That's what I was going for.
But seriously, as a military enthusiast, Hasbro can't make this any better, it's so gorgeous.

He's obscure enough that it'd probably come from FunPub rather than Hasbro, but with the original Ultra Pretender toys falling victim to gold-plastic-syndrome, he could use a sturdy update.

That'd...actually work. It'd feel like they were milking the mold a bit too much (if it was a retail release), but I digress; incredible idea.

I didn't think this mold could have made me admire it more than i already do. THis is a fantastic remold and it, like Springer and Blitzwing, will be bought on sight

That's not a diss to Springer. I'm thinking they released Springer first to get sales going.
Either way, however it worked, absolutely impressive figure. Dang.

The fact a detailed artwork appeared on metropoex's box might lend support to your theory that this was the original mould. I'm sure there'll be 3rd party 4 blade rotors but I appreciate the change they made.
The fact 2 out of the 3 triple changers had the same alt moulds irked me as a kid and was probably one of the reasons I never tried too hard to get springer.
At least the decepticons had more variety

It does need some rotorblades then, though...
Posted by Geminii on May 13th, 2013 @ 3:17am CDT
Sandstorm seems to win when it comes to accessories having a place in every mode, though. It's a pity we couldn't get Springer's car mode with Sandstorm's VTOL mode, the rotor assemblies folding up into AA launchers or something instead of giant rear wheels.

Actually, more plasusible would be that the general base of the mold was developed first, and the character specific details were developed on the side at the same time. Think of as the evolution of pretooled heads: one base mold with two main head molds to switch out.
Posted by Cybertronus on May 13th, 2013 @ 6:02am CDT
That's just not right. However, Hasbro did a smart thing on this mold. Besides the new head they reshaped a little the figure giving Sandstorm a more modern look. So he's not an helicopter... But its a VTOL mode.
The only thing I still don't like is the skinny legs on these two figures. Sorry Hasbro but I just don't
Having said this I would give these figures an 8.5 out of 10

I see a lot of retooling there. It looks like just the basic shape is common but a lot of parts were switched out. Either that or they did a hell of a job on the repainting.
Posted by Jelze Bunnycat on May 13th, 2013 @ 8:48am CDT
*drools* So getting both. Despite the similarities they look distinct, and that's what retooling is supposed to be all about.
But what about poor out-of-scale-on-his-own Broadside?

No. Springer would make a better Armada Cyclonus than Sandstorm.

Ah well.. it was my first thought when I saw him, lol. Anyways, they both get close to Cyclonus in that mode in my opinion

AND I have to say that revisiting the original mold... that's one dated looking helicopter. If anything needed an updated altmode, that's a candidate.
Also, if they do a Pretender repaint in gray and red, I'm in for that too. The VTOL looks amazing. Bowled over.

Bravo, Hasbro.

Seriously thought you were legitimately calling it crap for a second.
Posted by gothsaurus on May 13th, 2013 @ 2:53pm CDT
Okay, so seriously. If they wanted to include this in their convention exclusive GI Joe crossover line of repaints (hint hint hint), I'd take this is green and/or gray with Joe/Cobra logo as well.
Yeah, so, seriously. I'd take a full line o' army green classic vehicles from truck to plane to copter. Just don't make them change INTO the Joe characters and we're good. Big mechs are much more awesome than gangly awkward homages of Star Wars/Avengers. Those are so much fail.
Any other great repaints you want to see out of these guys? Pretenders and Duocons are on the table. Any others?

if both characters parts are on the same mold, I'd love them to use the majority of Springer (alt mode and such) with Sandstorm's head and vehicle front, for Battletrap, if they do him.
edit: oh, and preordered.

Sandstorms Aerial mode looks sick, and the vehicle mode is growing on me.
This is the first time i'm really wanting both remoulds.
There are some issues present in both that sorta turn me off, and thats the legs. Back kibble on sandstorm looks rough, and the big wheels are kinda wierd (since the overall car body seems of a certain depth that suggests normal wheels appear at the rear, but then giant ones interupt that flow).
What I think is going to look rad on Sandstorm is the gun that can pivot in what looks like all directions. The buggy mode will look awesome with the gun pointing off to the side. Speaking of the terminator robot reference, the VTOL craft does look similar, and the vehicle being a buggy mode fits that post-apocalyptic look.

I agree on all counts
Except for one thing, if you look at the robot mode pic at the gun, you can see a similar mounting point to the one springer's uses to mount underneath the copter mode. I don't think it can rotate, i think that's just the round sculpting right underneath
