With the arrival of my new computer system in about a week I plan to start writing my book but I also wanted to get an internet site going too or at least have the domain name registered to me and develop the site later.
Unfortunately the exact name I wanted was already taken but this site http://www.register.com/ offered similar names or existing site names but were basically for sale.
The name I'm looking for MUST have either the words "productions" or "studio" after my keyword such as SomethingProductions.com or SomethingStudios.com just for example only however.
My point is that the existing name that is already taken is considered a premium site name designed to catch peoples attention and easy to remember and I have to agree...they are wanting $1,588.00 for the existing name is this a reasonable price ?
Unless I think of some other name then this one is pretty much perfect.
Internet domain names ?

Well the first thought would be other spellings of your original name, maybe add some hyphens, however there's the possibility that it could lead to nasty lawsuits down the line.
Also the idea of buying a domain name, simply for the purpose of selling it off again at a much higher price makes me sick, but such is the nature of Internet business; everyone's out for a profit no matter what.
As for coming up with new names, I like the idea of PrimaStudios, but I'm probably letting my own interests cloud my thought processes

I'd certainly like to avoid lawsuits just like anyone would...I certainly would not re-sell the site name myself but it did not seem too unreasonable I just wanted opinions of course before I plop any amount of money down.
Specifically it has the word Firefly in it which is part of a childhood memory and part of my book and what I wanted to base the internet name on but I'll give it further thought...thanks Mkall!

At the end of the day you need to ask yourself if you're certain you'll be able to make more than $1,588.00 from your book, and subsequent products. I don't know what you financial status is; to you 1500 bucks bay be a drop in an ocean in which case how bout lending your buddy Mkall some?
In seriousness take a hard look at whatever book(s) you're planning to write and think seriously if you have the commitment to see it through. I've made many efforts to get a grand scheme going only to realise down the road that I'm not as interested in it as I thought I was, and as such I have several partial-done projects to my name, with nothing to show from them but wasted time and effort.
If you believe that your book will be profitable, and you're certain that you can complete it, then go for it.

At a reasonable return interest rate of 500% sure.

Well, it's not a lot of money to me no I just am new to the internet site business and wanted to ask questions before to be thorough...I just spent a little under 3,000.00 on a new computer system and 10-15 thousand over the last four years on my transformer collection alone.
I've always had the writing "bug" but never dedicated all my time free or otherwise to it but I did write a Star Trek Voyager script but it was in the last six months of the show and the response I received was something to the effect of "Thank you for your interest in writing for the show however since the show is in it's final months we are not accepting any speculative scripts at this time and wish to maintain the creative control over the show leading up until it's finale."
I've written other things too never published them but I want to now.
At the end of the day I suppose $1,588.00 is not a massive financial loss all things considered, not enough to put me in to bankruptcy but even with modest advertising on the site it would help pay for some of it or more in the long run.
The things in my head must be written as I cannot draw to visualize them so they must be visualized in words if that makes sense.

makes perfect sense, after all that's how Doctor Jekyll and MR Hyde was made.
Then I would say go for it!
