In the 1980s, Optimus was the fan favorite. When he died kids locked themselves in their rooms, parents wrote angry letters, etc.
The uproar of a possible death of Bumblebee would be similar, but could it be worse, I can only imagine what would happen.

However, he seems to have never been put in any serious danger, the execution scene was the closest to a BB death we ever got.
