ha! my upbringing was pretty close to yours. i had essentially the entire first season on a couple VHS tapes, which i watched endlessly. and like you i had my parents rent me TF:TM as often as i could. i never even saw seasons 2-4 until adulthood when rhino started releasing those shiney book style DVD sets. and im just a little older (30. born in '84 the year of our lordmegatronus wrote:I'm 27, so I fall on the younger end of the spectrum for folks who enjoy G1. I grew up on repeats/VHS, and every weekend I would make my parents rent me Transformers: The Movie. That movie, more than anything else, ingrained the legitimacy of G1 in my brain, for reasons that largely mitigate your G1 criticisms. The Movie was (more) serious, and had much less the hokey feel of the TV show.

The year of our lord... Megatronus???
LOL, I didn't see any of season 2 until college, when one of my friends brought his VHS of 5 Faces of Darkness to the dorm.

I like neo designs because they keep the good things about the original designs whilst getting rid of the crap bits. I'm all for homages and design inspirations, but I don't think we should let nostalgia get in the way of progress.
Can easily get Neo-G-1 Dinobots from Hasbro for a fraction of the cost. Like AOE Dinobots, BW Neo Dinobots, TFA Dinobots, Energon Dinobots and BW Dinobots.
If i'm going to spend 3rd party cash of anywhere from $500 to $1000 on G-1 Dinobots toys. Then they've got to look as close to the 1985 Dinobots designs as possible, Like the Fanstoys Dinobots are.

Think you're missing the point if you consider AOE, BW/BW Neo, and TFA Dinobots to be Neo Dinobots. All those other series of Dinobot interpretations are... well... exactly that. Different Dinobots. The purpose of Neo is to give an -updated- version while still resembling the character to which it was based off of. Regardless, it isn't my job to justify what to and not to spend your money on. You should though, at the very least, understand what something is before making such references and comparisons like in your last post.

Loving the looks of Slag and Swoop. Wish they were all getting the chrome treatment but oh well. At this point I'm sold enough that I'm willing to overlook the Sludge size issue. Unless Toyworld's DinoNots manage to win me over (which they very well might given they combine) I'm going FP all the way.

Why do I get the eerie feeling they will release the red swoop
as the regular version and the blue one as an exclusive.
I'm also not to sure about the head, but that won't be the first time
with FP... The more I see, the more doubts I get.
I guess I'll reserve judgement until cubrar is in my hands.

Love swoop, but hate the damn red. I get that they wanted to save the blue for the Diaclone exclusive, but it kills the cartoon accurate aspect that I thought they were shooting for. I might have to buy the expensive blue and chrome swoop and swap out the chrome parts with a red swoop. Im not gonna buy all the chrome versions if Slag is gonna have a blue chest.

I dunno, these look more like FP's take on WFC/FoC Dinos more than the G1 cartoon

I don't think so. For the most part, we have seen a combination of the G1 toys and cartoon in FP designs. The key element is in place: They are all the same height and scale. Sludge has wings. Swoop has a mouth. Slag is a bit different with those annoying dino feet, but not bad by any means. I suspect FP felt forced to make swoop red because of their commitment to make exclusive Diaclone chrome versions for conventions. The Diaclone version was blue. Maybe they will be nice and cater to both groups of fans for the retail version. Fanstoys is giving a choice of colors for their swoop. Six Sigma gave fans a choice whether they wanted cartoon accurate red arms or toy accurate blue arms. Hopefully FP will follow that concept. The Diaclone chrome version will be unique with metallic blue paint. I just want one in flat blue that goes with the general G1 theme of the rest.

I think FP's Swoop has a very feminine look to it.
Not a problem, but it is an interesting take on the character if that is what they were going for.

It's that Coke bottle figure, with the slim waist. Thanks, now I can't not see it.
On the other hand, those types of curves are what I find appealing in other, more manly seeming things, like a late 70s Stingray. I think it works on Swoop. Definitely a "Classics" update to the G1 figure, IMO.

Really not liking that slim waist.. Instead of buying the full set of FP dinos I think I will mix and match bwt mainline stuff and different third parties. This way I'll get the full set much faster than everyone waiting for a full set from one company! =D

When I think of the term "neo" one thing usually comes to mind...what hasbro thinks todays kids can relate to. With that being said, I dont really see how one set of grey and gold dinobots can be more "neo" than the other. Its not like they had to choose to go with a camaro over a VW bug or a tank over a tape deck. For me the only true "neo" dinobots would be the AOE dinobots because they are so off the wall even when redecoed in G1 colors. The difference between FP, Planet X, and Toyworld dinobots is all a matter of aesthetic. To call one robot brontosaurus more neo than the other doesnt really make sense in my opinion. Theyre theyre just different takes on the same G1 character. FP does try harder to recreate the original character though, that I give you.

Re: FansProject Lost Exo Realm - Dinobots !!!
Neo's just another word for "new". Neo G1 is "new G1." Unless it's a reissue that pretty much covered everything. Hell, even some guys like Ehobby Sunstorm or Ehobby SG Blaster, which are recolored G1 toys could rightly be considered Neo G1. Because they're new additions to G1. MPs and classics are all Neo G1 in that they're all new interpretations of the G1 toys.
Ditto most of the Energon Trilogy homages.
I think it's a little better to say things are more "modern". Then you have a better argument. I mean, obviously, guys based off the Fall of Cybertron game would have a more modern look than the toyworld guys. And most Classics releases are more modern than MPs in their look.

I'm a literal person. People toss around the word Neo as if it's doesn't mean new at all. Neo G1 MEANS New G1. That's what it means. They're ALL new G1.
The dinobot sets that aren't Neo G1? The normal releases you find at stores.

I think the fact that the are bony rainbow colored dinobots is what makes the AOE retail versions "neo". Maybe not neo G1, but definitely neo.
People started using the "N" word (lol) when hasbro first came out with the classics line. The original meaning (in my opinion) was to reimagine the G1 characters alt mode into something that is relevant today rather than the 1980s. Im my opinion that was more of a marketing strategy than a vision. Because lets face it, hasbro knew todays kids wont find buggies and boomboxes cool. Some older collectors loved the concept and some thrird parties adopted it, and "neo" was born. I display my collection in robot mode so im not affected by neo alt modes. But I prefer the 80s look with modern engineering and articulation. I love classics scale. Im not interested in the MP line because Im so over season 1 characters and prefer collecting seasons 3 and 4 plus obscure characters. But I agree, the term "neo" should simply mean new. It shouldnt dictate whether a character has been reimagined or gotten an updated alt mode. The fact that it is not a vintage 1980s toy makes it neo in my opinion.
