. There's no trace of Disney. It's not Disney's Iron Man.

Look at the new Star Wars stuff. Each tag as "Disney" on it. To me, this means Disney has far more control over Star Wars than it does Marvel, perhaps by their own discretion or not.

I just don't want to see Disney's Transformers please. I mean will every decent movie and item end up being owed by one company? That's my fear and although it's probably unfounded, they do control 2 out of 3 of my childhood interests.

The reason is simple, back when Disney bought Marvel it was because they wanted Marvel's customers. Back then Disney had the image of being super kiddy and super girly, to the point that nobody had any faith in them producing something that did not fit the young girl's demographic and when they did try it it was seen as disgusting and weird because "Disney". Remember all the backlash they got for Pirates of the Caribbean, despite it being so successful?
Marvel, however mostly appealed to teenage boys, or at least that was their image. Disney bought them and promised to not interfere at all and that the only thing to change was that Marvel would now have Disney money for all their projects, because Disney really liked what Marvel was doing.

But now Disney has a different image, and Star Wars is a much more mainstream property, so I guess they decided to just straight up brand it as such.

Then again, Marvel was a own company and not just a franchise like Star Wars. With Star Wars you only ever saw, well Star Wars, there was no "Lukas Films' Star Wars" or anything the like, Star Wars was simply the most well known property of another company.

But Marvel evolved as both a company, and its own brand name, so if Disney removed the Marvel Branding from something and decided to put the Disney Stamp on it instead, people might not be interested in it.

I swear, if Disney revamps John Carter and would re-release it under the Marvel Banner, it would be a hit.

Phineas and Ferb Transformers crossover? I'm not really a fan of P&F(though from what I've seen there's quality), but I really enjoyed the Marvel and Star Wars crossover. Specially the Star Wars crossover. "Hey, I found this perfectly good robe. All's that's wrong with it is it has this hole in it right here".

Imagine if they crossed over with G1 like that. It would be epic.

Most of you misunderstand me. It's disneys underhanded business practices that worry me. And yes, Disney bought Lucasfilm. Not just Star Wars. So they bought a company and branded it as their own. In 10 years kids will assume that Disney was the sole created of all this awesome stuff. It's effective but it's underhanded and I don't really like it. It's a way to gain a monopoly without the legal problems.

Yes, I know they bought Lucas Film, and Lucas Arts and Skywalker Sound, but the thing is neither of those entities, save for Lucas Arts reached a similar kind of brand recognition as Marvel.

When someone says Lucas Film, people go "What's that?" "Oh, they made Star Wars? I thought that was George Lucas. Oh wait, that was his company?".

But if you bring up Marvel, people will go "Oh yes, comics, Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, Ironman, ..." and over here some will even say Batman because somehow some people think all SUperheroes are Marvel.

Star Wars was known as its own brand, and not as a property of another brand. That's what I'm getting at.

The only ones to really view one of the companies as being an iconic brand of its own are gamers when referring to LucasArts, and even then it's more along the lines of past glories and not a consistent level of quality. The only reason Disney even bothered with buying Lucasarts and Lucasfilm is to get full control over Star Wars, the rest is just dead weight that came with it.

And by the way, all companies eventually merge everything under one banner, think of DC Comics that folded the Carlton Comics Superheroes into their main comicverse, or more recently with the "New 52" incorporating the Wildstorm characters into the main rooster as DC characters.

But Disney hasn't done that with Marvel and likely will never do that, hell after buying Pixar they put them in charge of all of their animation and still keep them separate because Pixar is widely recognized as being the makers of brilliant animated movies.

There isn't even a hint of Disney in a Marvel Comic at all, I just checked with Amazing Spider-Man 1.5, the legal print only mentions Marvel and its divisions as being the owner and copyright holder.

There are have been changes creativly that may or may not be disney. But honestly my point is this: Disney wants to buy up as much nostalgic intellectual properties as it can. The reasons for it are monopolistic.

We hate monopolies when they are oil companies are software developers but we shrug when it's entertainment?

I'm not saying that is what they are now. They aren't buying transformers. But man, I bet they want to.

Disney does like to change things. Remember how Spider-Man used to be married?

I do.

Just saying, the company is more interested in buying and selling the work of others than creating things on their own anymore. I guess I'm just a romantic but I remember when they had the illusion of making art. Yes, entertaining art, profitable art, but art nonetheless.

