Something I've wondered about for a while is based around a topic of some fiction regarding a future where The United States, Canada, and mexico at some point in the future are merged into one large country. Now many thoughts on this matter have previously been brought up regarding fesability, hazards, and the basic need for a move like this but the main thought that comes to mind is something usually not touched on.
The US is made up of 50 states + Washington DC & it's protectorates (thou for the basics of this I'm only concerned with the 49 NA based states.
Canada has 10 Provinces and 3 Territories
Mexico has 31 federal districts.
What would happen to these entites? Look at the basic states of 6 of these entites Being the smallest and largest by land size.
Tlaxcala 3,997 km
Chihuahua 247,487 km
Rhode Island 4,002 km
Alaska 1,717,854 km
Prince Edward Island 5,660 km
Nunavut 2,093,190 km
The point I'm making is that size wise while all three have a few places with small areas that there are some larger areas that makes up the basis of my thoughts. After all remove Alaska and the largest state is Texas at 695,622 km, smaller than 5 Canadian entities.
Thus in the case of combining the 3 nations into a single one would all these areas become states as is 94 States with 2 special districts, or would a realignment be in order? Either Privinces and Territories are cut down into smaller units? or areas merge existing states into larger mega states to make it easier on school kids to learn states and their capitals?
Thoughts?

Pft,
The way things are going it won't matter.
States rights are becoming more and more of a joke so why bother with individual state identity. If MexAmeriCanada comes about you might as well split up the states by timezone.
As for kids learning states... they don't do that now
