The hotly anticipated leader class Concept Art Megatron from the Studio Series line has been found in Canada. The sightings started in Quebec Walmarts but have spread across the country since. The release date for the US is still March, at the moment. Below you will find comparison shots for scale along with a review that compares this toy with past examples of leader class Transformers to see how the leader class budget is spent on this toy, and for you to see if it is worthwhile or not.

Thanks for the review! It's beaten into us to death by Hasbro & fans alike that class is a price point now. It's something's I've come to accept after a few false start by Hasbro (Shockwave, Astrotrain, ER Prime) that hurts their case but there are also a few that made it (Hot Rod, Megatron here).

Some people argue this is a bad Megatron for its poor alt-modes. I can see their point but in-hand I don't quite agree. It still IS kind of the worse tank mode since CW, I don't like that triangular hollowness in the tank turret and its obvious "folded bot arms" look, but the tabbing is solid and that made it a fun tank to play with. I also like the jet's odd look that feels like it belong to the modern Diaclone universe, and it's a fan-mode dream. People have come up with the requisite Gun mode, alt-tank modes that's closer to the sleeker concept art look. It can also do a Gerwalk and I've come up with a Robocop's ED-209-like attack drone mode out of it. It's a legit Six-changer.

And this Megatron's hands... OMG I think that's the most articulated pair of hand for a mass retail figure. I always hated how Hasbro ignored the engineering of their figures' hands. They always looks bad & lazy unless a figure comes with 2 weapons accessories. An open 5mm hole for a hand is just ugly (one of the worse is SS86 Blurr/Kup mold due to the thinness of the fingers). I just wish Hasbro will do this for all Leader & higher class figures.

The price of a Titan/Commander/Leader here in Canada is such that I rarely do pre-orders anymore for these classes (unless they're Dinobots and this Megatron). It's such a big jump in price difference from a Voyager to Leader, and Leader to Commander. I feel in general Hasbro would put more effort into a Voyager than a Leader. Tarn & Jhiaxus got fingers and superb articulation while most Leader don't. Every Dinobots got a missing weapon. Why? How!?

Commanders are so much more expensive (without deep discounts like we saw from Skyfire, Skylinx to Rodimus, prices I haven't seen drop below $100CAD since) now but at least in-hand, I feel Hasbro designers have put near maximum effort into making the best version of the characters as possible (the lack of hand engineering is still a constant issue) and I'm happy I got every single one of them.

SS Leader Fallen is a joke. Next to no improvement on articulation and transformation from the old Voyager. Only good for its size. Not worth it at all.

I transformed CBBM Megatron into his tank mode and I had to look up the instructions for a single step. Otherwise, the thing is tighter than a nervous newlywed on her first married night. You can also feel the density of everything, without any hollows anywhere. He also look better in tank mode in person than in videos.

I'll do the jet soon and after that, I'll improvise some fan modes.

Yeah, he's small, but he's meaty and I like it.
Worth the full price? I guess it is.

I called it a Six-changer Plus, the "Plus" being him having 2.5 tank variants.

So far, he's a:

Bot
Tanks (1. official, 2. Emiliano's concept (legs twisted sideways), 2.5 Emiliano's concept but the front of legs facing up so the treads are on the ground. I'm not spoiling the fun for you to experiment)
Jet
Gun
Gerwalk
MEG-209 Attack Mech (think Robocop's ED-209)... I like this mode the best.

Extra Bonus tank modes: Have the jet's cockpit half-folded out like Blitzwing. Another is have Megs' head pop out to pay homage to his ROTF Tank mode. Both are worth a chuckle.

As for the price, I look at it this way: he doesn't look out of place next to Yolopark's AMK or next to ThreeZero MDLX, in both looks & articulation. Dude's a gymnast! Only thing really missing is an ab crunch and cost less than half of an MDLX. He's solid. No hollowness. He's a steal looking at it from that perspective. Take half an hour to do a weathering and little detailing touch up and he'll look like a $100~$150 dollar 3P figure.

I hope his hands' articulation is the next standard for Leader & up, while Tarn/Jhiaxus for Voyager.

Another try at a robot that turns into a tank and a jet, and another fail.
Seems it’s just hard to make a tank turn into a jet.

G1 Blitzwing is still surprisingly the best at it.

If they are now doing Concept art figures, does that mean we can get those Transtech figures we saw for the sequel to Beast Machines?

Probably not in Studio Series since they didn't actually get any media behind it (outside of some club stuff), but they could probably do something in the main line.

