do you need to read the past comics before reading the ongoing comics?

I would say no. There are certainly references made to the past series (especially if you are reading the Heart of Darkness mini-series, which is intertwining with Ongoing), but the ongoing series was designed as a starting point for new fans. I say give it a try and then, if you want, check out past issues.
Pi is exactly 3!
