What were the special effects in POTC 3?
300 was a period piece set in the 4th century B.C.; not much room for special effects aside from catapult-thrown stones smashing into walls.

I'll be real surprised if TF doesnt get the award, but Pirates 3 had some awesome effects too so its a tough choice.
Before CGI, people used props to simulate explosions and stuff.
But I wonder how many visual effects 300[ could have had. Maybe for scenes involving an insane amount of arrows, or ballistae firing bolts?

Erm....most of 300 was one big CGI shot...those backgrounds? Cgi, it was shot like Sin City. Howd you think they managed to put so many people on screen at once? How do you think they got the sky and everything to look that way? How do you think they managed to make all those arrows? The list is endless.
And as far as my comment towards Bourne goes, these awards are usually given out to the film with the best CGI effects, and Bourne didnt have any.

What about the sky in 300? Were there any scenes that took place during a thunderstorm?
It should get a nomination for best costume design.

Actually, there were. There was an epic scene of a huge armada getting smashed against the rocks during a massive thunderstorm, huge sea fully CGI animated, same with the rain and thunder effects, and thats not including all of the ships.
Are you trying to say that 300 didnt use much CGI here...if so...thats just crazy.
How the heck do you think they did most of those decapitations as well? Blood effects were mostly CGI, even the Spartans 6-packs were airbrushed on in post production!
300= most CGI in a movie this year. That said, it wasn't the best CGI in a movie this year, i think that award should go to Pirates or Transformers.

No.
The land scenes would not need much CGI, but sea scenes have always required special effects even during the days when toy boats had to be used.

Please...
The fact is 300 was filmed like Sin City: 90% cgi backgrounds, 10% real sets. Just buy the dvd and watch the extras, you'll be surprised.

He's saying that they required less because a template was already "there".
And yes, Sparta was a real city. History class dude.
As for the CGI, yeah, half the backgrouds, like the falling off the cliff one, were green-screened in real life, and CGI'd to the movie.

Stunt scenes typically involve special effects.
