G1 SHOCKWAVE

Postby dinojack86 » Sun May 06, 2012 10:44 am

I finally was able to find an affordable G1 Shockwave, in good condition compaired to most I've seen especially for being out of the box. Only minor wear on die cast and even the rubber hose is in tact (couple small cracks, nothing major). I had to buy the barrel separately but the point is I have a good functioning G1 Shockwave now and that's been probably my number 1 collector's piece I've wanted for years. For those that don't know, he's great!! One of the best Transformers toys PERIOD.

Ok so my question is does anyone know how much he went for when he was first released. I was born in 86 so I'm not quite old enough to remember G1 toys in the store (my first TF I remember seeing in stores were G2). Was he on par with a Voyager, a Leader? He is a big toy, stands about as tall as a Leader class (not quite but close). If they sold him today I would say he would be packaged as a Leader more than likely. Anyone know?

Props to you dinojack on your recent jem and ironic that I too am on the verge of getting my G1 SW this Wednesday from a local dealer! The box is barely decent but SW is in immaculate condition and I can't wait till I add him to my G1 fold. He was one of the few TFs I had when I was a kid (sad to say I eventually broke him) and my fav. I remember we went to Jemco (for those who remember-lol) and of all the TFs I could have looked at all I saw was Shockwave... :x . Damn I felt just like Ralphie when he first held his Red Ryder Rifle. Imagine if someone told you as a kid "you'll shoot your eye out" with your Shockwave? :))

Sorry for that sappy nostalgic moment. I was born in 77 but if I could guess his price then was between 11.99-14.99...anyone-anyone? I think he too would be considered leader class...?

According to this page, in '84 Shockwave was going for between $19.99 and $29.99, depending on location. That didn't change much the next year, though Christmas-time sales did knock a couple bucks off.

(Side note: Oh My God, I remember going to the West Mifflin Service Merchandise on more than one occasion when I was just a lad. So many toys came home from that place.)

Then again, with inflation a new $20 toy in 1984 would cost $45 now.

Congrats on scoring one of the best damned G1 toys made. :D I remember my Shockwave... before my cousin got her hands on it. :-( :BOOM:
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

My reviews of Transformers G1, one episode at a time. Stop by for a spell!

How much did ya get him for?
It's good that the hose is in good shape. I suggest keeping that rubber as supple as possible to prevent cracking. I use an organic grease that is formulated to keep rubber seals and gaskets from rotting that keeps mine from drying out and turning to dust. It works REALLY well.

I have to agree with the others. I had him as a kid but as with most of my stuff it went into the void. It is a great figure and I was lucky enough to have a wife that bought me one mint out of box for a wedding anniversary gift. They don't make them like that anymore.

So now as I posted earlier I got my hands on a Real McCoy G1 Shockwave but it pains me to say that it has one flaw. The right leg in robot mode while looking at him does not lock securely like the left leg. I almost have to tug on it a bit more so that it stays and allow SW to stand firmly. I did leave him standing while I'm away and I'm wondering if that was a good idea at about 4ft. off the floor. :-s I hope it doesn't decide to give way at anytime and fall to the floor...crap! :BANG_HEAD:

Does anyone know of what I speak of and offer up some ideas on the leg issue? :VEHI:

Do mech surgery on the leg involved. Check if the internal notch/peg that enables the locking mechanism is still whole. If worn out, well, you can apply some clear nail polish or filler to tighten it.

That seems to be the same problem on Megatron G1 too.

Your post brings back a very fond memory of my childhood. One day I was out sick from school and my mother stopped quickly at the drug store in the mall to get me something to take. After that, we made an unexpected side trip to the toy store (it was actually called "We're toys, Too") and told me she'd buy me Shockwave.

So, a kid home sick from school that has a kickass new Transformer to play with...

How awesome is that?
