Fox broadcasts live suicide?
Fox broadcasts live suicide?
Posted by Scatterlung Thu Nov 06, 2008 10:03 pm
While I'm not sure of the outcome, does anyone else think its a bit sick that Fox just decided to broadcast this?
As far as I know, the man was nobody significant, just an ordinary bloke with some problems, and a news corp rolled in to put his most difficult moments on the internet for all to see.
I didn't stick around to watch. Am I the only one who thinks this is just plain disgusting? I'm sure it makes great watching material for the morbid and hte bored but seriously...

Anyone seen Untraceable (last year's movie)? Without spoiling anything, that's exactly what happened in that movie. And they treated it as a sick move.

In a Galaxy Far Far Awry issue 1: Serial Fiction Sideshow now for sale.
Issue 2: Home Sweet Home Invasion also for sale.
Back issue 3: Technophobia coming soon. And you can help!

It's Fox. Nothing more really needs to be said.

One of their reporters was just recently a guest on "The Daily Show" and was in agreement with Stewart that Hannity and O'Reilly are a bunch of A$$holes.

Since when is professional detachment "disgusting"?
Something newsworthy happens, and they show it. That's their business.

Using a persons death as a means of getting ratings is actually pretty disgusting. This was just some random guy, how is it newsworthy?

Sure it was a sick story to cover, but let's face it, this is America, and the general populace LOVES things like that. That's why we have sites like rotten.com. Ten animated fetuses sing "Prom Night Dumpster Baby" on Family Guy and nobody bats an eye, but one guy eats a bullet and suddenly its offensive?
I'm not saying it was a good story to air, I'm just saying it's not nearly as offensive as most things on television.

Human beings are good at being entertained by tragic events, in general, but do not do so when it is specific.

Yes? Are you denying that the BBC World Service is one of the greatest broadcasting inventions, at times controversial, yet always of the highest standards?

Nope, just amused by the irony I pointed out.

Only if you're a Samurai who just lost a battle, or if your death saves the world or something. Otherwise, it doesn't deserve respect, much less a live feed on Fox News.

That would be lambasting private networks for setting their own moral agenda, and then holding up the BBC as an example of what they should aspire to in [near enough] the same breath.