You know, with a few minor tweaks, that could be a FOC/WFC type of Blitzwing.

In this case G1-ification would be an improvement. That old concept looks terrible in the 2 vehicle modes. The robot mode looks halfway decent.

I know G1 nostalgia is a powerful thing, but is this a widely held belief?

As someone who only got into Transformers around the Beast Wars era, I always thought G1 Blitzwing was pretty bad. The jet looked good from the top down but mass of junk under the wings was visible from any other angle (which IMO is the same for pretty much every jet mode we've seen in a jet-tank triple changer since) and the jet cockpit just brazenly sticking out in tank killed the whole look for that mode too. And of course the robot mode suffered heavily to accommodate the other two.

Totally subjective of course, I'm just curious as to which one is generally considered the best mass-produced attempt at a jet-tank transformer.

I agree. Having once had G1 Blitzwing in my collection, I was quite familiar with its strengths and weaknesses. The jet cockpit sticking out of the front of the tank is the most infamous. But for me, the weakest point was the jet tail fins serving as the robot's only 'feet'. They wouldn't hold in place, they were thin, loose and wobbly, and completely unsuitable for holding up and balancing the figure's weight. For all the flaws of the new Legacy version, they at least fixed that issue.

Though that only raises the question in my mind that many bring up when Legacy Blitzwing's flaws are challenged. When the issue of the jet cockpit at the front of the tank is raised, defenders often point to the G1 figure and say 'G1 accuracy' was paramount to the designers. But if that's the case, why didn't they also have the jet fins as his only feet for the same reasons? Why was the flaw of Blitzwing's dinky, dainty feet worth fixing for the Legacy version, but not the horrible jet cockpit sticking out from the front of the tank....?

I think you are mixing up toy and toon. G1 Blitzwing had actual feet in the cartoon along with the cockpit in tank mode, the cockpit's appearance in the toon tank mode is what gives it a pass for some. I would have been fine without it if it meant a better jet mode.

Widowmaker is from AOE Concept art (like BB Megatron), and was an initial concept for who would eventually become Stinger. Same alt mode, even! A very left field pick, but I'm down for it! She'll look really cool with Stinger and the other KSI bots.

We actually have a LOT of concept art for the character, but this is one of the main ones:

Thanks to consistently accurate leaker JTprime17, by way of our own Seibertronian EvasionModeBumblebee, we have a list of what may be all of the Studio Series retail releases for 2025. No, that's not a typo, it's the end of February 2024 and we already know what's coming out next year. Once the shock wears off there's some really interesting things listed here. For one we seem to be going back to the Bayverse movies in a pretty big way! Hatchet seems to have found a new home after the Target release was canceled, Que is finally getting a new figure, Age of Extinction Optimus Prime is getting updated at last and the Stinger mold might be coming back with a retool as the unused concept fembot "Widow Maker".

Gamer Edition is continuing with the expected Starscream repaints and Ironhide. Studio Series 86 looks to be giving us the first four members of the Constructicons in a mix of Voyagers and Deluxes (the rest will surely be coming in 2026), and package refreshes of Grimlock, Perceptor and Jazz. We've also got a few listings for TF:One, Rise of the Beasts and another A Level Optimus Prime.

Full list can be seen below and be sure to discuss it in the Energon Pub forums!

Interesting. I watch the films, but dont know enough about the Behind the scenes to differentiate. I just figure they wanted to use the mold as many times as possible ;) .

For instance, I have no idea if Novakane from Freezer was planned (like the above Scorponoks) or if Hasbro just wanted to recolor the tiny Terrorcon.

I always thought the CW Constructicons were in scale with the SS86 Dinobots, so I figured if we got SS86 versions of them, it would be just a repackaged CW Devy. But I guess these will be all new, with better articulation and better individual bot and vehicle modes.

And Shockwave is always welcome.

However, the previous Optimus Prime figures from SS have all been voyager sized, so I wonder how much bigger the leader AoE will be, or if it will be pretty much the same size with more parts.

I'd wager more parts. Let's face it. Of all the Prime versions we've seen, that was the most organic and streamlined. I think having the extra parts may help with accuracy. I'm not expecting a Leader "sized" figure, just an accurate one.

Rodimus Prime wrote:However, the previous Optimus Prime figures from SS have all been voyager sized, so I wonder how much bigger the leader AoE will be, or if it will be pretty much the same size with more parts.

