I have all of those Shockwaves, except for the Alternator, which is next on my list.
Otherwise, I collect Optimus and Rodimus Primes, Grimlocks and Megatrons. I'm considering adding Starscreams.

You don't have a G1 Shockwave. He's really the best of them all next the 3rd party Quakewave. Oddly enough i like the movie Shockwave as well. It's pretty unique looking.
I kinda semi sorta collect Megatron, Grimlock and OPrime. Those are the figures i have the most multiples of across different toylines spanning from G1 to present.
EDIT: Also i'm not sure if i necessarily collect these but i have a thing for G1 Scourge and Gnaw. I'm not sure if it's troop building but for some reason i reeeealy like both those figs and have lots of them. I have all the 3rd party Sharkticons aswell.

Yeah I know, I need to track down a decently priced G1 Shockwave. I'm currently in talks to get an Energon Shockwave

Re: Favourite character to collect?
Bumblebee is the only figure I have more than two of (five versions specifically). It wasn't intentional as Bee isn't a character I like all that much. I wish there were more characters that had multiple molds that I enjoyed since single character displays are a lot of fun to look at. Shockwave is a visually striking character and I love the FOC toy's bot mode. I forgot about the Alternators Shockwave. I may have to pick that up.

Re: Favourite character to collect?
I like collecting Shockwaves too.
Too bad it's hard to get all of any one character. There's always a version a little out of my price range like Shattered Glass Shocky and a lot of the third party versions.
I am thinking about the Eavi Metal: Mugan Amputare. For some reason, a Shockwave that changes into a microscope just makes sense.

I really like collecting Megatron. Although I can totally see the fun in collecting shockwaves. It's very similar to collecting Megatrons because the fact that they were initially guns forces Hasbro and Takara to come up with fun altmodes to sell the character in while keeping his easthetic intact.

Definitely Optimus, I have so many different OP's it's ridic (though I know other people surely have more than me).
I'd also say I get a lot of Mega/Galvatrons and Starscreams, but Jetfire is my favorite, so I try to get him whenever a new one comes (just G1 though, not every last character with the name in other line).

Those are a few new shockwaves to consider that I didn't know about, thanks

So many tanks! haha
There's just something so special about Shockwave to me that gun arm, that one red cycloptic eye, the purple colour scheme, and such cold calculating logic. He's like an evil spock.

Yeah, he's pretty cool. But the big reason behind his very different and otherworldly design is due to the act that he is one of the few G1 transformer toys not to come from Takara. Or Japan, for that matter, he's actually a Korean toy.

I used to collect Optimus (Prime and Primal), Megatrons of all kinds, Scourge/Nemesis Primes, Ultra Magni, Grimlock, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Jazz, Starscream, etc., but now the only collect all of the different Hot Rod/Rodimus and Swindle. I still get other things but I don't get all of them.

Does anyone think it's possible to have every toy of a character. That would include repaints, 3rd party versions, reissues...

I am certain site owner Seibertron has that for a few characters.
It depends the character really. It's pretty easy to have every toy of Crosscut for instance, or even Windblade

Re: Favourite character to collect?
Don't collect characters as such but Prowl, Rodimus and the Seekers have made multiple appearances in my collection.
G1 Prowl is my favourite Transformer. Just wish the writers would read his tech spec where he's logical and infinitely patient rather than a whiny prick.
Though I do like his interpretation in Idw.
I like Checkpoint as I'd imagine it's how Prowl would look as a Prime.

By the sheer amount of them I have, you'd think Optimus Prime, and while I like to collect Primes, I like Grimlock and Ultra Magnus too.

I really enjoy collecting grimlock as well.
This was my collection, but I have gotten the G1 since then and I plan on getting the RID figures too. (I did not include the 2001 RID figure for obvious reasons).

This statement sums me up, as well. (Including the part about being sure others have more than me.)
I know Optimus can be something of a cliché character to be a favorite one to collect... But, well, there is a reason behind that, and the reason is that he is awesome!
Here's my G1 Optimus shelf:

And my G1-ish/G2 Optimus shelf:

Although those are slightly older photos, and I know I've at least added a few more to the above since then. Off the top of my head, I know I have the 2013 Legends Optimus with Roller, and the 2013 Deluxe Orion Pax, neither of which I see in those pics.
(Edit: No, wait... Orion Pax is in there, but curiously, I only see him in the robot mode half of that pic... weird!)
Of course I have Classics Optimus, although he hangs out with my other Arc Crew Autobots rather then on my Optimus shelves, to avoid the obvious omission:

Not currently on display (because of limited space) are the Optimus Primes I have from Robots in Disguise (the 2001 series, not the new one), Armada, Cybertron, or Animated. Or the plethora I have from the first three Bay movies. (My disillusionment with the Bay movies is sufficient that I could not bring myself to even get any Optimus Primes from the fourth one, although I was tempted by the Evasion one, and may someday pick it up.)
Never got any Energon ones... Maybe someday, if I have more display room again and I am breaking out the other ones from the "Unicron Trilogy," I shall endeavor to fill that gap. For now, 'tis not a priority.
Next up in my crosshairs is the Combiner Wars one. Not sure where I will shelve him. Probably on one of my Optimus shelves at first, but if I ever get him a dedicated set of limb-bots, I may have to consider new lodgings for him.

In any event, all Unicron owners who ever display him in planet mode should have something. He looks horrible just lying on his back.

Well, robot mode at least saves the need for a stand then, eh? I don't have Primus, myself. Closest thing I have to another planet Transformer is actually a moon... or rather, "That's no moon." (Darth Vader/Death Star is the only Star Wars Transformer I actively keep on display. Although he hasn't been out of Death Star mode in ages. Maybe I should do something about that.)
But back to your original statement, I never myself display my figures in just one mode. Transformers need to be transformed! It is right in the name, after all. (And half the fun in owning them.) I tend to keep a single shelf all in the same mode, but every once in a while that whole shelf will undergo a change from one mode to another.

I used to keep my Primus and Unicron in Robot mode together but I'm a little limited on space.
That stand you see in the picture is one I pieced together from Orange, Purple and Grey K'nex

This is one of my ways that collecting has morphed. At one point, I bought everything--way back when that was still possible--. Then I morphed into only collecting certain lines. Then it became just certain bots to really focus in on as space available and funds available became less and less.
As things currently stand, I have Thundercracker, Prowl, Springer, Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime collections, and dinobots, and fembots. Still too much. Going to trim it and transform my collecting habits again soon.
Oh and Nemesis versions, black versions of bots, most notably Opitmus.