Wait you're blaming Disney for one more day? that's a new one. Plus Disney do make their own stuff like wreck it ralph. Disney are a very long way from having a monopoly on entertainment. I mean would Warner, DreamWorks, Fox, Blue Sky, Illumination, Aardman, and the rest really let that happen.
Re: Disney Princesses ditch Mattel for Prince Hasbro (1610173)

You know, my first thought upon hearing this was the possibility of Disney switching all of their Lego products over to Kre-O, but of course that's even less realistic than them buying Hasbro.

No, I have a feeling their relations with Mattel have been souring for a few years now. My first inkling of this was when Ever-After High came out a year ago: Mattel's original characters who're the offspring of fairy-tale characters. A logical expansion of the success of Monster High, and part of the trend in the last few years of basing entertainment properties on old public-domain stories and myths in order to minimize pesky intellectual property lawsuits. Since most of the E.A.H. girls are daughters of P.D. versions of Disney Princesses that Mattel's already been making toys of for decades, Disney surely saw this line as being somewhat parasitic; a way of bypassing licensing fees.

Maybe this is too much of a stretch, but when Disney called their Monsters Inc. prequel Monsters University, I honestly think they were securing rights to the name to make sure that Monster U. couldn't be the place the students of Monster High moved on to after 4 years. I thought that was just a warning-shot/bitch-slap to give Mattel a "friendly" reminder of who they've been licensing half their bread and butter from for the past few decades, but it seems to be much more than that now. Mattel's inability to crank out Elsa dolls fast enough to meet demand may have just been the final straw.

This announcement coming so close to Hasbro's abrupt loss of a controlling interest in the HUB makes sense too: surely this cozy partnership paves the way for a few Hasbro shows to gain wider audiences on some Disney channels, yes?

Which brings me to something I don't think has been mentioned yet: regardless of your opinions on this deal, Bronies are partially to thank/blame for it.

Seriously. Expanding a line of crayola-horses to include a fashion-doll spin-off that also appeals to adult collectors is no mean feat. If Hasbro hadn't just succeeded there, I doubt Disney would trust them to handle their princess stuff, what with most of Hasbro's girl's properties being miniature, playset, and animal based.

And again, we have Monster High to thank for paving the way for Equestria Girls, since that line largely expanded to randomly-rainbow-skinned dolls once they got through the most iconic "kid-friendly" monsters. Ah, the battles between toy brands are as epic as any fought on Cybertron, no?

In an Equestirian town, a dead end world
The East End boys and Equestria girls...

Dude, that was One More Day, and happened years before Disney bought Marvel. And yes I remember how he used to be married, I also remember how the writers managed to do f**k all with that, I also remember how they kept trying to work around the marriage to do anything. Remember when MJ was thought dead for like two years, only to come back and then say she doesn't wand to live with him anymore and went to live on her own, only to come back just before One More Day? Then After all that Disney bought Marvel.

What creative changes are you talking about? Are you talking about the character development and constant change of status quo? You know, like Marvel has been doing since day one? Are you talking about the recent diversification, you know the changes that won't even stay a year?

Have u open a marvel comic these days, the arts blows and the storylines in hulk, wolverine, capt america just to name a few are a joke.....i dropped all the marvel stuff im reading, and if u think that has nothing to do with disney owning them ur crazy dude what billion dollar company would buy another without their input? i wouldnt..........they soften up to get more readers and money bottom line.
its all about money money money.........

and i have no faith in what star wars will turn out like...........yea lucas last 3 sucked but disney sucks even more, john carter anyone?

I've read my brother's old marvel comics and annuals, some dating from the very early days. They seem a lot more serious now. Of course plots are subjectto opinion, but Disney bought marvel after the first iron man movie.Alsoa billion dollar company will buy another and not force input if said company was already making cash. Why mess with the golden goose? Maybe comics got softer as a whole because the majority of fans wanted it. Clearly this is the case as marvel are still going.

Also guardians was an awesome movie, what was your problem specificly?

You come off as a very jaded person who doesn't like Disney for undisclosed reasons or reinforces the kiddie stereotype on Disney.

The john Carter comment, so every other movie company is perfect? *cough*Green Lantern*cough*
