According to this article from the LA Times, the trio of writers who were previously in-talks to write Transformers 2, the sequel to this summer's blockbuster Transformers movie, have now signed on for the second film, a deal that could reportedly pay out more than 8 million dollars.
Also interesting to note that the article mentions the fact that director Michael Bay has already begun 'pooling together' digital pre-visualisations of Transformers that didn't make it into the first film, allowing the production of the film to continue in case of any work stoppage due to impending strikes in Hollywood.

Just the same, the three writers are already pooling their ideas to nail down the detailed story line while Bay has begun pulling together some digital pre-visualization robot designs that didn't make it into the first film. An added benefit lost on no one is that with a CGI-heavy film like this, the preliminary work provides an effective cushion if the writers (or directors and actors next summer) do strike -- effects crews can work ahead and compile action sequences during any stoppage.

Awesome! Things are moving real nicely.
The threat of a writer's strike in Hollywood has everyone running around to get this porject rolling so incase the strike does happen, then there won't be delayed by it.
If the sequal was delayed by a strike, it could be several years before the sequal come out or cripple the project to the point that all production would cease and the movie would never be made.

This leads me to believe that some of this "fanfiction" may be true and certain designs may be in affect.
As crazy as this sounds coming from me, I hope they dont stick with striclty G1 bots. I think all of TF fandom deserves a nod if this is to be a true trilogy.

It appears to me that the public has spoken. Doubts at first in regards to the first movie, but when it came out it got more attention then anyone probably could've imagined. The public wants more Transformers and to me, we're certainly gonna get what we want.

You have to admit though, that was epic crack.
But if they threw that out on purpose to get feedback, then maybe they'll take some elements and put it into the sequel. And I bet Bay is happy about the aircraft carrier being in there.Sure why not? Its a new continuity. There's already a G1 reboot anyway(IDWverse comics). But it all boils down to characterization in the end.
BTW I don't want it to be strictly a trilogy. Becuase if the sequel turns out to be epic, then they just wasted the first movie!