I am hoping and expecting that he will be the same size in robot mode as the others but would have extra engineering to make the transformation work without a lot of kibble.

DOTM QUE LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

And Hatchet will return! Too bad we'll have to wait another year, but at least they're coming! It's also a weird coincidence that there was a seven year gap between Crankcase (in 2011) and Crowbar (in 2018), and now there will seemingly be another seven year gap until the last Dread, with Hatchet in 2025.

Thought I'm through with G1 after Swoop & Sandstorm (I'm not refreshing the minibots) but damn... Devastator! Now are we getting a redo Predaking in a year or three?

I've heard rumours that in Transformers One the characters will gradually upgrade and evolve from those leaked, not all that transformer looking designs that have done the rounds through to something that looks more like normal Transformers, I'm guessing that the A-Level Deluxe Optimus will be that first body.

The MV 6 Bumblebee is curious, I suspect either it is a redo of the Beetle to be more accurate to the film, or a take on the Camaro design (since it has a distinct robot mode to the 07 version).

I'm curious about 86 devastator, apelinq and sentinel Prime

The previous A Level Prime was listed as TF8 (TF:One) so that's possible, though I wonder what DEV is supposed to mean. Devolved? Developmental? Deviation? Dark Energon Variant? Guess we'll have to wait until next year to find out. If it has nothing to do with TF:One then the first thing that came to mind was Devastation.

DEV for Devastation, as in the game. All cell-shaded and very G1 would be my bet.

I really hope Apelinq gets some proper retooling and isn't just Leader Optimus Primal in gray.

That would be a huge bummer
I'm hoping for the retooling aa well, I'd imagine it'd just be both heads and the arms?

I'm guessing Hook & Long Haul will be Voyager pricing scale maybe perhaps for the extra bits but I would hope that they will incorporate all the parts/bits this time round.

If they're doing anything resembling scale then Hook will probably be a pretty long alt mode with proper crane arm and simply too much to fit in a Deluxe package. Long Haul will probably be pretty similar to the Titan version and be extra sturdy to support Devastator and maybe include his forearms and fists. I doubt we'll see full integration of parts this time aside from maybe Devy's head and crotch cover.

Definitely interested in seeing what he'll look like.

I completely missed that legs are also Voyager pricing but I can't believe the torso pieces could be anything bigger like leader class but with the recent triple change anything goes I guess :-(

DEV Optimus Prime for the 10th anniversary of the game makes sense. Hopefully we’ll finally get those conehead generics and blue and yellow Battlechargers shortly after. They’ll probably be DEV Constructicon repaints too.

I played around with SS CABMM Megatron and he's definitely the new RiD Dragon Megatron. This small ting pack so many fan modes!

Image

I know people already gave him a gun mode, but I bet there's more than one way. Here's mine.

And here's a Mech Warrior / Front Mission style mech:

I guess Scrapper and Mixmaster being Voyagers is going to be a similar case to SS86 Hot Rod: Deluxe Scale but Voyager-level engineering. They are the legs holding up the entire combiner after all. And they might even have proper Ankle Tilts for the big guy! Meanwhile Bonecrusher and Scavenger only need to have a single peg or catch flip out in vehicle mode to form the G1 accurate Shoulders and upper arms for Devastator.

Assuming they really go for Scale with these Constructicons, I could see them being Deluxe sized, with some combiner kibble.

Maybe Hook will be a Leader or Commander Price Point and include the Head, Forearms, Waist & Thighs, and Chestplate. Sort of similar to how they handled Motormaster recently. If there is a solid piece made just for Devastator's waist and it doesn't need to worry about transforming to form it, Long Haul could just form the Stomach and be his smaller G1 Design and in scale with the others!.

Here I was thinking my collecting was winding down and :HASBRO: decides to drop a new Constructicon set.

Damn it.

Wellp, still no shipping notification from Amazon regarding my BB Concept Megatron. It still keeps saying this though:

Which has me feeling this way:

So we'll see I guess. I am not confident.

Pretty exciting stuff on the list!

Que at last! We can finally complete the DotM Autobot cast! (we just need Ironhide with new guns to be fully accurate)

Apelinq, thank goodness they are doing him too.

Hatchet finds retail! Thank you! Dreads can finally be complete!

Doublepunch will be nice, I will take repaints of the scorponoks for army building purposes.

AOE Prime will probably be a lot like Shockwave or DotM Megatron, pretty dense to give priority to engineering. Here is hoping they find a way to make that work, I have always loved Knight Prime!
