Optimus Prime [Alternators]
What do you think of this figure? He's available new in my local Argos and I have a £20 gift voucher burning a hole in my pocket!
I read somewhere that you can mod him to look like another transformer but can't remember who it was?
I've not bought any alternators yet and there's Ravage & Wheeljack Altenators also available.

He's really a pain in the ass to transform. If you get him ... notice how his shoulders are seated before going to robot mode.
If you don't get them seated perfectly, the windshield will never line up with the hood. His arms will end up putting a great deal of pressure on the back window bezel, which will lift the windshield away from where it's supposed to sit in truck mode. It's really annoying.
Also, his legs extend about 1/4 inch (6MM) ... but watch out. Drop the panels on the back of his legs (in the truck bed). Then, bend his knees as far as they can go. This will make the extension process much less stressful on the hip joint ... which has been known to break if one is not careful.
Also, his paint apps are non-existant. He's a great figure, but go and check out the Kiss Convoy gallery and compare. Alts prime looks like crap when standing next to him ... especially on his legs.
I'm attaching a digibash pic of some common mods. I did not fabricate the pic, but I've seen the mods on the figure before. They are quite awesome! This is the only pic that I can find at the moment.
Notice the plastic on the upper thigh is trimmed to make his legs more visible. Also, the fenders are rotated forward ... which make the doors more like wings.
The obvious difference is his chest. It looks cool, but I wouldn't do it. Taking pcs. off to transform a figure is quite lame to me. His natural chest configuration is just fine.

Get him.
I did the head swap with a custom Ironhide from Valkfan over at tformers.com. Looks pretty good.
There are lots of alternate transforms for him and minor mods too that make him look a lot better than the original design.
He's not my fav Alt, but I'm glad I have him.

Wheeljack is more of a pain to transform into a car than into a robot (at least for me). Wheeljack looks very good if you do not mind the gun. I do not know about Ravage. Optimus Prime can be a pain to transform.

I found Prime very disappointing compared to other Alts. Ravage is great, haven't got Wheeljack, but I'd get either of those over Prime.

I never once saw an Alternator Prime at any store, Target,Wal-Mart or K-Mart, in my area. If I hadn't picked one up at the Lexington '05 Botcon I likely wouldn't have one.
I'd like to get one to open but that isn't likely to happen.

Prime is pretty good I think, but I only like him in black. I don't have much problem with the mold or transformation like some others mentioned. Though I do get some loose joints on the hip & knees, which gets tricky to fix as you can't really open up his legs easy. Some parts are glued in the assembly, not just with screws like usual.

There are instructions on one of the pages. You'll have to page through all the B/S.
He does transform, but things have to be taken off and re-attached. (Which I hate)
I'd be happy just with the legs and shoulder rotation mod. The bumper is easy enough to remove.
here is the link. You'll have to register to see the pics.

I really think it's the weakest Alternators mold. Skip it, and get MP Prime to go with an Alt collection.

Best to see what you are actually buying to decide whether or not you want him, not what he can look like after modding.
He's not horrible as a figure, but he certainly is not the best Alternator, the Alt mode does not suit Prime as much as it would, say Ironhide or Trailbreaker.
Transformation is simple in comparison to the Vipers and Mustangs.

I bought Alt Prime the first time I ever saw one in stores, I really like him, and he looks great with my other alts, vehicle or robot modes.
