this is just an idea or something that i've always thought even when i was a kid

i thought that transformers did more just than transform when they converted. i think that they transform as well as reconfigure, certain parts get shorter or longer when changing, i think that certain parts of the transformer reconfigure to accomidate their robot or vehicle form

That is a fact. It's called mass shifting, where a transformer's mass will compact or be sent into a pocket dimension. G1 Megatron, Soundwave, and Reflector are excellent examples of this.
