I have been researching this a little and it is getting to the point where actual people that work for these websites now create accounts (this is how they can get past the security of websites now) then post a couple of posts plugging their crap then leave.

A few years back, I can't remember which chat site it was, but it was one where the programmers ran it and designed things to push the limits of their coding abilities.

Anyway, they actually created "chat bots" who had a whole heap of responses coded in to the point you could have a conversation with them.

Albeit it was at times a one sided conversation and they seemed to want to introduce themselves a lot, but when you're living in Australia and the rest of the world seems to be in bed, it was fun to have someone to talk to!

Funny though how that sort of coding tech seems to be lost as it's probably something that could easily be adapted for a spambot.

I remember those, I hung out at a pokemon chat for a few years, they had a meowth bot, where sometimes if you said a specific word meowth would say something.

I remember when I found out how to program it.... lets just say, meowth had a mouth on him.
