Yes, obama won the vast majority of the electorial vote, and that is what counts, but it should be noted that the popular vote came down to less than a 10 million vote difference, which is pretty damn close.

Re: Do you Think America is Ready For a Black President
I really do not think skin color matters. I think some people use it as a weapon to get their way. I know there are people out there who are racist but I think it is much smaller then some in the media make it out to be.
I did not vote for Obama but my reason had nothing to do with skin color. In fact at first I was all for Obama until I did some research and did not like how he voted in the senate. But that aside I sure hope the people who tell the worst of what Obama can do are wrong. With President BushI always hated it when the slighest rumor was thrown all over the airwaves as fact as long as it made him look bad, so I will try my best to never do that with our soon to be president Obama.

Precisely, which is why I'm watching with slight bewilderment at the climate of self-congratulation which seems to have manifested itself in America since the announcement, like all the sins of yesterday have been washed away.
One of the posters in this very thread has even stated that he is 'lying low until all the old people are dead'. How on earth can America possibly be proud when citizens in certain parts of the country cannot celebrate the election of a black man to the presidency out of fear of reprisals? Ludicrous.

It's safe to assume that I'm just taking the piss.

Actually, the contention isn't so much about race, something that makes me proud of my country. What I'm noticing fuels the fears and un-happiness of many Americans about Obama's election is that they see him as the end of democracy and capitolism and the beggining of socialism.
I don't see him in that light, I just see his election as the first step in removing control of our country out of the hands of the rich 1% who currently have the vast majority of our government bought and paid for.
Talking with my cousin (who is in 'tent city' Iraq, preparing to come home in the next week or so), the army is slightly worried because they think he might pull them out of there before the job is done. My mother is afraid of him becuase of religious issues, though now that he is the President-elect, she is throwing her support behind him 100%.
America will always be a heavily divided country. That comes with a little thing we call Freedom. My hope is that Obama is a predident who can breach the division, and help unite us in our differences, not just take a side.

He's Black yada yada yakk--well I don't care race jack!
I voted Obama because I am tired of the Republican Party. I'm not ignoring he's black; indeed there are more than a few "Americans" wishing him harm because of his race. Am praying praying for his safety.

Yeah, that whole, "Obama has the most liberal voting record in the Senate" line. Something that people should remeber is that in their early years, it is a good idea for senators to vote heavily along their party's lines, whether or not they peronally agree with the party's stance on a particular issue. They will never get the support of the party to join various senate commites if they don't. Obama is still in his first Senate term, his record could largly be because he was simply playing the game. Later, when you are more established, you can break away from party lines with fewer consaquenses, ala John McCain.

Very well put. I think it stems from most Americans' general ignorance of these ideas. We've always been a mixed economy anyway, a blend of capitalism and socialism, never fully one or the other.
(**Which, of course, is why the system is so easily manipulated by the corporate barons, politicians, and stock-swindlers.)
I'm afraid of socialism myself, but I just don't see it happening with this guy. Economic Darwinism is one thing, but complete socio-economic idiocy is another bag altogether.
I told the fire to go **** itself, and it did.

Yea, I find it funny too when peole say we are heading for socialism, I mean, didn't we get money sent to us under the Bush presidency? We are a mixed economy, a slight increase in government dependency won't make much of a difference. I've spent many months in canada and it's really not that much different from here.

I do not support Obama personnaly, though not because of his skin. Truthfully I do think America might be ready, and I think it is pretty cool to know that the first black president was elected when I was alive. I just hope he does well, whther he's white, black or anything else. America has come a long way through the years, this is just another way to prove we've matured as a country.
Anyways that's my two cents for today. I'm not even old enough to vote, but I try to stay well-informed.

I honestly think our first black pres. shoud have been Martin Luther King JR., but w'ever. The president's power < Senate's power, and I honestly don't care who the president is as long as it isn't Hillary Clinton.
