according to nasa documents, books & science channels. they wanted the rocket/space ship to be as light as possible so it could lift off the moon afterwards.
the first rocket/space ship that went to the moon was composed of 3 parts. as soon as the rocket was in the moons atmosphere above the moon. the front part of the rocket seperated from the back half. the back half stayed in the moon's atmosphere. while the front part of the rocket went to the moon.
once the front part of the rocket was on the moon. when it was ready to leave the moon & head home. the front part of the rocket that was on the moon, seperated in half again. the bottom part of the rocket stayed on the moon. the bottom part stayed on the moon to reduce the weight for the lift off of the rocket into space. this was done to also save fuel.
while the top part of the rocket lifted off & went into the moons atmosphere to link back up with the back part of the rocket already in the moons atmosphere.
once the astronauts were aboard the rocket & went to the back part of the rocket. to reduce weight, save fuel & gain speed home to earth. the front tip of the rocket was released again with no passegeners on board & got discarded in space or fell to the moon.
