Bootleg Classics Megatron repaint WIP

Postby mechajol » Fri Dec 28, 2007 12:09 pm

Lots of people loathed the original Classics Megatron's silly color scheme. As for me, the color ruined the toy for me. It was just too much - the yellow greens, the purples, the oranges...

When Jin Saotome came out with his excellent repaint, lots of people followed his example. Which is good.

I, however, can't afford to purchase and experiment on an original Megatron toy. I don't even know where to find one. So I picked up the bootleg which, surprisingly, has a much better color scheme in Robot mode.

Here's what I started with...

Red face, black eyebrows, gold highlights...

My challenge here is to improve on this bootleg, make it more G1, but deviating from the metallic silver Megatron that almost everyone did with their own toy.

What I did first was to detach the "wings" from Megatron's back. On the original toy, you have to drill/carve the plastic so you can pull out the metal pin that holds the hinge. The good news with this bootleg is that there's no metal pin! The hinge itself clips behind Megatron, so you just pull out the joint. and yeah, it can be replaced and detached anytime!

With the wings gone, I started to erase most of the gold highlights and the red face paint. This is what I got...

I have to admit, I very much like this look. Very simple, clean, and uncluttered. But this only looks better in pictures. The angle of the light and the time I took these pics, shadows brought out the details in the mold. Megs, although looking much better than with the bootleg paint application, looks like a big chunk of white plastic.

Image

The plastic color is good enough for me, so what I did was do some panel lining by giving Megatron some light washes. Thanks goes to my girlfriend who mixed up a small batch of paint for me to use.

Here's what I have now.

Bootleg Megatron has no lightpiping. I added red paint for his eyes. It's more obvious under brighter conditions.

I used a thin wash of gray acrylic, applied with a toothpick and cotton swabs.

Up next are the wings!

Won't that make the plastic even more brittle? How did you apply it? Cotton swabs?

no pics yet, but i just added a clear decepticon insignia sticker. bootleg megs now looks very much like his G1 cartoon incarnate, minus some red shades, of course.

the weather still has not cleared up for me to spray paint the "shell/wings"

brought this toy to the office, and so far, most of my TF-fan officemates gave a positive reaction.

That is looking much better. I like the mould, but the colours put me off getting one, so I'm hoping I can get the Takara version. And my skills aren't up to such a heavy repaint of that kind of figure. Love the megafan pic, it's like ko megs is going WTF is that???

How much red are you going to be putting on it?

not much red, actually. only the eyes are red. the maroon parts will be left, except for the wings/shell which will be repainted.

i prefer the maroon parts over red. i love subdued colors. :)

Looking good!

I've got the same one and I'd be very interested to see what you do with the wings.

Me, I'm leaving the gold, painting eyes red, painting face silver and the wings will be black with gold detail. Don't quite know what colour to paint the maroon detail on the main figure yet though.

I got mine on Ebay from a good Hong Kong seller. you can usually just search for MYM (KO Brand name) in transformers.
