A Skylander-like Transformer Game/Figures: Would it Work?

First off, I don't know that much about Skylanders other than they're pretty popular right now. However, I have a friend who is really into them, so I have a basic understanding of it works. You have a portal that plugs into your Wii which you place little figurines in, it reads them and they become playable characters within the game (feel free to correct me on any of that).
Anyway to the point, this seems like it would work well for Transformers. You would have some revamped portal, maybe a Space Bridge, that you would place specially designed Transformers in. It would read them and they would then appear in the game. Activision who does Skylanders already has the Transformers game property. Thoughts?
Posting in the toy forum because I figure many would be more interested in toys than the actual game.

Pretty neat idea, except, I dont want it to be Wii based.
Maybe the characters can have QR codes, and they it can be PC-based, just use your webcam to scan the codes.
Oh, and please don't make every single figure Bumblebee.

It's not. Skylanders is available for Wii, DS, 360, and PS3. The official website says there's also a PC/Mac version, but I've never actually seen that one in stores.

Correction: I don't want it to be Console based. I don't want a Windows program too. I want a web app. Yeah, im running Macintosh, and I don't own a single console.

I think it would be cool, as long as the figures are still fully-functioning, transformable figures. If the base was detachable or there was a scan code somewhere on the figure it could work. Heck, even if they did something like that with Botshots instead of some silly web game it would be pretty awesome.
Great idea using a 'space bridge' as the scanner.

It just seems like it would be a good way to merge a TF video game with a toy line. Would definitely want the figures to actually be transformable.

Takara did try something similar back in the early 2000s. I give you Web Diver.
Gradion. A Robot, a Train, a Video Game.

The review comes courtesy of JoshB of CollectionDX.
You can combine him with other figures as powerups, and they'll appear in the game when you do.
The game also follows Gradion's transformation and displays it on screen. Transform the robot, and the game shows the transformation on screen.

Maybe they can print a QR/Bar code onto the cyberverses?

It would be awesome
But i think they would have to be cyberverse figures.
What genre the game would be?

I would envision something all encompassing, similar to the way Bot Shots are drawing inspiration from multiple eras.
